... I.e. after BJ announcement to stop non essential travel and contact?

For me, traffic was the same, attitudes are not changing. Eg my colleague “but it’s ok to take my mum shopping to a busy shopping centre this weekend isn’t it?”

Are the over 70s (IMHO shlould be over 60s) being more careful?

I don’t feel like people are taking this seriously, yet in today’s briefing, BJ obviously assumes it’s going to reduce cases.

Sparkly BJ said that the over 70s should especially follow the non essential travel/ contact rule - that’s what I am referring to

DC swimming lessons have also been cancelled.

OneOfTheGrundys · 17/03/2020 18:09

In our very little hamlet of about 6 houses we are all home for various reasons. Shops and roads quiet.

MrsBobDylan · 17/03/2020 18:12

Very different here - I went out to pick up ds medication and Tesco shelves were bare. Car park busy and tonnes of poorly looking elderly people refusing to take sensible precautions and stay home.

Everyone over 7O should self isolate because when the enormous peak of cases happens, they will be very low down the list for ventilators. Sad and horrible but true if we listen to what's happened in Italy and Spain.

soloula · 17/03/2020 18:14

Lots of local closures on Facebook - leisure facilities, small gigs, social events (baby showers, birthday parties). School and nursery are much quieter too.

Arrowfanatic · 17/03/2020 18:16

Roads have been quiet but the supermarket was still busy even with all its empty shelves.

Our local pub usually has quite a few people in it over the late afternoon but today as I walked past on the school run it was just full of the over 70s.

rslsys · 17/03/2020 18:18

Checking some of the older residents in our village today (via phone & e-mail). Most said they had enough food in to see them through 7-10 days if necessary. The goalposts got moved yesterday when we were told we needed to self isolate (if necessary) for 14 days. Cue older residents going out to top up supplies to last for 14+ days . . .

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 17/03/2020 18:19

I saw an old man pulling a huge wheeled cart/wagon behind him full of shopping. It took up the whole pavement.

Staff were disinfecting shopping trolleys and baskets. The shelves were empty. People were helping strangers by giving advice on which shops to try next for bread, milk, toilet paper and flu medicines.

The coughing, homeless man was led away by two policemen. Normally he's just ignored.

rumandbiscuits · 17/03/2020 18:20

I noticed a lot of elderly people out today. I would say it was quieter than usual though and everyone seemed so sad. It was really depressing, I felt like bursting into tears in the middle of the shop.

LuluJakey1 · 17/03/2020 18:20

Streets, shops and cafes in our village very quiet but pubs looked the same as usual.

GeraltOfRivia · 17/03/2020 18:21

On my dog walk everyone nodded and smiled from a distance. No stopping to chat. Although, when I drive past the local cafe it was heaving so not everyone cares so much!

ScribblingMilly · 17/03/2020 18:22

I live on a street of restaurants. About half were closed last night and the others empty or almost empty.

cologne4711 · 17/03/2020 18:23

I have been seeing very bad driving. It's almost like people are thinking "the police have got bigger things to do". For example, driving along a pavement for ages, when there were pedestrians on it up ahead!

And driving much faster than is acceptable in a town centre.

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/03/2020 18:23

Marks and Spencers was really quiet. Didn't have to queue.
Drive back through Cheshire Oaks outlet village which is usually packed. A far few cars and a few people about but nowhere near as many as usual

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/03/2020 18:24

Drove and fair 😫

WhoWants2Know · 17/03/2020 18:24

People were staying much further apart when I went to the supermarket today

Potplant · 17/03/2020 18:24

I’ve been WFH so not my usual day.

I went to GPs to pick up a prescription and they wouldn’t let me in. They had someone sitting at a desk outside!
The chemist had a barrier in front of the desk so you couldn’t get too close and was only allowing two people in at a time.

I nipped into Aldi on my way back and that was as normal.

RainbowsandSnowdrops · 17/03/2020 18:24

Not at all.

I work in a bank. I’ve had loads of older people come in for non essential things. I feel very uneasy about it to be honest.

Latenightreader · 17/03/2020 18:27

Lots of my volunteers have been contacting us to say they won't be coming in (heritage attraction) but company policy is currently to be open. I am stuck at home due to a cold (policy says seven days at the moment) so I feel terrible asking people if they are considering coming in.

Useryokyesno · 17/03/2020 18:28

I try to go to independent shops/bars/restaurants so I follow a lot in social media loads are posting about being closed. I live very close to a shopping centre, car park was fairly empty. I work in the cultural sector, loads of museums and galleries I follow on sm are closing as well as the cinema I'm a member of and theatres I go to lots. So there is going to be a change in behaviour. Might just take a while to get to people.

But there's a barbers very close to my house. This was busy as always!

happysunr1se · 17/03/2020 18:28

Our local roads were quieter, but when I had to commute to my job nothing was really different.
infact I would say the roads were busier (Kensington and Chelsea).

I work in a shop opposite a park and there were more than usual people jogging, dog walking, strolling around with baby in pram, kids on scooters.

Travelling back home through clapham junction they still had the evening standard people handing out papers, lots of people with suitcases, a woman who had obviously gone fashion clothes shopping with 5 new high street brand bags.

I had an average number of customers in my shop. We are asking them to only come in one at a time.
I have dual feelings about this as it means we can still take business, trying to keep afloat for as long as possible, but on the other hand we sell bespoke decorative items so people's priorities seem a bit weird to still be visiting us and placing orders after all that has been said yesterday.

EvilPea · 17/03/2020 18:29

Yes to the speeding.
Our roads are really quiet and the speeding is noticeable.
Quiet schools, quiet roads. All the hand car washes have shut.

Manic supermarkets, banks and pubs really busy.

Snowy111 · 17/03/2020 18:31

My attitude to speeding would be - you really don’t want to find yourself in need of prolonged hospital treatment right now Hmm

ChequerBoard · 17/03/2020 18:32

We are self-isolating so very different for us. Lots of events and activities being cancelled.

Except bizarrely, the choir and music school run by the local council who seem to thing it's fine to carry on as normal!

Bunnylady54 · 17/03/2020 18:34

It’s certainly very highly recommended that over 70s self isolate but there seemed to be an awful lot of people in that age bracket at my store today Confused
I’m in Cornwall & we seem to be getting off fairly lightly at the moment, although things are being cancelled & places closed. Just waiting to see if DD’s school closes. If it does I would have to take time off work as my parents provide most of DD’s childcare & as they are in their early 80s, they are self isolating.
