But why? Angela Merkel has told the German people be prepared for 70% of the population to get it and they've closed everything down. How is that different to our 60% - 80%? with people being able go about their daily lives

leafyygreens · 15/03/2020 18:48

@juliet Germany are going into lockdown, it’s about flattening the curve to try a limit the pressure on health services, not preventing the number of people who are eventually infected

👍 who knows how much difference it’ll make but I think we have to try anything we can now, we don’t want to look back and wonder if we should’ve done that weeks/months earlier

ShellsAndSunrises · 15/03/2020 18:57

Didn’t Italy’s health service say that they believe closing the schools lead to more people going out, and therefore worsened the spread this weekend?

I’m not sure it’s quite as simple as closing everything and staying at home. It worked for China and Singapore as their people comply. Mumsnet and social media is full of people who won’t, for whatever reason. We issue “advice”, there’s no enforcement unless you are intentionally spreading the virus.

I don’t disagree with any of the flattening the curve logic, but we seem incapable of applying it to any decent level here. Even with all the people self isolating and calling for things to be closed, Birmingham & my local town were manic yesterday, there’s a queue of people trying to get into my local Aldi... the pub is busy, according to their Facebook page; restaurants appear pretty busy. Nobody seems to be staying at home. Who even knows if they’re washing their hands...

Newbeginnings2 · 15/03/2020 19:05

True but we’ve not been told to be in lockdown here at the moment, only if you have symptoms. Think there will always be people who won’t comply but hopefully most will and it’ll make some difference

The UK have stopped testing unless hospitalised

That is incredibly short sighted as we won’t have the data to model any future outbreaks of similar viruses in the future. Fuckwits.

Furthermore without testing they won’t pick up the milder cases which could help prevent the spread (as opposed to waiting until it’s too late).

It’s dangerous, it’s a gamble and it feels like the government are absolute amateurs treating this like a fucking game.
