We have just had a family meeting and made the decision, the children will be kept off from tomorrow

Youngest has a chesty cough so wouldn’t be going in anyway but the other two will also be off for the foreseeable future (two primary and one secondary)

We live in an area where parents and grandparents are older, I have 0 confidence that BOJO, government informants or any scientist in the world really knows how this new virus works and I’m scared!

I read today that the reason behind lots of parents stopping doing what they though was right for their children was fear of judgment, doing the wrong thing, or more importantly doing (for you) the right thing.

I just wanted to share, that we are standing up and doing what feel right for us, do what’s right for you.

Jespers · 16/03/2020 09:13

Good for you, I don't trust the strategy here either.

Foghead · 16/03/2020 09:15

Good for you op.
I’m considering the same. I’ve got friends in the US who are incredulous that I wasn’t keeping them off school already.

Kahlua4me · 16/03/2020 09:17

I think keeping them home if you can is a good thing as it will lessen the risk for those who need to be at school so their parents can work.

maddiemookins16mum · 16/03/2020 09:17

You do what you feel is right for your family. But not everyone has the luxury Op. Plus it makes no difference to me what you’re doing and I trust you are all staying in 24/7 from now on as otherwise it wont make any difference.

Butterwhy · 16/03/2020 09:17

Twinkl are doing a month free access to their resources, I believe some others are as well, worth a Google.

ssd · 16/03/2020 09:18

Good to hear that op, you must do what you feel is right, what more can any of us do?

Dongdingdong · 16/03/2020 09:21

The post you shared is scaremongering and should be deleted. There's a big difference between discussing things and spreading stuff that is scaremongering or, alternatively, downright fucking stupid or potentially dangerous.

I agree, but you'd have to delete pretty much the entire MN coronavirus board if you followed that rationale.

Noodlenosefraggle · 16/03/2020 09:22

I think that people have been wound up by the OP's tone of self-importance. S/he could make the same point in a less virtue-signalling manner. Or perhaps not make it at all.
This. There are a million threads where people have said they are keeping their kids off school. Starting a thread to announce that you are keeping your kids off school for the good of society is what's irritating. Well just do it then instead of telling everyone about your very priveleged position that most people arent in. Well done you for being a sahm to school aged children. Most people dont have that luxury. Well done for being able to afford fines (which wont be enforced btw). Well done you for growing your own vegetables. If you want help with home schooling ask for help with homeschooling.

Dongdingdong · 16/03/2020 09:23

Fucking hell all these people being snidey at scared people. Aren't you all big and fucking funny because you've made a not particularly original put-down to someone for having a family meeting. What a fucking comedian you are.

Aaaaaand breathe.

Alice02132354 · 16/03/2020 09:26

Hey, if you're ill you're ill but everyone needs to reel in their pseudo science crap. You know less about what's going on than bojo. This is the guy setting the strategy and you have to trust our experts:

Alice02132354 · 16/03/2020 09:28

Aaaaaand breathe.
WHAT IRRESPONSIBLE ADVICE. YOU'RE GOING TO KILL EVERYONE.
STOP BREATHING EVERYONE IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO STAY ALIVE!!!!!

Rhinosaurus · 16/03/2020 09:30

Contacted school for a “work pack”? Why should overworked staff at schools be having to teach and also supply work packs to parents who make a choice to keep their child off? The current rules are if a child is kept off school for 45 or more days on unauthorised absence they lose their school place. Wonder if this will be relaxed by the government?

Gilead · 16/03/2020 09:32

How can we trust our experts when they are pursuing a policy that has no basis in fact. There is not one document on herd immunity without vaccines. If herd immunity worked without vaccines we would have herd immunity from polio, smallpox etc. For god's sake, Boris has got it wrong, the whole of the fucking world is telling him so. Even Trump has backed down. Does he think he's Thatcher, if so, now is not the time.

Gilead · 16/03/2020 09:33

Oh, and Patrick Vallance is guesstimating. Something the rest of the world hasn't had to do because they are testing.

whodunit3 · 16/03/2020 09:35

@Rhinosaurus

What planet are you living on?! You do realise we are in the middle of pandemic and most certainly all schools will have some level of preparation for pupil support...

Including both of ours which are voluntarily sending home work and offering online support.

I honestly can’t get my head round people that still think this is all just going to bow over!

OP posts:
Alice02132354 · 16/03/2020 09:36

that we are standing up and doing what feel right for us, do what’s right for you.
Pull yourself together ffs. You've stopped trusting science? Please stop panicking you're scared because you don't have a clue. That is why we have experts guiding us. You need to trust those making the decisions and stop advising people to ignore the experts.. OF THIS COUNTRY

whodunit3 · 16/03/2020 09:36

OP posts:
sanityisamyth · 16/03/2020 09:36

Good for you. I'm glad to hear that you know better than every scientist in the world as you've clearly decided they're not up to the job.

DitheringDoris · 16/03/2020 09:38

I think the op is being sensible. If SAHP are happy to take their children out then that’s a good thing. Schools need to be kept open for the parents who go out to work, teachers will drop like flies within the coming weeks, less teachers, less kids, schools more likely to stay open. Parents should be given the option.
I can’t believe the mocking on here, you obviously still don’t understand the severity of the situation. You will within the next month.

Alice02132354 · 16/03/2020 09:39

@Gilead
What the experts of other nations say is irrelevant because you don't live in those nations. If you live here you have to trust our experts. It's effectively war. They have a strategy and you've got to go along with it rather than wandering off in your own direction. Like it or not this is how it is and you're going along with it.

mummmy2017 · 16/03/2020 09:39

Spanish flu was a pandemic, it was killed by herd immunity
Hence why doctors are saying the only way to kill it is too let it pass through the herd, or do you want ant a repeat next year?

LochJessMonster · 16/03/2020 09:40

A family meeting? Move over COBRA Grin

whodunit3 · 16/03/2020 09:40

@Cam77
Grin Grin Grin

This is the funniest thing I have read on here!

Nobody has a fucking clue not BJ, not his shady scientists, no one, and it is absolutely terrifying.

OP posts:
MrsFitzwilliam · 16/03/2020 09:41

Is there any need for the piss taking of the OP? I'm getting really sick of other people's bad attitude to their fellow human beings.

THIS - A thousand times this. Cant we just be supportive of each other? we all have a shit time ahead and making yourself feel better by trying to belittle others, who are trying their best to do what is right for their own family circumstances, is a vile way to behave.

Rhinosaurus · 16/03/2020 09:41

@whodunit3

As I am a nurse I am well aware of the current situation thanks. My DD has gone to school today. I have nothing against your choices, but why expect “workpacks” when it has been made quite clear that these will be provided in the event of schools closing, but as staff are teaching (and probably filling in for absent staff) they won’t be having time to provide Workpacks to those parents who choose to keep their children off. At no point did I mention it was going to “blow over”, huge extrapolation from you there, hysteria helps nobody.
