when are we going into lockdown and closing schools?
fireflower998 · 15/03/2020 17:04
Spain, France and now Germany (about to go) in lockdown, so when will we? And when will the schools close? I'm guessing it will be Tuesday/Wednesday time. It's looking inevitable now.

So let's think about this. We keep schools open for the children of NHS staff, who are then surely going to be the most likely to come into contact with the virus. Surely this then puts their family members at a higher risk and then their children are coming into school and potentially spreading further to school staff?
Why is there an expectation that teachers and schools should be 'business as usual' yet government organisations, such as Inspectors, have cancelled planned school inspections and visits due to the virus.
It's not making sense.

I know someone who runs a multi academy trust (60+ schools) he doesn’t even know yet. He was convinced it would be last week.
Where I live, if you close the schools, guaranteed Monday town would be overrun with parents and children in primark and McDonald’s. guaranteed. They won’t keep their kids at home. They’ll treat it like an extra holiday.

Our LA called in a representative from every school last week and told them schools will close around 20th to coincide with the Easter hols ..so pupils off for at least a month. Also hand picked schools will be used as make shift hospitals. Wi be asked to clear classrooms with running water

When you say lockdown beginning this week, what kinds of restrictions other than schools closing are you expecting initially.
I think certainly all bars, restaurants and places of entertainment and public gatherings should be closed.
Employers forced to allow work from home to anyone who can possibly do it.
Some kind of restrictions around transport but what?
Only supermarkets and pharmacies remaining open.
Curfew.

Yes they will, the govt will have to close those places at the same time.

Perhaps the legislation to force schools to open actually means open during the Easter, and perhaps summer holidays to provide de facto childcare for children of key workers.
The key worker list would be more than assumed, think delivery drivers, funeral directors, power plant workers, transport workers. Legislation would not be needed otherwise.

@Apple1971 I agree. It’s obvious far more will have been infected to date than is reflected in the figures.
I can’t but feel that a big proportion of the panic or worry is as a result of actually not knowing what on earth is going on.
Don’t panic buy, ( I haven’t bought anything in excess at all) but I can understand people’s concerns. People are going to lose jobs, money, education, and sadly, loads of lives. It’s hard to know what to do because it’s hitting everyone on so many levels.

@Sunshine1239
It wasn't an Irish minister who said schools would close for 16 weeks. Schools in the Republic of Ireland are already closed.
It was the first minister of Northern Ireland, part of the UK, who said this. My guess is that it has already been decided at the highest level and hasn't been announced yet but this is pure speculation on my part. None of us know until it's official.

They are changing the law to allow larger classes per teacher, some schools will be kept open on skeletal staff essentially for childcare for front line workers etc.
We have been emailed and asked to sort out remote learning (basically directing students/parents to what websites to access and print off a few work sheets) apparently this was at the request of the LEA.

My friend works in a school in Germany and the schools in her area will close on Tuesday until 19 April, they’re open tomorrow so teachers can give the children homework for the next 5 weeks. She’s not sure how it will work yet until tomorrow but there’ll be provision to look after children of key workers who need childcare.
