Just witnessed the future in Asda car park!

Just witnessed an elderly lady telling a man in a face mask that "he should be staying at home if he has it"

He then told her that he didn't have it and it was a precaution.

He sounded like he was Italian so she shouted "I bet you have been to Italy"

He then flew into a tirade shouting that she should be self isolating as she was over 70 - and to quote him "you're all going to F**ing die if you don't!

As I walked away they were still screaming at each other from their cars!

Is this the future! We will all be turning on each other!

Bloomin inbreds 😉 Seriously our society is screwed we are an every person for themselves society and you cannot change that mentality. You can see why China does what it does to keep control, I don't condone it though.

Conny848 · 15/03/2020 15:25

@joaniecash I don't think that's fair. Firstly my nan was 15 when the war ended and I said "war and post war". With respect you've never met my nan, so you don't really know what her experiences are. She does not tone things down (trust me, I do know her). Just because my nan's account is different to your nan's doesn't mean that my nan's account is less valid, or that she is looking back through rose tinted glasses. I wouldn't suggest your nan is exaggerating. She just had a different experience.

There are so many things, very inconsequential to them they could've doing to support elderly shoppers n.. Open half and hour early for them
Hold stuff back, have a staff member shop in store for them.. Etc

Not a good idea.

Be careful there are some really angry people projecting there fears and narratives on others, stay safe out there

This. If the hysterical types know that shops are open and they are not allowed to shop... It will be like a zombie film at the entrance to the store, old folk getting mugged for their horlicks as they try to leave.

willowpatterns · 15/03/2020 15:27

I have a very slight cough - normal (asthma and spring-flowering tree related) and when I was in B&M the other day to my surprise I found it quite useful in clearing an aisle of other people Grin

AndromedaPerseus · 15/03/2020 15:29

I’d what I have witnessed this weekend in our local supermarkets continues there will be rationing and an army presence very soon Sad.

JingsMahBucket · 15/03/2020 15:31

@PicsInRed
She started it AND she's racist. 🤷‍♀️

Bingo. Don’t start none, there won’t be none.

themarkofthemaker · 15/03/2020 15:33

Just go shopping at night, that's what I do - far fewer idiots around (in fact far fewer people generally)

middleager · 15/03/2020 15:36

If people are behaving like animals then we need official intervention.

A decision on lockdown and what it might look like. Explaining that supermarkets, garages and banks and chemists will still be open.

Rationing - somebody at CoOp took a whole tray of mini hand sanitisers a couple of weeks ago

A priority slot for the elderly. Both home delivery and physically. If an elderly person cannot order online then maybe a phone service?

Community volunteers.

There will always be those who seek to profiteer from a crisis and some were always waiting to bring out their inner rage/misogyny/racism/ageism, but there are more of us who do not act like this and we need to work together.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 15/03/2020 15:37

My DD saw her neighbour in the supermarket today. She knows her to say hello to and that she's a single mum with 2 children and that she came here as a refugee. So DD gave her her number in case she needs help in the coming storm. The woman burst into tears.

I think that is the future. Lots of very frightened people who feel so alone. Lets hope this crisis brings out the best in us, not just the worst. Ask each other how we're doing. Help to hold each other up.

Doilooklikeatourist · 15/03/2020 15:40

Just back from Tesco ( market town in Wales )
Was busy , but easy to park , lots of empty shelves , but loads of staff filling up and taking away empty cardboard boxes
Low on soap , tinned fish & beans , bread flour , eggs and frozen veg
We panic bought 2 packs of chocolate digestives and some mars bar ice creams
No fighting or swearing , I’m a bit disappointed 😀( not really )

Rollypollyrosie · 15/03/2020 15:41

Let’s hope everyone treats each other as considerately as you DD @MashedPotatoBrainz

LaCherriesJubilee · 15/03/2020 15:41

My other half wore a face mask in supermarket today (not a medical grade one that doctors wear, just wore what we had which is better than nothing) and a guy ranted at him that they don't work and gave him a stare.

Honestly, unless he has a medical condition, wearing a mask out in public may be more trouble than it's worth. He'll only attract the types who are looking to pick a fight.

Bizarrely - no 'pasta' left - but plenty of spaghetti.

