LA seems to have completely shut down. From what I’ve read it tends to be decisions made by the mayor of each City rather than just central government. It does make you wonder why everyone else is shutting up shop except us.

The Netherlands also.

Im guessing large cities in Britain will follow suit, effectively all external entertainment is being closed by suppliers. Once employees and families of start self isolating then the die is cast.

DICarter1 · 16/03/2020 20:08

Does anyone else worry about whether this will encourage anti social behaviour?

Jenasaurus · 16/03/2020 20:11

yes crime rates will increase, there will sadly always be opportunists

I know this isnt funny but I have an image of a bank robber saying, "give me your money, I have a cough and Im not afraid to use it!"

I think we're going to need a agreed definition of "lockdown" on MN because I didn't hear President Macron announcing that everyone should lock themselves into their home.

He did confirm the closures of restaurants, bars and places of mass gathering etc, as announced on Saturday, had a grump about ignoring last weeks pleas by being out and about en-mass at the weekend, for example in the Parisian parks ( but interestingly didn't extend the same grump to cover those who turned out at the various election day events also yesterday), did urge continued social isolation for another 15 days minimum with hints that continued transgression could well result in sanctions..and also announced a package of measures to support industry, business, and the less well off in the community (e.g. no water, gas or electricity bills for those in need).

Cmagic7 · 16/03/2020 20:36

@notimagain Well, possibly being punished for going to meet a friend in a park seems pretty lock-downy to me.

I think they will use the M25 as a London quarantine ring, blocking off the motorway junctions and use the military as reserves and then just patrol the M25 motorway and then use similar tactics elsewhere

ohcarriemathison · 16/03/2020 21:57

Sales of guns and ammunition have went up in USA, probably as people fear looting and opportunist situations.
