Children die???

hoolydooly · 17/03/2020 00:48

The WHO apparently said today that children have died of coronavirus (according to a BBC summary of the WHO press conference).

Until now, it's been said that there has been only one child death, sad though that obviously is, in the 10-19 years old range. Zero deaths in the 0-9 range.

So where did this statement come from? I have seen no figures to back it up - the figures from China, and Italy contradict it completely.

Where did this statement come from?
Has it been misquoted, in fact?
If it's true, what is actually going on?

The people versus work.

I'm exactly the sane, dd has her usual seasonal cough, which has a wheeze and can turn nasty. We've ended up in hospital before.
I'm so worried about any of us needing hospital for anything.

Ventilatorshortage · 17/03/2020 07:10

The risk with anything respitory is they will put us with covid victims

Cam77 · 17/03/2020 07:20

British schools must stay open so more families can catch the virus better. The big numbers will go down if you just stop testing. Stop going down the boozer unless you really want a pint. Them foreigners no nothing. (courtesy of gov.uk)
note; saracasm, disregard.

Il share someone's post who's had it

Children die???
Children die???
puds11 · 17/03/2020 07:30

@Anonymous9826279 can you verify that source? Otherwise it’s pretty irresponsible to share it.

Quartz2208 · 17/03/2020 07:32

I’m glad they have further data on it I found it a very political move designed to scare into doing what the WHO want

alloutoffucks · 17/03/2020 07:33

Our government should have said weeks ago that children already very vulnerable to illness, should be isolated.
I don't think children with ordinary health levels will be an issue. But there are children who are already vulnerable to illnesses that seem to be at risk.
Last night was also the first time pregnant women were mentioned. Again we should have been told weeks ago. No one wants to take risks when they are pregnant.

Quartz2208 · 17/03/2020 07:34

Anonymous that said her child has a febrile seizure now they are awful and scary but not just Covid related

KahlanRahl · 17/03/2020 07:40

In my country there are previously healthy teens in the ICU with covid. If they are sick enough for ICU, some can get sick enough to die.

alloutoffucks · 17/03/2020 07:46

Children will be prioritised for ICU.
I hadn't known that it had been the Chinese school holidays, so kids already were not at school.

CappyCapCap · 17/03/2020 07:49

I am sure the posts that anonymous posted turned out to not be covid. Again, people working in the assumption it is.

Febrile seizures can happen with a fever from anything.

In my country there are previously healthy teens in the ICU with covid. If they are sick enough for ICU, some can get sick enough to die.

Teenagers have never been a group with zero death rate.

Sweetpea84 · 17/03/2020 07:49

Sometimes I despair at China take some responsibility.

alloutoffucks · 17/03/2020 07:52

@sweetpea I think we have to be really careful in the current atmosphere. Chinese students in the UK have already been attacked.

R2221 · 17/03/2020 07:52

There are a lot of children with underlying conditions. Still zero deaths. Although it sounds good, totally unbelievable. Also all those shitty statistics are from under reporting. They aren’t even testing a lot of people with symptoms!

Foobydoo · 17/03/2020 07:58

It is pretty clear they said 'Children HAVE died' meaning from covid19, not might die if health systems struggle.
It was obviously a direct comment to hint our government is very wrong with the 'children are hardly effected stance that people have understandably latched onto as they wont manage if children are off school for a length of time.
A solution could be to implement some form of universal income now, it was due to be tried in some area and may be a way to stop everything crashing. Other countries are temporarily paying people who cannot work due to this, along with pausing rent and utility payments.

KahlanRahl · 17/03/2020 08:02

Well they also say that children don't get as sick. I class a 13 yo as a child, and I'm not the only one.

Oakmaiden · 17/03/2020 08:02

@alloutoffucks

I think we have to be really careful in the current atmosphere. Chinese students in the UK have already been attacked.

I also think that, whilst obviously the Chinese people hold no blame for what has happened, their Government has not acted in a way that is beyond reproach.

However, in China in particular, you can't blame the population for the actions of their government.

alloutoffucks · 17/03/2020 08:03

This makes me feel guilty. I reassured a worried mum who has a child with the same serious health condition I have, that if her young child caught it, he would be fine. Instead she should have been keeping him at home.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 17/03/2020 08:11

It's almost like there's so much secrecy to prevent mass hysteria 😳

alloutoffucks · 17/03/2020 08:16

I think saying healthy children only get mild symptoms are fine. I think it is bordering on criminal to let all parents with kids with more serious conditions assume they will be fine.

everythingcrossed · 17/03/2020 08:17

In Italy, the Ministry of Health released figures at the weekend that stated only two people under 40 had died, both 39 and both with underlying health conditions. CV19 does not seem to affect children - although they can still catch it - in the same way as it does older people. Article here. It is horrific that anyone is dying but, currently, there is not a huge danger to children.

CappyCapCap · 17/03/2020 08:22

Well they also say that children don't get as sick. I class a 13 yo as a child, and I'm not the only one.

That's stats have always supported this, only in young children. I am not saying its individuals faults for not knowing a 13 year old isnt in the same category as an under 9.

This is the problem. The fucking governments and their vague statements, hoping everyone investigates everything they say to look up actual stats.

The stats have always put 13 year olds in a category that has deaths small amounts but still has them.

But you actually have to look them up, because yes, the government saying 'young children' is purposely vague. It means different things to different people.

The government wrong doing this on purpose and it pisses people off.

This makes me feel guilty. I reassured a worried mum who has a child with the same serious health condition I have, that if her young child caught it, he would be fine. Instead she should have been keeping him at home.

Anyone of any age, with serious health conditions are in the vulnerable category.

Unless you are a qualified medical professional you have no business reassuring anyone about anything, or giving any sort of medical advice.

cherrylovex3 · 17/03/2020 08:27

CappyCapCap so glad you cleared it up like that, threads like this honestly just nearly caused me to have an anxiety attack.

people should have their facts before posting titles like this. I know you're scared, but this doesnt help at all

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/03/2020 08:28

Well that seems to be working.
