Will you still visit pubs & cafes?

Today's advice seems so vague, we've been told to avoid these places yet they haven't been told to close, do they expect pubs to still open and have staff just standing there with no customers?

On my local Facebook page there have already been posts from 4 local pubs and cafés saying they will still be opening and have very strict hygiene standards.

I feel so sorry for the landlords and staff.

OP posts:

I work in a cafe so I'll have to go. I hope people will stay away even though it'll be bad news for my hours/job.
I'm part of a cinema thing so hopefully I'll be forced shut soon. No good telling people to stay away but not closing it

GrumpyHoonMain · 16/03/2020 20:51

My parents are high risk and I plan to visit so I can’t. But I probably would if it’s just myself / DH and my baby

Goldenbear · 16/03/2020 20:56

No, have you seen the death toll in Italy today, it is very hard to change our lives in such a radical way but people need to comprehend this.

meredithgrey1 · 16/03/2020 21:19

we've been told to avoid these places yet they haven't been told to close

The cynic in me says that this is for boris's pals in the insurance industry. If the government orders closures, they'll have to pay out, if they shut of their own accord (because Boris has told everyone to avoid them), they won't.

Macaroni46 · 16/03/2020 23:21

Meanwhile schools are open and have been told that the way to resolve potential staffing shortages (pregnant teachers, those needing to isolate) by making classes bigger??!!
Yes many pupils will be absent and yes many parents are choosing to keep their children home but schools still need a minimal number of staff to operate safely.
The pressure on schools is immense at the moment due to covering for absent colleagues, preparing remote curriculums in the event of closure, sending work home to those who are off as well as providing the normal teaching. Time for schools to close I say!
Never thought I'd say that but as a member of SLT I can tell you we're at breaking point. Not fair on anyone. Pupils of staff.

TwelveIslands · 16/03/2020 23:26

It's only vague to people who want to keep doing things until they're forced not to.

We'll be in lockdown soon because of this.

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2020 07:00

Agree it’s only vague to those who don’t want to do it and are looking for an excuse not to. The fact pubs or clubs might be open clearly doesn’t mean you have to go to them. It’s ludicrous to suggest its vague.

Alwaysreadyforbed · 17/03/2020 07:04

Can we please stop blaming the tories for these measures???? It’s a cross party decision!! Ffs. Thick as fuck

whiskeylullaby2 · 17/03/2020 07:10

I won't be. I have no idea how pubs and restaurants are going to survive this

emilybrontescorsett · 17/03/2020 07:12

No I won’t stop criticising the government.
Have you actually listened to BJs latest speech on the issue?
He did not answer the questions asked of him. He is not a clear and decisive leader he comes across as knowing fuck all. If he was in charge of my dcs school I believe parents would be withdrawing their dcs faster than you could say covid 19.
The people who voted for this government have reaped what they sowed. Selfish behaviour and now shock that others can behave selfishly.
The irony of moaning about not being able to see a doctor when you voted conservative.

Alwaysreadyforbed · 17/03/2020 07:15

Yes , I watched it and yes, he was very clear. I am honestly astounded that people didn’t think he was but that’s left wingers for you.
If you are against what he’s doing then start criticising Labour, SNP etc as they all agree with it.
You won’t though, will you because it doesn’t suit your pathetic agenda

Bin85 · 17/03/2020 07:20

Unfortunately no
DH and I are in our 60s with some health issues so we are socially isolating now

emilybrontescorsett · 17/03/2020 07:27

I don’t have a pathetic agenda. Boris did not answer the questions he was asked.
And once again, I’m sick and tired of hearing Tory voters moaning because they can’t see a doctor. You reap what you sow.
This government do not care if your family die, they only care about money, their money.
They set the example others follow.
They encourage selfishness , why are people surprised when others behave I’m a selfish way.

emilybrontescorsett · 17/03/2020 07:29

Example:
If both parents have to stay off work to look after their child, will they get paid?
Bj did not say yes or no.
Therefore he did not answer the questions asked of him.
You must be very dense if you don’t understand that.
He was not clear.

