People heading to rural/holiday area

Do you think there will be a surge of this?
I noticed all the prices on self catering cottages has just shot up in some touristy places.

I’m in Lake District, national park.

I often stay with my partner in Lancaster and wondering if to pack and go Isolate with him for a few weeks. only a short train journey but not at all sure this is wise

Will people turn up here in droves do you think?

Scruffyoak · 17/03/2020 13:14

I hope not. I'm in a rural country town

Musicforsmorks · 17/03/2020 13:16

I’ve heard people want to leave cities, and the Cumbrian tourist board are ACTIVELY encouraging people to come up, saying it is healthier here!

Wtf?

Irresponsible, but I guess they’re grasping for profit in this chaos...

So now some rural are scared and want to piss off to urban areas.
The irony!

A train will be a petri dish. And what is the healthcare system like there (although it's shit in London so whatever)?

longearedbat · 17/03/2020 13:19

I'm in a very rural holiday cottage area. We don't want extra possible virus carriers here thank you. Keep your ills to yourself, at your home. We have no panic here and I would like it to stay that way. I say no panic, because the local shops have plenty of everything except eggs (which you can get at the farm gate anyway) so things are remaining civilised.

RoobyMyrtle · 17/03/2020 13:20

My family live in a fairly rural area. They have a case in the village. Don't assume it's any safer. Just stay put.

Musicforsmorks · 17/03/2020 13:21

Do re-read.

I already live in The fucking rural holiday town.

Im concerned about the tourist board encouraging people to come to the Lake District ‘because you are less likely to get coved-19 here’

This is so dammed irresponsible of them I’m lost for words.

These art tiny towns, 2000 - 6000 residents, tiny health Centers. Hospitals quite a distance off.

If it's anything like Italy and Spain, yes.
That's how it is spreading to less populated areas.
The day before Lombardia was put into total lockdown, the trains were rammed. Not to mention the buses, planes and motorways.
Infection rates in the south (estimates say 150,000 fled the north before lockdown) is now rising daily.

Musicforsmorks · 17/03/2020 13:22

Sorry, my impatience was aimed at the poster who told me not to go rural.

I already am rural.

OP posts:
severalboxes · 17/03/2020 13:22

You're much more likely to get a hospital bed if you need it in a city, I should think

TheCanterburyWhales · 17/03/2020 13:23

There was already a thread (prob more) yesterday with some fuckmuppet saying she was heading off from the city to her holiday home in Cornwall.

Musicforsmorks · 17/03/2020 13:25

Im in Ambleside, nr troutbeck.

2 tiny shops/grocers and one small health center.

All surrounding self catering has shot up in price so I assume they’re anticipating (and encouraging) a massive spike in visitors.

Have I gone insane or has Cumbrian tourism lost the effing plot?

OP posts:
Musicforsmorks · 17/03/2020 13:26

I’m more disturbed that the tourist industry is telling people to leave cities and come to the lakes, to avoid covid.

OP posts:
Tonyaster · 17/03/2020 13:27

I live in a very rural place. People have started driving here, parking in the lane outside my house and walking their dogs in the fields opposite. Time to move the bull in.

ClashCityRocker · 17/03/2020 13:41

I must admit I'm surprised at how many holiday cottage companies are using it as a selling point re Covid-19...🙄

Musicforsmorks · 17/03/2020 13:42

This is a quote from the tourism Website:

*Coronavirus advice for visitors

In a region famous for fresh air tourism, the Lake District is one of the safest areas to visit for holidays during the current COVID-19 coronavirsus outbreak.

If you have family members in high risk groups (such as elderly and/or with underlying health issues) and are anxious about coronavirus during your holidays, you could book self catering accommodation to minimise social situations. Otherwise, there is no greater risk on holiday in Cumbria than at home, possibly less.*

People are already doing it.

We've had coaches turning up and stupid hotels/b&b/airb&b advertising themselves as a lovely place to isolate. People on here have been doing it as well.

We've one GP surgery. And hospital care is mostly in another county, hours away. You get ill here you are fucked. Ambulances take hours without this added pressure. The governments "you're never an hour away from an A&E is bulkshit - and some in rural areas are more akin to minor injuries sending people elsewhere. We are one of the worst places to live if you get ill in the uk. The mortality rate for cancer is horrendous because you must wait so long due to no local treatment only diagnosis - can be twelve months for treatment.

I've been blocked by various companies on social media for telling them to stop doing this. Tourism will suffer and especially in Wales/Scotland/ireland where there's no emergency fund to help (it's England only) but the answer is to contact our respective governments and demand a fund, not put people at risk.

Musicforsmorks · 17/03/2020 13:43

Local self catering has gone up by around £100 in past 2 days.

OP posts:
Becca19962014 · 17/03/2020 13:43

Oh yeah I've seen it by tourist boards elsewhere too.
I'd write it out but I've been blocked.
For trolling.
Hmm

Musicforsmorks · 17/03/2020 13:46

And their info is absolute bollocks too. Truly misleading.

In south lakes there are 9 cases, something like 16 overall in Cumbria.

In my partner’s urban industrial town there are a grand total of 2.

So they can fuck off with their bullshit.

Smithesque · 17/03/2020 13:46

I'm in a rural area in Ireland. I've had non stop cancellations for my holiday let but the holiday home owners have turned up an masse at the weekend. Thing is the pubs and restaurants are shut and there's space aplenty for everyone to get out if they need to and not bump into anyone else. We are over an hour from the nearest hospital so they'll find that bit fun if it becomes necessary.

SirVixofVixHall · 17/03/2020 13:46

Same problem here, wales. Wales has the added issue of the lowest number of beds pp and the oldest population. We also have an hour’s drive to a hospital. Can kill people, this behaviour. Really shameful.

TeaMilkNoSugarThanks · 17/03/2020 13:47

Oh God. Really?! Like the combination of over-stretched hospitals, an elderly retired population and terrible road links and a nuclear power station and unprepared fell walkers needs any more stress.

I was in the WCH ITU with my DF a few weeks ago. The staff are angels. But they're not miracle workers.

Sooverthemill · 17/03/2020 13:49

I'm in a tourist place and it does seem that we have a lot of people in town with children, even on weekdays. We have 60% non permanent residents so gussying second homers and renters have come. We do have clean air. But one overstretched GP surgery and 1 hour of the nearest hospital and most of the 40% are elderly trying to self isolate

SirVixofVixHall · 17/03/2020 13:49

I agree with becca , trying to get an ambulance here in an emergency is a real worry at the best of times. Crazy to leave a city for this.

Gazelda · 17/03/2020 13:51

This is really interesting. I hadn't seen the promotion of rural areas.
I booked a self catering break to Yorkshire over Easter. Booked months ago, final payment paid in Jan.
We've been debating whether to go, and have decided to see how things are nearer the time.
But it's interesting that the property owner hasn't cancelled our booking as presumably they'd then have to refund us our (considerable) payment.
If I go on b my break, please don't treat me as an unwanted intruder. You'd be welcome in my part of the world, I hope I'm not made to feel unwelcome in Yorkshire.
