We have just had a family meeting and made the decision, the children will be kept off from tomorrow

Youngest has a chesty cough so wouldn’t be going in anyway but the other two will also be off for the foreseeable future (two primary and one secondary)

We live in an area where parents and grandparents are older, I have 0 confidence that BOJO, government informants or any scientist in the world really knows how this new virus works and I’m scared!

I read today that the reason behind lots of parents stopping doing what they though was right for their children was fear of judgment, doing the wrong thing, or more importantly doing (for you) the right thing.

I just wanted to share, that we are standing up and doing what feel right for us, do what’s right for you.

I've been thinking about it. Only work a few hours a week as have a child with a disability . I dont believe our scientists know better than those in other countries.

whodunit3 · 16/03/2020 09:45

@Rhinosaurus I haven’t expected, I have been offered, along with the majority of parents in the country.

Imagine isolating for 16+ weeks to then catch it anyway and only be ill for 4 days.

Alice02132354 · 16/03/2020 09:45

@whodunit3
Nobody has a fucking clue not BJ, not his shady scientists
You've lost the plot. "shady scientists" These people are at the top of their profession.. on what basis do you think you've got the skills to render their lifetime of work as "shady"? Like I said, pull yourself together. At least read what they're saying.

Gilead · 16/03/2020 09:46

The experts have been told to come up with a strategy that suits businesses. Funnily enough, many of those businesses aren't going along with it and have asked staff to work from home. Even Lloyds of London closed for 24 hours and had staff from home as a test.
You support what you're hearing as much as you choose. Me, I prefer to go along with the science that has peer reviewed evidence.

Rhinosaurus · 16/03/2020 09:49

@whodunit3 I have seen several threads on here from teachers about the additional pressure that requests for “workpacks” are creating, and have also heard the same from teachers in real life - however if your school are voluntarily supplying them good for you.

Hopefully you didn’t use the pompous template that is doing the rounds on here to contact the school regarding the absence.

Alice02132354 · 16/03/2020 09:51

You? Wow, I wish all the scientists and doctors were like you. I wonder if they've ever heard of a thing called "peer reviewed evidence". They probably get all their evidence reading mumsnet posts. You should be placed in charge I think. You'd do a much better job...you probably have just the right armchair to do it from.

whodunit3 · 16/03/2020 09:54

@tonglong Confused

You do realise that people aren’t isolating their children to protect them from getting sick?!

We are doing it to flatten the curve, and choosing (and yes I lucky I can choose) not to mix them into a busy germ pool and then happily let them spread it around the elderly and vulnerable.

family meeting 😂

whodunit3 · 16/03/2020 09:56

@Alice02132354 you do realise we are on our own with these “top of their game scientists” that no other leading scientist, world leader or government informant agrees with...

Do you realise the WHO is pleading for them to rethink and disagrees entirely?!

Oh here we go. Do you want to know what I've decided? I'll present it in just the ostentatious way you did...
I've decided....
wait for it....
I'm going to listen to our experts and not you.

Rhinosaurus · 16/03/2020 09:58

My DD is taken from home to school by car, She is picked up from school by car and taken home. We are not going out after school, we are not visiting elderly relatives, we are not socialising, we are not coming into contact with anyone outside school/work - what elderly/vulnerable are we putting at risk?

Gilead · 16/03/2020 09:58

Thanks, Alice but I'll hand it over to The Pirbright Institute, or The British Society of Immunology, maybe the School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine all of whom disagree with the government's current philosophy.
There is absolutely NO peer reviewed evidence to support the Witty/Vallance/Johnson stance.

whodunit3 · 16/03/2020 09:58

@Alice02132354

Good on ya, you listen to your one crazy scientist that one one in the world agrees with...

Good luck...I’ve a feeling you’re going to need it.

Yes, I've read the news. I don't understand the details. I presume our guys have also read the news and understand what the WHO is saying more than i do. I'll come clean, last year, i didn't really follow what the WHO was saying day to day.

Elisheva · 16/03/2020 10:10

We are doing it to flatten the curve, and choosing (and yes I lucky I can choose) not to mix them into a busy germ pool and then happily let them spread it around the elderly and vulnerable.
You could surely achieve the same by sending them to school but keeping them away from the elderly and vulnerable?

zefstar76 · 16/03/2020 10:10

Can anyone explain why this post has had such a negative reaction and so maybe insults?

You are doing the right thing for your family and wider community, those that are able to should be doing the same. There are many of us today that have had to make the same choice after we SHOCKINGLY discussed it with the rest of the family.

zefstar76 · 16/03/2020 10:10

*many - tut

category12 · 16/03/2020 10:15

I think it's the tone of it, zefstar76. "Standing up" and "doing my bit" Hmm

Astrabees · 16/03/2020 10:19

If you are going to keep the children indoors in isolation for weeks and weeks the I'd support your decision otherwise not.

I didn't want Brexit, didn't want Boris Johnson as PM and am outraged by most of the policies this government has. I work in social care and we are getting little support. I do however support most of the Coronavirus actions as I think they actually make a lot of sense. It also makes sense for most of us to get it because we really don't want to be facing the risk of infection and running away from it for over a year. The people who are getting it aren't getting it from going to Cheltenham races or a concert.
Provided the government continue to explain the logic then I'm happy to support them on this one.

zefstar76 · 16/03/2020 10:20

The tone? Does that actually hurt anyone?

I genuinely don't understand. She posted to make others aware that people in the same position are not alone in making this choice, it's not an easy one to make.

Zubla · 16/03/2020 10:21

I agree - just rude really

category12 · 16/03/2020 10:22

Doesn't hurt anyone, just irritates people. Irritated people have negative reactions.

whodunit3 · 16/03/2020 10:23

@Elisheva but this only works if absolutely everyone is doing the same which presumably they won’t...
