Just had an email from DD large secondary school in northwest saying they will be shut from tomorrow until the Easter break - and to wait for further updates on whether they will open after Easter.

I'm presuming this is nationwide

I've had an email from DD2's school to say that they are only opening for years 7, 10 and 11 tomorrow and Thursday. They also recommend isolating if the child has a learning disability. I've then phoned DD1's SS and they've said 'nope, unless the government shuts us down, we're open.'

MigGril · 17/03/2020 13:43

I have hurd some schools have said they are closing, but have been asked to remain open by the government.

Some will have to close due to staff shortages it's going to happen.

leafygarden · 17/03/2020 13:46

Right - so I have re-read the email more carefully and it says they are shutting due to knew isolation rules and I guess several staff must be off.

They are putting together online teaching materials for pupils to use from the beginning of next week.

S H are the initials of the large secondary school near me which has just closed until April 14th due to staff shortages caused by Covid 19. My son goes to a private school nearby and we’ve been told they have to keep coming in to school. I do feel it is only a matter of time before they will all close though.

Some schools here are partially closed due to having staff off sick, but they are prioritising Year 11

Wilkolampshade · 17/03/2020 13:49

Ours, boarding, North-West, closed till after Easter hols, then to be reviewed.

SistemaAddict · 17/03/2020 13:50

Also in the north west and dds secondary is remaining open. The HT is communicating frequently with us though and I think closure will happen soon. Year 8 are low down on their priority list for keeping in school. We are self isolating anyway. Fuck all from the primary school.

cjt110 · 17/03/2020 13:52

Our school is open as normal I believe... However, I am suspicious that they are sending home the mothers day gifts tonight rather than Friday. Payment for the items was due to be in by Thurs and they are sending them home saying you would still need to settle any balance...

smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 13:52

dh`s secondary is partial closing from tomorrow. not enough staff.

GaraMedouar · 17/03/2020 13:53

We’re down in the South East - not shutting at the mo - but they’ve cancelled after school clubs, trips, assemblies etc- no parents allowed in, children having to wash hands etc. I think it’ll depend how many teachers self isolate .

Itsallgonewoowoo · 17/03/2020 13:55

Email from our school last night (after BoJo) says no planned closure yet. They have however cancelled all sports matches with other schools and postponed the school play but so far term dates are unchanged.

AntibacHero · 17/03/2020 13:55

My dc school has just announced partial closure due to staff shortages, effective from tomorrow.
They're still going to be teaching year 7 & 11.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/03/2020 13:55

Central London senior school - we are closer from NOW

1980sQueen · 17/03/2020 13:57

Ah how I wish this was the case with all schools.

For anyone who has a child with pre existing health conditions (I'm assuming this applies to all schools given the current situation) you can take your child and all siblings out of school until further notice.
They won't take any action re the absences.

I've made the decision (much as I hoped I didn't have to as I really hoped all schools would just close) to take all 3 of mine out until at least after the Easter holidays (obviously I will keep reviewing the situation).
My youngest has underlying health issues including respiratory problems (he's been in intensive care previously) due to the disability he has.
All 3 schools have been really understanding (high school, primary and special school) and assured me it will be authorised and no action will be taken in this current situation.

Just thought I'd put that out there if it helps anyone.

TwelveIslands · 17/03/2020 13:58

There are two secondaries in my area closed now. I'm not saying which or giving initials. I expect more will follow as it becomes increasingly impossible to keep them open.

1980sQueen · 17/03/2020 13:59

Forgot to add the schools are sending work home for them.

JemimaPuddleCat · 17/03/2020 14:01

Email from our high school saying they understand parents keeping kids off even if its just out of worry. They are preparing work to be available online for those who are not attending.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/03/2020 14:04

Lessons are online via Teams apparently. We use this for work (I hate it),

PlugholePencil · 17/03/2020 14:07

Ours is staying open until the government says they have to close, regardless of whether there are any confirmed cases within the school.

smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 14:08

dh school (I commented earlier is going to partial closed) means he still has to go in, to set work for kids off and for the few kids still attending.

TackyTriceratops · 17/03/2020 14:09

We are open tomorrow

ExchangedCat · 17/03/2020 14:10

Our kids primary closed last night - not enough staff to maintain the ratios. The staff were brilliant and have provided learning packs for the kids

justasking111 · 17/03/2020 14:12

Frankly what the schools should be doing which many parents are is saying, if you are a SAHM keep your kids off allowing a reduced staff to look after those whose parents are in the front line, nursing, supermarkets etc.

listsandbudgets · 17/03/2020 14:13

We've not had anything about closure yet though we've received email from both DD and DS's school about how teaching will contiue online

DD (14) is going to be deeply unimpressed when she discovers that she's got online registration at 8.40am and except for practical lessons and PE will have a full timetable with some lessons being done via video link.

DS (7) will apparently have a full timetable and be expected to submit work online. He does not have a laptop, we'll have to consider what to do as I need mine for work and mumsnetting

This is going to be very hard on families without internet connections or no decent computers :(