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2020 07:31

God, when you start to make something like this about politics you know you’ve got issues.

The Tories won. Really time to accept it,

emilybrontescorsett · 17/03/2020 07:39

I don’t have to listen to what some ignorant fool says.
If you trust the word of BJ then carry on.
I do my research and prefer to listen to medical experts not some dick who doesn’t give a shit about me or my family.
I’m keeping safe.

TeddyIsaHe · 17/03/2020 07:45

Stop blaming the Tories 😂😂😂

They are the ones in power and so shall be blamed. They have a majority, their decision is final.

Boris is fucking small businesses and local independents hard for not forcing the closures. They can’t claim on insurance without this happening. Hundreds if not thousands are going to lose their businesses because this govt is so incompetent.

So I will still be using my local pubs/restaurants until they are forced to close. They don’t deserve to lose their life work because of a crackpot govt.

emilybrontescorsett · 17/03/2020 07:57

It is about politics.
Fuck you need to educate yourself.
You really have been brainwashed.
This government do not give a fuck if you die, your kid dies, your mother dies etc etc.
If everyone took their example then your child’s teacher would say.
Sod this, I’m self isolating.
So would the hospital staff
So would the coroners
So would the supermarket staff
So would the delivery drivers
Ironic.
You vote for a selfish self absorbed government then start crying when someone says I’m still going to do as I please!
If you cannot see how you have been mugged then you are stupid.
Cafes/bars etc need the government to act.
But they won’t because if they shut them down then the insurance companies will have to pay out.
Why do you think Boris, and it is his responsibility, hasn’t done this.
Oh hang on because him and his Tory cronies are stakeholders within these insurance companies.
Christ open your bloody eyes.
We will all be fucked by the actions of this useless government.
Your pension will suffer.
Your tax bill will suffer.
Your health will suffer,
But you carry on with your head in the sand.

TeddyIsaHe · 17/03/2020 07:59

@emilybrontescorsett hear bloody hear.

LuluJakey1 · 17/03/2020 08:12

No we won't. As DD (almost3) has had a dry, persistent cough for 3 days and I had one (although mine went away to be replaced by a bit of a cold) we now all have to self-isolate for a fortnight. DH is frustrated - he is a Headteacher and feels he needs to be at work. I don't think either DD or I have it. We are both fine, no raised temps, not feeling ill. DS1(5) has no symptoms and is currently upset because he wants to goto school. Ds2 (7m) is fine.
However, we have decided to follow the instructions. But we will go for a long walk every day, somewhere we won't meet people. We'll drive to a Northumberland beach and take some drinks. Today we are going to Cheswick - I don't think I have never met anyone else on Cheswick beach. May see a distant dog-walker.
DH has had DS2 out for a walk at 5am this morning on the seafront-it was deserted except for two runners.

This is a petition calling for Johnson to actually take control and close the pubs, clubs and restaurants so everyone knows exactly where they stand.

LuluJakey1 · 17/03/2020 08:23

There must be someway of people being offered the chance to do a different job whilst this is all happening eg supermarkets, help the elderly, childcare/education provision for NHS staff (once schools close), more NHS staff, delivery drivers. There will be more but you get the idea. If you work in retail or hospitality and it closes (for example) why can't people be offered the chance to work in an area where more staff are needed and still be paid?

SisterVanHelsing · 17/03/2020 08:24

Friends who own cafes are opening today. I feel awful for them, they are in such a hard place, but I won't be visiting Sad.

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/03/2020 08:30

The owner of a local micro pub says he will do deliveries if he has to close but at the moment he is in limbo.

SallyWD · 17/03/2020 08:34

I don't understand why people are even thinking about this. Our government (who are being much more relaxed than other governments) have told us the virus is spreading very quickly, nearing it's peak and we SHOULD NOT go to pubs, restaurants, cafes etc. Why does anyone think they should ignore this advice?!