Amateurs! Don't they know spaghetti is the best pasta for stockpiling? Grin

Conny848 · 15/03/2020 15:42

My nan hated the war and the post war era. I didn't suggest that she didn't. She was hungry, cold and scared for years. What I said was that despite the hellish situation, MOST people were kind to each other and shared when they could. Maybe she lived in area full of particularly nice people. I don't know. But that was her experience. She's not looking back through rose tinted glasses, she's been left with awful scars, just like everyone else. My point was that having experienced and lived through both, she feels that people were less greedy and selfish then.

Luckystar777 · 15/03/2020 15:43

That's why the army should be out patrolling just now.

Rollypollyrosie · 15/03/2020 15:43

Mars bars ice creams are well known for being a panacea in an apocalypse situation. Wise thinking @doilooklikeatourist

wheresmymojo · 15/03/2020 15:46

I don't know if it helps to balance it out a bit but the community spirit is strong where I live.

Someone has set up a special FB group for those self isolating or ill and those that can give assistance to them.

I have posted leaflets through the doors of the retirement houses on the estate next to us with my number offering help if any of them need anything (food making if ill, dog walking, grocery shopping) and said same for any frontline services workers on FB. Another 15 or so people in the houses on our estate also added to my thread to offer.

Devlesko · 15/03/2020 15:48

This is the present, hopefully when we have to cope with what other countries are, and when it all quietens down, maybe humanity will have found some humility.

Soubriquet · 15/03/2020 15:48

I work as an online shopper but I’ve been in isolation since Saturday.

I last worked Friday, and there was no toilet roll or pasta then. Hand wash was extremely low

According to my colleagues, some customers are really kicking up because they can’t get hold of items. We aren’t in charge of ordering stock! We can’t help you.

I’m hoping by the time I go back, everything has calmed down

mrsBtheparker · 15/03/2020 15:49

Well, this the result of forty-odd years of Thatcherism. We’ve been told to consume, and to look after Number One. Now the chickens are coming home to roost.

What an idiot!! What about the Oliver Cromwell effect, the William the Conquerer stereotype? Really scraping the bottom of the left's barrel!

Devlesko · 15/03/2020 15:50

conny

She was right. We live in such an entitled world, and I don't just mean the younger generations.

sunglasses123 · 15/03/2020 15:51

Open early, help them with shopping? The supermarket workers are flat out on mimium wage stocking the shelves. They really wont have time to do this.

There was another thread where someone asked why older people shop on a Saturday when its really busy, stressful, etc and were told by others that they could shop when they liked. Then I think - the thread was taken down!

I would stay right away from Asda and Lidl. I think the customers go into a frenzy. Passed the one at High Wycombe earlier and it was rammed. Its funny toilet rolls in short supply and everyone claiming they are just about to run out as they scan through 4 packs for themselves!

I saw a couple of pictures in the papers of some women with a trolley piled high with them. They really are shameless!

Do people really think that the poor checkout assistant is deliberately being difficult when they say some things are in short supply. I heard one women the other day telling the supervisor in a large supermarket saying that they should ID people - FOR TOILET ROLLS!!

2beautifulbabs · 15/03/2020 15:52

Yep sadly mankind has proven time and time again how selfish we are in crisis.

You only have to read in the news about disasters going on people hunting and killing animals for fun.

People stabbing one another shooting one another it's been going on for decades

It's a known fact humans are selfish majority of the population are it's sadly a small minority that are still caring

heath48 · 15/03/2020 16:00

Was in Sainsbury’s yesterday,a bit busier than normal, plenty of kitchen roll and tissues, everyone was polite.Havent witnessed any bad behaviour and I shop in what could be considered a “rough” town.

Self scanned as usual,I was the only one doing it.

I suppose we only hear about the dramarama on here, not the millions of people who do behave well.

dementedma · 15/03/2020 16:01

Wow, none of this behaviour round here so far..or not that we have encountered.
Those saying bring in the army...( wonder if any of them are the MNers who usually refer to soldiers as hired killers, murderous thugs etc), anyway have you thought about the close proximity the Armed Forces live and work in? Shared dormitories, those on board ships and submarines? How fast is CV going to go through a barracks or warship causing all there to self isolate?
