Anyone else pregnant and now thinking wtf am I meant to do? I've felt OK about it all as thought low risk, even GP said no special concerns, and now talk of 12 week isolation. I could greet!!

I think what we can read from what the government said today is:

  1. There is no evidence that pregnant women are definitely going to get More ill/die from coronavirus
  1. HOWEVER not enough pregnant women have contracted coronavirus For them to be absolutely sure that pregnant women definitely aren't higher risk
  1. Therefore as a precaution they are advising pregnant women to practice self isolation/social distancing wherever possible.

I for one am not able to work from home in my job, however I am going to be enquiring with my employer about having an isolation room at work which I can work in so I can minimise contact with others, and when at home I will practice the joys of self-isolation.

I was pregnant during the swine flu scare in 2009-2010.

I was offered the vaccine and the rationale was that when you are heavily pregnant, your lung capacity is restricted because of the space taken up by the baby prevents you from being able to fully expand your lungs.

I would imagine the logic here would be the same.

TheWildPlaces · 16/03/2020 18:24

@SkaLaLand I have a retail job and on my last shift served over 200 people. I'm 28+4. Serving that many doesn't sound like 'social distancing'.

It's frustrating that they've done this press conference at the end of the day now that all the HR departments have gone home...

1990shopefulftm · 16/03/2020 18:25

I m going to carry on going into work and being careful but otherwise, leave the house as little as possible.
I think the government has added pregnant people because they don't know enough and they'd rather say well we did warn you rather than not say anything and have some pregnant people become seriously ill.

LatteLover12 · 16/03/2020 18:26

I'm trying to decide whether to message my HT tonight and tell him I'm pregnant/disappearing for 3 months or to pop into work first thing and see what he says face to face...

What would you do?

mbhgfcbyyrrx · 16/03/2020 18:28

And didn't they say only in the third trimester??

Chanel05 · 16/03/2020 18:28

@LatteLover are you a teacher? I am too and my brain is completely boggled now.

Chanel05 · 16/03/2020 18:29

Sorry @LatteLover12

Grasspigeons · 16/03/2020 18:31

I had swine flu in 3rd trimester and can confirm coughing with a baby's bum in my ribs was 'uncomfortable' something doesnt need to be fatal to make life miserable. It also meant i had to have a different treatment than tamiflu so perhaps available treatments are a factor. I had relenza.

Sprintfinish · 16/03/2020 18:32

I work part time in an office, but unfortunately can't work from home. Not sure what to do! Also have child at nursery while I work, so if I have to self isolate do I keep him home incase he brings home germs? Too many questions and no answers until next update "towards the weekend" according to 6 o'clock news. I'm 22 weeks and high risk pregnancy already.

Like everything, you ALWAYS have to be more cautious and do more than the government say. They have no ides which could mean anything.

Alyssum34456 · 16/03/2020 18:34

Concerns are early pregnancy. Think about it, no person who was in early pregnancy with covid19 has had their baby yet :( please always be more cautious
.

mamaof2girls · 16/03/2020 18:41

@mbhgfcbyyrrx I thought they said something about 3rd trimester but little one was crying at the time so missed it and wouldn't let me go back!

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 16/03/2020 18:43

21 weeks here and becoming more and more anxious. Nothing seems to be made clear.
WHO stated young people and children have died. Yesterday pregnant women were at no extra risk. So much conflicting information Sad

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 16/03/2020 18:47

It was on the WHO press release at 4pm, they think that children and pregnant women might be at more of a risk than thought but l didn't catch all of it to know why. It's a precaution, it's such a new disease, better to be safe than sorry.

Random18 · 16/03/2020 18:47

This may be to protect the midwives and keeping Labour suites as safe as they can.

They didn't say there had been a specific risk identified.

TinnedPearsForPudding · 16/03/2020 18:47

Yep, nelly pregnant A&E nurse here .... interesting times....!

Random18 · 16/03/2020 18:49

You would be able to get a sick line for the 12 weeks.

I would personally take DC out of nursery.

Sunshine1235 · 16/03/2020 18:53

@mamaof2girls I think the bit about third trimester was making the point that they’ve only got stats from women who were in their 3rd trimester as no one who has contracted it in earlier trimesters has had their babies yet

LatteLover12 · 16/03/2020 18:56

I am @chanel05

I've decided to go in early tomorrow and speak to my boss before the kids come in.

I'm hoping he just sends me home but I'm scared what 12 weeks of staying at home will do to my mental health.

Butterwhy · 16/03/2020 18:59

From what they have said it's because they cant prove they aren't higher risk, rather than particular concerns. Also it protects midwives, we don't have enough anyway, if there's less chance of women coming in for checks and appointments with it, the risk is reduced even if it's just a bit.

@towerse have you spoken to your manager? I would absolutely recommend doing so asap and push for a risk assessment and hopefully something to change.

NemophilistRebel · 16/03/2020 19:01

Also less lunch room in pregnancy
More chance of extra workload on nhs staff if pregnant people get it close to birth
Potential separation of mother and baby leading to distress and contact issues

NemophilistRebel · 16/03/2020 19:02

So to be clear - are they saying pregnant people are in the same group as over 70’s and have to isolate at home for 12 weeks or that they should just minimise contact and work from home if possible?

Puzzlepiece28 · 16/03/2020 19:03

I’m newly pregnant and hadn’t planned on telling people until I’d reached 12 weeks, but feel like I need to start disclosing it to people now that pregnant women fall into the high risk category. I don’t really feel ready yet but at the same time feel like I will need to explain sooner than I had planned to......

BuffaloCauliflower · 16/03/2020 19:03

I’m 4 and half weeks pregnant and pretty sure I already have it, coughing started today and I work in London and have been all over public transport. Will be isolating our household for 14 days, luckily it’s just me and DH and we can both work from home, but not sure what to make of being put into this at risk group now. If it’s just to avoid getting it I fear it’s too late.
