Adults who require a flu jab for any chronic illness to self-isolate for 12 weeks

My ds 20 and I are both asthmatics who require an annual flu jab - do we fall into this category then? And what is even the point if dh is out working everyday in contact with the public.
None if this makes sense - what a bloody nightmare.

What about things like getting prescriptions? If I have to self isolate I’m going to die anyway without insulin. Honestly I feel like jacking it all in now.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 16/03/2020 18:37

Just read the speech has he states that those in high risk categories work from home where you can and avoid public gatherings and those with the most serious conditions to self isolate.

Butterbear86 · 16/03/2020 18:38

How can they police it? How can they tell who has a chronic condition and who hasn’t? If it does become compulsory. Also my children won’t be in school then because I won’t be able to take them and fetch them.

ACautionaryTale · 16/03/2020 18:40

@LivinLaVidaLoki

Another classic example of people not reading something properly.

If there is one thing this has shown is the poor comprehension and basic numeracy skills of a large portion of the UK population

ednatheevilwitch · 16/03/2020 18:42

The advice is so flaky it's confusing most people. I have asthma and get the flu jab. So I'm at risk not not the mostet seriously at risk. So work from home but don't self isolate unless symptomatic?

Ramalamalama · 16/03/2020 18:43

Is this the guidance? The flu jab group are the ones who need to isolate? I'm desperately trying to find information on this as I don't know if I'm included (immune-suppressed), all I heard in the press conference was heart problems, kidney disease and pregnant women. Please could someone tell me? I am so stressed and would just like some justification for working from home I can pass on to work. Thanks

ArkAtEee · 16/03/2020 18:46

@Butterbear86 there are online prescription companies who will deliver. Might be a good time to investigate that? You might find your local pharmacy offers this service, several in my area do.

SexTrainGlue · 16/03/2020 18:47

"What about things like getting prescriptions?"

You are allowed out for essentials such as food, medicine and medical appointments. You don't have to starve to death or die of something else. But if you can have someone go for you, or use the delivery service from the likes of Boots, then you should do so

Loppy10 · 16/03/2020 18:47

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Matt Hancock confirms the policy of 'shielding' for 12-weeks from this weekend is 'for the most vulnerable'

It's for those with serious underlying health conditions

Says that NHS will be in touch if you need to go into self-isolation

Ramalamalama · 16/03/2020 18:47

Can you put the echo app on your phone? I've just set it up, it was much easier than I thought it would be, they get your prescription from your gp and post it to you - you just pay the prescription charge. I think they're going to do quite well out of this situation...

ghostyslovesheets · 16/03/2020 18:48

I get it for CKD but it’s early stage and very mild so I’m totally confused about my risk!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/03/2020 18:48

I wondered about that too. I have an annual 'flu jab and I'm asthmatic. Both of my DC will be in school.

It really wasn't very clear was it?

Em308 · 16/03/2020 18:49

T2 diabetic, receive the annual flu jab, have 12 weeks left on my college course I've paid over £2000 to do, not possible to do online as very hands on 😢

Butterbear86 · 16/03/2020 18:49

I feel as though I’d sooner take my chances with the virus. If I show any signs of course I’ll stay at home. If I get it and I’m really ill I’ve already told dh not to bother taking me to hospital - so I won’t be costing anyone any money or taking up a bed a healthy person could use.

DentalPatient · 16/03/2020 18:50

I am eligible for flu jab as I am very overweight, am I supposed to self isolate for three moths?

LuxLFC · 16/03/2020 18:50

@FailingMeansYouArePlaying did you get the flu jab last time round? Speak to your doctor if you're not sure what to do.

Guttersnipe · 16/03/2020 18:51

I didn't think they said self isolate. They said people who have the flu vaccine should be shielded from social contact. Is that the same thing? I took it to mean they should be extra careful following general social distancing measures.

SexTrainGlue · 16/03/2020 18:51

"The flu jab group are the ones who need to isolate?"

That's not what they said - it's the wording which seems to be going round on social media at the moment. It's not an exact match, but not unrelated either

The affected groups are the pregnant, the over 70s and those with underlying medical conditions.

If you're not sure if your medical condition n 'counts' then see if it's specifically listed on NHS website, ask an HCP at next appointment if you have one in the offing, or check with the support organisation and/or big charity for the condition

Butterbear86 · 16/03/2020 18:53

They talked specifically about those with lung conditions I believe.
I think most of us class as vulnerable but not the most serious.

SexTrainGlue · 16/03/2020 18:53

"I didn't think they said self isolate. They said people who have the flu vaccine should be shielded from social contact. Is that the same thing? I took it to mean they should be extra careful following general social distancing measure"

They did say self isolate, and to expect it to last for a minimum of 12 weeks:

"Pregnant women, people over the age of 70 and those with certain health conditions should consider the advice "particularly important", he said.
People in at-risk groups will be asked within days to stay home for 12 weeks."

The general population, especially in London, is being asked to follow the general social distancing advice.

I'm exactly the same ghosty. I must admit I was feeling pretty confident that coronavirus wouldn't bother me this morning, but I'm now feeling quite shaky and anxious. I am otherwise fit and healthy. Damn them for making me anxious! I wish I had not listened to the news conference now.

ghostyslovesheets · 16/03/2020 18:55

NHS website - I couldn’t find anything and my condition has stages it’s not all the same - so when Bozo says ‘CKD’ he needs to be more specific

BeBraveAndBeKind · 16/03/2020 18:55

The statement says "people in at-risk groups will be asked within days to be "largely shielded from social contact" for 12 weeks" so that's social contact - no pubs, clubs, gatherings, theatre. My understanding is that it's working if you can't work from home but going out the bare minimum unless you can stay a decent distance from other people (a walk in the woods for example).

I get a flu shot and so does my son who's still in school. I can work from home but my DH works at a school as well so we're maintaining rigorous hand washing and just hoping that no one brings anything home.

ghostyslovesheets · 16/03/2020 18:55

Yes Gutter I’m the same x

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/03/2020 18:56

there are online prescription companies who will deliver. Might be a good time to investigate that. I understand that some of them had a 3 week backlog over Christmas 2018.

It might be better to see if your local pharmacy can deliver your prescriptions.
