This is an uplifting thread, positive ideas and initiatives only please

I am half British/half European. I am in constant contact with my family members from Italy and Central European countries and they shared some amazing local initiatives with me. I thought I'd share them on here as we all need our spirits lifted! And we can replicate them!

  • Restaurants and catering businesses: shut to customers, but continue deliveries (50% capacity). Crowdfunding campaigns organised to raise money to keep them going at full capacity - the remaining 50% of the time they cook for the local NHS, for free. Meals on wheels delivered to hospital doors for all medical staff. People make less money, but they've kept their jobs and businesses afloat.
  • Artists and theatre companies organising subscription channels to show their performances online. Individual artists performing to neighbours from balconies/outside their homes to cheer them up.
  • Manufacturers switching to manufacturing items of necessity - particularly sanitising and hygiene products.
  • Neighbours knocking on elderly/vulnerable neighbours' doors, chatting through the door and doing shopping for them. Call chains - every person calls two numbers on their phone list every other day to check if everything is OK. Chatting is so important.
  • Professionals making welfare checks on their clients - this one comes from a lovely lade here on MN 💐 Vets, psychologists, priests, lawyers, you name it, everyone who works with others, particularly vulnerable.
  • Day care for children on a rotation basis offered by neighbours/within the communities.

We're not in a lockdown yet, but we have to help each other. Please share your initiatives and ideas 💐

Fierce and fighting till the very end! Courage, Britain. We can do this together 💐💪

Brilliant idea, we need to be kind and considerate to each other. My local village is appealing for people to shop local, I would shop there twice weekly, were I able to actually drive around without difficulty and park, I give up after twenty minutes and go somewhere else.

MrsMGE · 16/03/2020 08:32

I agree, I think we all need to put extra effort in for the sake of all of us.

More ideas - my family and friends in Milan get private PT classes and tutoring via Skype, as well as therapy/counselling. Most of them can work from home and therefore still have reasonable income coming in (so far). Whilst we're all cutting down, if we can, we should keep our services going - it's so, so important longer term not to cancel everything. It's also very important to keep fit and look after your MH now 💐

Our village has set up a village support group with a team of about 50 volunteers ready to help people who are self isolating over the coming weeks. There is a whats app group and posters/leaflets going up everywhere.

I think supporting local restaurants/takeaways while they’re still open (and if you want to save all your stockpiled food!) is a good idea too

Really nice to see a positive thread in amongst the steady doom and gloom. We have to keep going... until we don't.

Titsywoo · 16/03/2020 08:45

Our village has also set up a support group which i have signed up for. I think the first thing will be handing out leaflets so people know who to contact when they need help then it will be running errands etc for those self-isolating/the elderly.

PutYourBackIntoit · 16/03/2020 08:45

Yes!! This is what we need!

Our family is in isolation and our town has been so supportive, a postcard initiative, a Facebook group listing what help people are able to give and what needs others have.
The Long Table (food waste to feast) initiative is now delivering home cooked meals for £5 per portion.

How many people does a portion serve?

MrsMGE · 16/03/2020 09:25

I also read a lot about baby clubs - 💐 to new and expecting mums now, it's hard. A topic close to my heart as I would have been on mat leave now but sadly things went wrong twice. If there are any providers here, please consider delivering the classes online, it's so important. Loneliness can be a huge issue right now, especially in such circumstances 💐

Also, in true Italian style, my friends have a weekly Aperol spritz on Friday, via Skype 🍹 May it never run out!

On the news last night it showed a woman of 72 skyping her DD (or DGD) - they are planning a skype cook-a-long and book club amongst other things whilst the older lady is self isolating Smile

TedsFederationRep · 17/03/2020 12:49

Our village is organising - the village shop is coordinating all of this.

We have to self-isolate. Our neighbours either side and the two at the back are all elderly so we are arranging a weekly Garden Chat: everyone to stand in their own garden with a cuppa and project their voices over the fence for a laugh and a natter. Weather permitting, of course.Smile

Just read Morrisons is creating 3,500 jobs to cope with soaring demand. Hope this might be of help to those currently out of work 💐

If posted this on a separate thread but it’s now blown up to thousands of volunteers. Facebook groups called “covid-19 mutual aid”. If you search for this along with the name of your town/city. So amazing to see how many people are offering to collect food/prescriptions or just offer a chat to someone isolated
