Should I cancel mother's day plans

I had planned to take my mum out for an afternoon tea for mother's day. She is 51 so not elderly or vulnerable. I feel bad cancelling as I had booked into a local tea room and they will probably lose a lot of business but in light of today's announcement would you cancel?

Unbelievable!

If MN is anything to go by, then we'll have the place to ourselves.

TwelveIslands · 16/03/2020 20:04

Well at least you don't lack self awareness @SilverPepperOfTheStars !!!

I guess we're getting a taste of the full wartime experience and I understand now the real reasons rationing was brought in!

We've cancelled ours

ShastaBeast · 16/03/2020 20:06

I would go as long as you are taking precautions. I’d go out to support local businesses. We are limiting contact not locking down - schools are still open after all.

I might not if it was my mum as she is more vulnerable due to her health.

Of course cancel! You’re sitting beside strangers for a prolonged period of time. The ignorance of some posters is shocking.

Look I don't think we need to add an epidemic of economics driven suicides to our problems do we? I've just booked to go out in fact. And sent them a nice email explaining why.
I'm not going accept it's safe for my children to go to school with other 1000 other people and unsafe for me to sit in a restaurant with less than 20.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/03/2020 20:22

Cancel.Im supposed to be going out for a meal with my mum too but we'll go next year instead

FusionChefGeoff · 16/03/2020 20:27

You are supposed to assume you have the virus but are asymptomatic. This is about reducing the need for ICU beds as there aren't enough.

Children don't tend to need ICU beds if they get it so schools not such a big issue. Vulnerable teachers now told to stay at home.

Taking your child to school - not a big chance of infecting anyone as you're not touching anything / in close proximity to anyone.

Going to a restaurant is MUCH more likely you will infect someone as you're there for much longer, you touch things, move around, go to the loo etc and they may then need an ICU bed.

She's 51? My she's hardly elderly...she's younger than my mum and I'm in my early 20s...

Cook her dinner at your house so you're not at restaurants
