Paying full nursery fees while closed

We have been informed we will have to pay full nursery fees if the nursery has to close.

AIBU to fight this?

I don’t want to loose my DS’s place at the nursery as he is happy there and it took time for him to settle in but can’t afford to pay. I don’t want them to go bust so I’m willing to pay some but surely they would be making a huge profit if we all pay full fees while they close?

I would accept half pay, but can't afford full pay. If they try to charge full pay and this goes on for weeks and weeks I will have to give notice out of necessity.

Mrhodgeymaheg · 16/03/2020 18:07

For those that think nursery staff will get paid, I think this is highly unlikely. I work for a very large organisation with good benefits and I won't even get paid if the schools shut. That's why when some insist on charging full pay and there's talk of rent and mortgage breaks I'm a bit Hmm

Undecided91 · 16/03/2020 18:07

Government must step in!!!!! They are doing it in all other 1st world countries. Meanwhile in UK......

Totally agree with this, but the banks will get the bailout with tax payers money, and as usual, the very people who pay in to the system so that it helps them when they most need it will suffer.

TotesAwks · 16/03/2020 18:32

If our nursery closes and I still get paid from work then I expect to still pay nursery fees and our dog walker fees. If I'm forced to take unpaid leave then I don't know how we're going to be able to afford it. I might just have to give up working entirely to look after DD and pray DH doesn't lose his job.

Wattagoose90 · 16/03/2020 18:48

I go to the pub every Friday but I'm not going to keep paying for a glass of red each week if they have to close.

Controversial but just putting another spin on it. (I don't actually go to the pub every Friday - I wish!!!)

It's such a tough one. I'm sure my work would pay me if I had to self isolate but it's not their policy to pay if we can't come in due to childcare falling through. I physically couldn't afford to pay childcare fees if not being paid by work. I absolutely would pay if work was paying me though.

Uncertain times all around.

Incrediblytired · 16/03/2020 18:52

I’m fully expecting to pay if they close. It’s not that I’ve got the money to throw around but I can’t see how staff would get paid if they don’t charge fees. All the staff have children of their own and it must be hard to manage on the relatively low pay of a nursery assistant so I don’t begrudge it.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/03/2020 18:53

I understand having to pay- however I’m still paid as able to wfh. there’s no easy moral answer as yes some parents won’t get paid not to work but then there are nursery staff who I think deserve to be paid.
It boils down to contract and hopefully a nurseries insurance.

Babymamaroon · 16/03/2020 19:04

If you want to have a nursery to use when this is all over, I'd pay the fees.

Chloemol · 16/03/2020 19:05

If you and the rest don’t want to pay them then fine don’t, but don’t expect it to be there when the all clear is given

Fuzzyspringroll · 16/03/2020 19:24

We're closed for at least 5 weeks. I'm working from home so should still get paid. I'm at an independent school. However, if parents decide not to pay fees anymore, we've got a bit of an issue. Neither their children nor I might have a school to go to at the end.
I'm still expecting to pay nursery fees although DS isn't going.

MowCopCastle · 16/03/2020 19:33

Plus where we are we get 30 hours childcare funded per week so I would be asking as many parents as possible to sign up to that temporarily to allow the nursery to claim payments from the government.

Our LA is currently refusing to say if we'll get funding if we're not open. It also only allows claims at certain times.

Neverender · 16/03/2020 19:36

I'd rather support DD's nursery (and those who can't pay) and have the same safe childcare setting for her to return to. I'd be gutted if it closed forever.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 16/03/2020 19:44

I would be questioning why they didn’t cover themselves with insurance.

They should certainly be offering reduced fees.

GoldenPoppy · 16/03/2020 19:44

As a nursery nurse from a lage chain we have been told that parents will be charged full rate but staff will not be paid

Mysterian · 16/03/2020 19:44

I work at a nursery. Zero hours, so if it shuts I'm unemployed.

Neverender · 16/03/2020 19:51

GoldenPoppy that's awful - how do they justify that?

Neverender · 16/03/2020 19:52

I'll happily hire someone from nursery to look after DD

Iveneverwonanoscar · 16/03/2020 20:35

As a nursery nurse from a lage chain we have been told that parents will be charged full rate but staff will not be paid

☝️ that is outrageous

I think it would be ok for nurseries to ask for reduced fees, but full fees are not fair because ultimately you're not receiving the service. Staff should also of course be paid, although perhaps a reduction in wage to offset the parents fees since they're not travelling for work or working.

There's just no easy answer. Everyone is stuffed in some way whatever industry you're in.

Mysterian · 16/03/2020 20:39

As a nursery nurse from a lage chain we have been told that parents will be charged full rate but staff will not be paid

They have very good reasons and it's perfectly fair and sensible...

...so there's no reason why you shouldn't tell us which chain it is. It's not like it's a shameful policy that they need to keep quiet.

(I'm guessing it's insect related.)

Babymamaroon · 16/03/2020 20:55

Mysterian if the nursery are charging full fees, why should they not pay staff? Confused

Mysterian · 16/03/2020 21:02

There's a very good reason why not, which means they won't mind if GoldenPoppy tells us which chain it is. Then they will be able to receive all they great PR they deserve.

OffThePlanet · 16/03/2020 21:44

How can parents pay for child care which is closed. Which then means it causes them to not be earning any money to pay for the child care.

Governments need to give more thought and at the least request the banks give their customers a few months off from paying their loans. The UK banks received a bank rescue package of up to $500 billion bank at a cost to the taxpayer. They have since made huge profits.

Sexnotgender · 16/03/2020 21:44

Wow, if the nursery are receiving full payments and not paying staff that’s appalling 😱

peachgreen · 16/03/2020 21:57

I'm happy to keep paying but I would be apoplectic if I found out staff weren't being paid.
