Give the government a chance ffs. This is bringing out the selfishness in everyone!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2020 08:30

I give in!

Why believe the Tabs and their paper selling headlines? They're no more honest and reliable than any politiician and yet... politicians HAVE to do something to help people, it's their absolute remit. Newspapers never ever have to take on that responsibility!

WaterIsWide · 18/03/2020 08:34

.

IndieTara · 18/03/2020 08:41

The link I posted to The Mirror headlines is just them Reporting on what The Chancellor actually said last night.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2020 08:48

And the very first line spins what he said into a fear and rage inducing line

The government faces anger after leaving renters and zero-hour workers out of a £350bn coronavirus crisis package

a) That isn't what was done. That package was specifically for businesses, nobody was 'left out' of a package that was not intended for them!
b) the package for individuals hasn't been announced and when it is guess what, all businesses will be 'left out' of it!

Don't fall for it! Wait and see what is actually said and listen to it yourself rather than read what any media outlet twists it into! Then you can get angry about things that actaully are

IndieTara · 18/03/2020 09:00

@curious my post was only intended to show that The Chancellor, on tv, after the press release last night did say that help for renters would be advised in the next few days.
I watched him say in a televised broadcast.

It wasn't any kind of comment on the way newspapers or the media report, twist or sensationalise. That is a different topic entirely.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2020 09:02

Ah! I read that in the same vein as the "WTF are they doing for us little people?" posts! Sorry Smile Blush

IndieTara · 18/03/2020 09:11

@curious no worries!

Hsyfle · 18/03/2020 09:40

Daily reader of MN but I just register so I can tell you what kind of landlord I have and I'm more that sure that are more people in my situation now.

Just got the letter on my post that starting with next month my rent will go up with £50 a month.
Our contract will expire at the end of the month and they suddenly decide to increase it.
They are aware that we can not apply for any benefits due to our income and our saving.
We were planning to buy a house in the next months and we inform them 2 months ago and our mortgage in principle is already approved.
They are paying £600 mortgage and we used to pay £1400, now they want more...

My husband is self-employed so probably soon without a job and I'm on the amazing list of 12 weeks self isolation.

Now I'm thinking that I have 10 days to empty their house after 5 years and move to my brother house or to spend all our extra saving to pay their increase rent and probably postpone for who knows when to buy the house.

They don't answer to e-mail and phones, they never done it. And after so many years they are asking for my back details (it looks like they don't know them) to finally returned my deposit because I had 2 months deposit - reason for asking more I have a child.

So I know that are existing amazing landlords but unfortunately mine is not.

Difficult situation but probably I will move and wish them good-luck and I'm more that sure they will complain to everybody about us and try to keep out deposit but what other option I have ?

Because of this kind of landlords, we the renters, the working and tax paying ones, need help from gov.

Sorry for the long message but maybe my landlord is reading this message or others like them and realize that is not normal what they are doing.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2020 09:47

Just got the letter on my post that starting with next month my rent will go up with £50 a month. Our contract will expire at the end of the month and they suddenly decide to increase it. That is pretty normal practice. Your ability to claim benefits is not their responsibilty, nor your employment status.

Now I'm thinking that I have 10 days to empty their house after 5 years Why? Did they give you notice? Have you given notice? You don't have to leave at the end of the contract, it can roll on. And you can wait and see what the government says about renters and landlords and then go back wth a counter offer.

When did they return the excess deposit they held? Was it held in a deposit scheme?

After 5 years there won't be much they can as to retain from your depost. Just definite damage! There would be little point in them asking for much towards redecoration after 5 years. You'd be supported at arbitration if you objected!

I'm an inventory clerk, I do check outs for a living! Please don't panic and move out next week. It isn't necessary!

IndieTara · 18/03/2020 10:09

My landlord puts my rent up every April too. Cant imagine this year will be any different

Hsyfle · 18/03/2020 10:12

I'm not panicking I'm evaluate my situation, to be honest.

They did not give any notice, spoke with them a 2 months ago when we inform them about the fact that we will soon move and give them the option to roll on the contract until we will buy the house or we can move out if they want to find new tenants.
They were verbally agree for us to remain in the house and they were saying that they will post the new contract with everything mention.
But then, surprise rent increase.

They did not return the deposit yet, they are asking in the letter for our bank details to return it, the deposit was held in a deposit sheme.

Lucky me, I know exactly my rights and this is mainly thanks to MN but post it for everybody to understand that unfortunately it will always be people that will try to take advantage of a crisis situation.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 18/03/2020 10:25

I am both a renter and a landlord (moved area). Had absolute radio silence from my landlord (not a surprise, they can't be bothered to fix the leaking toilet either.. luckily we have a second toilet so that one is just unused).

