Will you still visit pubs & cafes?

Today's advice seems so vague, we've been told to avoid these places yet they haven't been told to close, do they expect pubs to still open and have staff just standing there with no customers?

On my local Facebook page there have already been posts from 4 local pubs and cafés saying they will still be opening and have very strict hygiene standards.

I feel so sorry for the landlords and staff.

Yes if I went to pubs I’d still go. I will
Still go to small cafes and local businesses while we can as they’re being screwed. I might even get a few vouchers for after all this is over to try to support them (risky if they don’t reopen!)
While the schools are still open I will also be sending my kids to their clubs that remain open and having play dates. I might even go to softplay. Socialising IS essential to many people... and I am keeping a close eye on my family temperatures and Health

PurpleDaisies · 17/03/2020 08:39

Socialising IS essential to many people.

Reducing the spread of the virus is essential to far more. You are being incredibly selfish.

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2020 08:39

Why does anyone think they should ignore this advice?

Apparantly because the government hasn’t actually forced them to close down, the clear advice of “avoid pubs, clubs etc” in some way vague.

It’s what Boris said, it’s a massive psychological shift and some people are trying to find any way they can to justify in their heads getting round it. Because they don’t want to do it. They don’t want it to happen. They aren’t thinking of others, of spreading it, or the pressures on the nhs, they are thinking only of themselves and the impact on their lives.

The issue is these people will force us into lock down, one person allowed out at a time, signing a form to get out your house. Forcibly shutting all social venues. These people are going to take us to a level no one wants to get to.

blossombabies · 17/03/2020 08:40

no we wont.

TeddyIsaHe · 17/03/2020 08:44

If the govt doesn’t force closures the restaurants can’t claim on their insurance. It will put thousands out of business.

It’s not wilfully ignoring advice, it’s trying to stop my friends and my local independents going out of business and wrecking our local economy.

TwelveIslands · 17/03/2020 08:46

@Alwaysreadyforbed

What utter garbage. Johnson is a total arsewipe, him and the rest of the Tories, but he was very clear in the press conference.

TwelveIslands · 17/03/2020 08:51

Christ @Isadora2007 that's incredibly selfish!

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2020 09:55

Blimey the lack of knowledge on here is disturbing, they don’t want to force businesses to shut down and claim on their insurance. Hence why they are going to pay employment support to those laid off during this period, with immediate Effect and why they are putting measures in place so businesses can shut for the period then immediately re open when the time comes, why people are going to get mortgage holidays and why interest rates are slashed. They are attempting to support during a hiatus and then make sure they can reopen immediately when this is over and prevent businesses going bust for good.

The hysteria and mis information needs to stop. I get people are angry but posters lashing out and spreading mis information is not helping anyone. Demanding businesses should be forced to shut down and go bust and claim on their insurance is beyond ludicrous. Much better to support an interim closure that enables them to re open when the time comes.

TeddyIsaHe · 17/03/2020 10:05

@Bluntness100 where has it been said that they’re paying staff employment support? I haven’t seen this, just lots and lots of restaurants worried out of their minds that they aren’t going to survive this.

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2020 10:23

Then google it.

TeddyIsaHe · 17/03/2020 10:25

Obviously I have or I wouldn’t be asking! Ffs 😂

TeddyIsaHe · 17/03/2020 10:31

Also I don’t think you understand how hospitality insurance works. Govt announcing temporary closure: claim on insurance for loss of earnings. There’s a forced closure clause. They can still reopen when the time comes, it’s not permanent.

Govt telling people to stay away but not officially enforcing closure: businesses still have to pay overheads/staff wages and can’t claim on insurance.

We1shBird · 17/03/2020 10:33

I had to go out today to take children to school and hunt for toilet roll. Drove past a packed Costa coffee and found it quite surprising that people were going on with non-essential stuff. We’re def heading for enforced restrictions if people carrying on like it doesn’t apply to them.

LesLavandes · 17/03/2020 10:37

I am so fed up of people not paying attention to what is being asked of them in this period of crisis. Fgs. DO WHAT YOU ARE ASKED!

PleaseStopCrying · 17/03/2020 10:43

Had to post as Boris Johnsons dad is not only on TV today despite being over 70 and it not being necessary to do so but he has just said that he would still go to the pub tonight. So apparently social isolation and the instrction not to visit pubs etc doesnt apply to him. Hmm

TeddyIsaHe · 17/03/2020 10:49

This explains it succinctly.

Will you still visit pubs & cafes?
MozzchopsThirty · 17/03/2020 10:58

@PleaseStopCrying I just watched that
What a dick that man is
Really surprised they let him on making out to millions watching that you can still pop to the pub if you feel ok

He is a great advert for why boris should enforce isolation

PleaseStopCrying · 17/03/2020 11:04

I just watched that What a dick that man is.

Thank goodness others saw it too I have a funny feeling it wont be on the catch up program later as its going against all current advice. I was sat watching it thinking I surely wasn't hearing him correctly.

midwestspring · 17/03/2020 12:56

Countries all around the world of every political persuasion are following social isolation.
It is one of the few tools we have for managing a pandemic.
C19 doesn't give a hoot about your politics.
Whether you you finically support people as they socially isolate is a political decision but social isolation itself isn't.

bubba22 · 17/03/2020 12:57

No because we’ve been told not to

willdoitinaminute · 17/03/2020 13:02

If they said avoid eating cheese because it has been heavily infected with Coronavirus would that be easier to understand. It’s not the fact other people are there it’s the fact that other people have probably spread Coronavirus all over every possible surface. The measures used to decontaminate cafes and pubs is no where near what is required to remove the virus.

Marilynmansonsothereye · 17/03/2020 13:08

No. And pubs are a large part of my life as a 30something singleton with a dog. Almost a daily occurrence and somewhere I socialise, read, keep sane after a horribly turbulent year. But no. We need to protect our health and that of others.
