To be more confused after BoJo's press conference than I was before it?

Fev11 · 16/03/2020 20:13

I watched all of today's press conference as i have family members who fall into at risk groups.

The guidance before today was clear to me- self-isolate for 7 days if continuous cough or fever

but now I am not at all clear what it all means. That started with not even being clear at what time the press conference would actually take place!

Surely in a time of global crisis our government should, above all, aim to communicate their plans clearly with specific guidance?

AIBU?

It went on far too long and I tuned out, and they should have allowed only one question per journalist

KMoKMo · 16/03/2020 20:16

Dr Ranj has summed it up.

I actually thought BoJo was quite clear.

Don’t think it attaches.

What?! I thought he was quite clear Confused

Wannabangbang · 16/03/2020 20:20

As usual as transparent as a frosted window. Had to get one of my mates to explain in bullet point form as him waffling on went on for far too long

Ihatesocialmedia · 16/03/2020 20:22

What didn't you understand??

Isthistrueor · 16/03/2020 20:23

I’m 21 weeks pregnant so I’m now feeling severely anxious at the thought of ‘self isolating’ for the next three months. I have primary school aged DC as well so is there really any point in self isolating when they’re still going to school?! I won’t even be able to get them to school and back anyway if I have to stay in, my DH can only help so much and we don’t have any family close by to help. I feel super confused given the fact we were previously told pregnant women were NOT at risk and now they’ve totally changed the goalposts.

Andcake · 16/03/2020 20:23

I thought clear but mostly just rubber stamping what people were doing any way

Ihatesocialmedia · 16/03/2020 20:24

I dont think things have actually changed on how at risk pregnant women are have they? I thought they were just being cautious?

Bluntness100 · 16/03/2020 20:25

I thought it was very clear and am astounded people are so confused by it.

Twillow · 16/03/2020 20:27

Well, someone needs to explain to him the concept of briefing i.e. be bloody brief.
I'm disappointed by all the waffly statements like 'we're not going to be supporting mass events with emergency workers'? What's that about? Just say no mass gatherings, for god's sake.

Probably the same reason, come to think of it, that people are being asked to shun theatres and pubs etc: so staff lay-offs cannot be attributed to the government maybe? There'll be some financial reason at the heart of it.

We must be the only nation clamouring for a lockdown, while the government says we don't want to put you through it.

AdaStarkadder · 16/03/2020 20:27

So if l get the virus l need to stay at home for 14 days with the rest of my family - l get that, but what happens if after a week of my 14 days DP gets the lurgi? Presumably he then starts his own 14 days but can l go out and about when my 14 days are finished or do l have to wait for his fortnight to be up as well?

Janus · 16/03/2020 20:29

I thought it was pretty clear and hate Boris!
If you live alone and get a cough or temperature self isolate for 7 days.
If you have above but live in a family group all of you stay home for 14 days.
From this weekend the over 70s should serious curtail going out.
The only thing I’d be confused about is if pregnant as I’d say it’s the same as if over 70, so stay at home from work for the next 12 weeks?

Notimeforaname · 16/03/2020 20:30

He needs to Lock the country down like most others. Close schools and pubs etc. He's a moron.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 16/03/2020 20:31

For those who say it was clear

When should over 70s isolate from

When do pregnant women isolate from

When do those with chronic illness isolate from

What are they classifying as a chronic illness? Only in this statement they mention chronic kidney disease, cardio vascular disease, people who have the flu jab and a mumbled comment about people with leukemia or lymphoma having even stricter rules. However, those classified as high risk on earlier websites includes those with hypertension and autoimmune disease too.

Ihatesocialmedia · 16/03/2020 20:31

@AdaStarkadder if he has caught it from you then you wont catch it back from him therefore you dont need to isolate twice you just complete your 14 days.

20viona · 16/03/2020 20:33

It was pretty clear and concise tbh.

Ihatesocialmedia · 16/03/2020 20:35

Well now if you'd rather be safe than sorry? What's the point of roaming around for another couple of days until the weekend if you're higher risk?

Winnipegdreamer · 16/03/2020 20:36

I was confused about the flu jab statement too, and then he went on to say people with chronic kidney or heart disease but the flu jab is given to nearly anyone with asthma for example so 🤷🏼‍♀️

Amboseli · 16/03/2020 20:36

I think all at risk groups should self isolate asap. Don't wait for Bojo to give the go ahead, he's hopeless.

The spread is accelerating. We want to slow it. Don't mix with others, stay at home by yourselves as much as possible.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 16/03/2020 20:36

Because my employer might not be prepared to support me any earlier than they have to

generalh · 16/03/2020 20:40

They won`t come out and say a ban etc as they would have to compensate people which is why he is saying he is advising people to avoid social gatherings.
Unless you are a teacher of course!

DinosApple · 16/03/2020 20:41

Actually I wasn't sure.
I've been self isolating since the weekend (fever, cough, aches from Fri night), should I just do the 7 days and the rest of my family 14?

The DC (who I kept off) have a temp tonight - as have I with the rest of the symptoms- DH still hasn't got a temp.

There's debate amongst my colleagues who aren't feverish like me so it can't be that clear.

WickedlyPetite · 16/03/2020 20:41

I thought it was really unclear.

He's "urging" people to avoid non essential appointments and "advising" people to stay away from pubs, bars, theatres.

All the pubs, restaurants, salons, in my area have posted a "business as usual" statement. Why not officially close them down? It'll all be for financial/insurance reasons.

The government are not "supporting mass gatherings" - oh except at my sons school, and schools across the country, where there are 1400 pupils Hmm.

Are all these pregnant women and other stuff risk' groups going to be paid by their employers for self isolating?

Clear as mud

AdaStarkadder · 16/03/2020 20:41

lhatesocialmedia but if l'm living with someone who has the active virus won't l potentially carry it on my clothes etc even if l'm no longer infectious myself?
