Gig tomorrow WWYD

This may seem like a minor issue amongst all the major ways the latest announcement will affect people's lives, but I'm interested to hear what the consensus is (and frankly need some advice!)

For context, I hardly ever go out these days as I have two young DC and a DH who works night shifts. I bought tickets to a gig last month as a treat for DH and I. I'm on Mat leave and not currently getting paid so I dipped into my savings for it.

Gig is at a small independent venue in London (not central) and it's tomorrow evening.
Plan was for my DM to babysit.
If I followed government advice we should really stay at home. On the other hand, if I don't go, I probably won't get my money back and the venue will do terribly too (as they rely on drink and food orders for income as well).

Yes I know we should all be limiting social contact, but if schools and my DD's nursery are staying open then isn't it just as likely we will catch it that way? So would you stay at home or not?

It doesn't look like the venue will cancel by the way.

I wouldn't go

Patch23042 · 16/03/2020 22:57

I suspect that it will be cancelled OP.

Autumndaysarehereagain · 16/03/2020 22:57

Don’t go and don’t expose your mother (who may be older/have health problems) to your child! Please take this seriously

Aspoonfullofjam · 16/03/2020 22:59

Don’t go. A concert is not a necessity. I’m sorry it will be disappointing for you. But it’s not important. Everyone is supposed to be avoiding unnecessary social interaction... like going to a concert.

Devlesko · 16/03/2020 22:59

Will it be open?
My dh on his way back, loads of work pulled, he's a freelance musician.
I can't begin to tell you what is happening to the future of service sector industries.
I wouldn't go, but doubt they'll open now anyway.

definitelygc · 16/03/2020 23:00

How would you feel if you gave your mum the virus and she ended up in hospital (or worse)? Not worth it. We've all got to make sacrifices and missing a gig is a fairly small one to make imo.

gingerbread88 · 16/03/2020 23:00

Don't go (if it's on) Gov advice is very clear.

curlyrebel · 16/03/2020 23:10

Ok thanks everyone. You're all right. Must be huge numbers of people who have it here in London and the risk just isn't worth it.

lubeybooby · 16/03/2020 23:12

any responsible venue and artist would cancel for you so don't have to make the decision and can get a refund

curlyrebel · 16/03/2020 23:12

@Devlesko sorry to hear about your DH losing work. Hope you both make it through.

We could all make excuses because we wanted to do something. Please don’t go, if everyone ignores advice we’re in very hot water.

TangoWhisky · 16/03/2020 23:14

Hopefully the artist and venue will cancel it

Bluewater1 · 16/03/2020 23:15

Definitely don't go

TotesGodsWill · 16/03/2020 23:16

Work and nursery to enable you to work are essential

A gig is not. So I wouldn’t go.

curlyrebel · 16/03/2020 23:20

@lubeybooby Not sure if they will yet. The promoter has put something on Facebook saying they're screwed as the government hasn't ordered such businesses to close, so their insurance probably won't pay out.

Basically how, who with and where you, I and indeed all of us in the UK spend our time tomorrow ( and thereafter) will affect ICU capacity in the next 3 weeks and even more likely further after that . Let that sink in - to be blunt.

Lynda07 · 16/03/2020 23:31

It's sad you will have to miss it, curlyrebel, you and many others will be disappointed.

My son is a musician, he was on a European tour but came home from France a week ago, all the shows cancelled from then onwards. He is currently self isolating at home with an American colleague staying who is not allowed to return home to the USA until a month has passed.

Life sucks sometimes, doesn't it? However, life goes on and there will be other opportunities.