On the other hand, my rental agent emailed to point out that the rental insurance is still open if we wanted it, but upon querying it turned out that if the tenant goes 30 days in arrears then it all is taken out of our hands and the insurers legal department takes over. I'm not up for that. I don't think insurers will make sound moral decisions, so we'll just take the hit if our tenant defaults, and hope that it's not for too long.

IamMoana · 18/03/2020 13:18

I know of at least 1 lender which has suspended all evictions in the pipeline. Also 3 month payment holidays are not a simple thing, there are implications which need to be explained to the customer and the amount will need to be repaid as your mortgage balance will be increasing along with the interest.

You will find a lot of lenders are being deluged with calls asking for this break, and are on the back foot hurriedly trying to get a process & solution in place. With minimal staff as many are self islolating for 14 days now. These people are also in fear or losing their jobs and paying their own mortgage/rent along with the health implications of sitting in an office full of hundreds of potentially infected people.

Coronavirus: Renters to be protected from eviction, PM says www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51939634

Mortgage holders getting 3 months amnesty, what about RENTERS?
IndieTara · 18/03/2020 13:51

@dgrosetti completely agree

prh47bridge · 18/03/2020 13:56

Renters to get feck all

Wrong. Renters to be protected from eviction. Would have been better if this had been announced at the same time as the other measures but yesterday was primarily about what the Treasury is doing and this is not a Treasury matter.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 18/03/2020 14:00

I'm not sure what you really expected the government to do??? This is unprecedented.
What If someone rents out their house and it isn't mortgaged to be able to pass on a mortgage holiday so the rent is their only source of income?

I've always wondered why more people don't take out employment protection insurance in the event of redundancy - it's £40 a month - but people don't like to plan for worst case scenarios

DGRossetti · 18/03/2020 14:02

Renters to be protected from eviction.

I'll believe it when it's on a government department website, not the BBCs Boris page. It wouldn't be the first time a big announcement is made that shuts people up, and the details are less than whelming.

If for no other reason that I'm guessing the legislation needs to ensure landlords can get rid of tenants for reasons other than non-payment of rent. Otherwise the government would be letting them down. Which isn't what they are there for.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2020 14:03

Bloody hell! Here does it all com from?

I was listening to the radio and Corbyn is all over this... Oooer Mr Johnson you forgot the normal people!

Such shit is what is promoting a class divide! The incumbent government said yesterday, and repeated today, that they will be making a statement on self employed, schools, renters, individuals etc etc.... WILL BE....

Why, at a time of public panic, is ANYONE fanning the flames of panic? Even more reason to be glad I sent back my Labour membership card! Now is not the time for point scoring. Now is the time for an informal coalition...

DGRossetti · 18/03/2020 14:03

I'm not sure what you really expected the government to do???

Govern ?

sadmumbecauseofson · 18/03/2020 14:04

I'm a landlord, if I get a three month mortgage break then my tenants will have a three month rent break.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2020 14:07

Govern ?

So what, that you absolutely know they are not doing, should they be doing? Not 'things they are doing you disagree with' but things you are 100% certain they are not and will not address?

All I can see is that they are not doing things in an order that some people would like... which would have been the same cry whatecer order they made statements.

All I heard yesterday was how many emergency meetings had taken place in order for the treasury to make the statements it did... and I will assume there are lots more we have not heard of.

Too many people have become overly comfortable with the instant fix of social media and have forgoteen - shit happens in real time!

DGRossetti · 18/03/2020 14:09

Such shit is what is promoting a class divide!

Yes - not creating it though ....

The incumbent government said yesterday, and repeated today, that they will be making a statement on self employed, schools, renters, individuals etc etc.... WILL BE....

so ? Incumbent governments lie all the time. I wouldn't blame anyone for taking things with a pinch of salt. If you don't want a country where people don't trust the government, don't have untrustworthy governments.

Why, at a time of public panic, is ANYONE fanning the flames of panic? Even more reason to be glad I sent back my Labour membership card! Now is not the time for point scoring. Now is the time for an informal coalition...

I think asking questions -and wanting answers- can't really count as "fanning the flames of panic". And in any case, I would hope than an "informal coalition" wasn't a synonym for follow-the-leader.

Now - more than ever - our leaders need to be held to account for the decisions they take. And if they don't like it then - bluntly - they can fuck off and let people who can and will take the decisions necessary.

Or is government going to turn out to be like insurance, and we happily pay for it year on year, right up until we need to claim on it and suddenly find "you government doesn't cover you for that ...." ?
