when are we going into lockdown and closing schools?

Spain, France and now Germany (about to go) in lockdown, so when will we? And when will the schools close? I'm guessing it will be Tuesday/Wednesday time. It's looking inevitable now.

Cookiedough me too. Our slt did reassure us though that they were taking advice from PHE and the dfe.

I think we should let unions know of any concerns.

Noble pointed out elsewhere though, if we are happy for hcp to look after us and our children at their sickest, (and risk catching it) surely we can do what's needed for them?

Grasspigeons · 15/03/2020 20:28

But schools include the most vulnerable. Special schools are still schools. My mainstream has several children and staff with serious conditions.

Shirazza · 15/03/2020 20:31

@feelingverylazytoday

Nah, won't shut up about closing schools, thanks, even if you ask aggressively.

Feeling the over 70 thing is not the golden answer to the problem and the rest of us can go merrily on. Its only a small portion of reducing the curve.

Many people in France and Italy's ICU are under 60.

Acquiring 60% immunity is the only way out of this mess

I thought it was too early to determine whether or not people could become immune to the virus, and that there were concerns about different strains?

ChequerBoard · 15/03/2020 20:49

Great. Let's hope that the theory about immunity is valid then. Because it is just that, a theory, a best guess. No-one knows whether you can be considered immune once you have recovered from the current strain of the virus and no-one knows how the virus will mutate.

feelingverylazytoday · 15/03/2020 20:57

Yes, it's particularly associated with cardiovascular problems, particularly hypertension, which increase with age. People with underlying health conditions are less likely to survive, whatever age they are.
We've known this for years, but people consistently choose to ignore this advice, because eating doughnuts and mcdonalds makes them feel good. Whatever.

Hermie12 · 15/03/2020 21:00

Judging by the rather coded letter received from Dds school today that says more by saying less I’d say school closures are imminent and they know things are about to to happen.

SpokeTooSoon · 15/03/2020 21:06

The HT of your child’s school knows no more than you do. They are sensibly preparing for a suddenly closure.

Michaelbaubles · 15/03/2020 21:07

I agree, and more to the point they will probably find out what happening either at exactly the same time as you do or maybe a couple of hours before. There is no set of people working towards a secret date that we don’t know, except possibly in Westminster. Everyone else is guessing.

BramblyHedge · 15/03/2020 21:09

I have inherited hypertension which is not lifestyle related. I’m 41 with three kids in school. I can’t even eat fucking doughnuts as I’m gluten intolerant (also not my fault). I’ll just wait for the kids to bring this home to me then. Great.

PNomintrude · 15/03/2020 21:11

feelingverylazy your messages are so fucking nasty, shame on you. There is absolutely no need for that.

Yes because the French and Italian people are renowned for their unhealthy lifestyles and bad diets. Give me a break!

Nobody knows why the average age in Italian Icus is getting lower. One theory is because the infection started among the older population first, now spreading to younger people. Another theory is that the virus is mutating. A theory that would completely invalidate the herd immunity principle.

Nobody has said its because Italians eat too many doughnuts or smoke too many cigarettes...

ChequerBoard · 15/03/2020 21:34

Feelinglazy Evidence? Of immunity? From where??

StealthPolarBear · 15/03/2020 21:39

If schools are being kept open for the children of key workers, will this continue into Easter?

starrynight19 · 15/03/2020 21:43

I can see schools being made to ride this out until easter tbh.

MacronsPENswiper · 15/03/2020 21:49

Feeling the herd immunity idea has been ruled out by gov.

My teenage DD has a heart condition. She was born with it. Nothing to do with guzzling doughnuts or McDonalds. I am worried for her but trying to carry on as normal.

MacronsPENswiper · 15/03/2020 21:50

I think schools will be made to ride it out totally.

Nothing the gov has said has given us any indication at all schools will close. They said they will ask whole families to isolate and old people. Nothing else

InFiveMins · 15/03/2020 22:08

I really hope schools aren't closed. The elderly and otherwise vulnerable should be self isolating and should be supported however possible. But there really is no need for such drastic measures.
