We have one confirmed case on our island, but we only have 7 icu beds. I am absolutely terrified as small DD has health issues currently and I’m scared to leave the house.

I would assume that a seriously ill child would be airlifted to the nearest mainland paediatric unit so please don't imagine the worst, it is extremely unlikely. Perhaps you could find out which unit that would be if it helps you feel a little more prepared.

Of course you need to take precautions but do remember that in taking precautions, you are taking control. Make a plan. Think about how to feed yourselves in the event of lockdown. Have you got enough of your essentials? If any of you needs regular prescriptions, arrange to have them delivered. I have no doubt you are scrupulous about hygiene yourself, make sure everyone who visits the house is too. Delegate and minimise wherever possible. Write it all down, make a board, anything which makes your plans concrete. Once you've done all that, stick two fingers up to coronavirus and tell it to fuck right off.

Personally I'd go get what I needed from the shops to last a couple of weeks then go into lockdown.

fairydustandpixies · 15/03/2020 04:44

If you're on the island I think you are it's only six beds and a second case has just been confirmed. Sorry to bring bad news.

PlanDeRaccordement · 15/03/2020 04:48

There will be shortages of ICU beds in the U.K. you have a lower bed to population ratio than all the EU. My brothers county (he lives in UK) has forty beds for over half a million people.

Your bed to person ratio may actually be better depending on how many live on your island.

fairydustandpixies · 15/03/2020 09:13

There's a population of around 141k on the island I think we're talking about.

DreamALittleDreamofMe · 15/03/2020 09:22

We have 63k on our island.

DreamALittleDreamofMe · 15/03/2020 09:25

So that makes 1 ICU bed per 9k.

Don’t overpanic. Children seem to be less impacted and certainly with SARS (a related serious virus) they don’t develop the same serious symptoms that adults do. All sorts of theories why but they aren’t relevant. So far, globally, no children under nine years have suffered critical or fatal disease.
It’s scary but knowledge is reassuring. Most people don’t die - even in elderly frail populations.

OP, different island then! Sounds like you are far better equipped so that's good! Hope that gives you some comfort, these are strange times indeed...

Well it depends if you live on guernsey or the Cayman Islands. Struggling to have much sympathy if it's Cayman Grin

fairydustandpixies · 15/03/2020 12:06

Not Cayman here!!! 🤣🤣

DreamALittleDreamofMe · 15/03/2020 15:50

It’s guernsey ☺️
