to ask if your kids are going to school on Monday?

I’ve been quite happy to follow government recommendations so far, but today my DD couldn’t go swimming with her mates as their parents are keeping them home. I made a comment that they’ll be surrounded by kids at school on Monday anyway and she said that their parents will be keeping them off now as they disagree that schools should be open. I was going to keep sending mine as long as they’re open, I’ve got three healthy teen kids but also a preschool child with asthma who ends up in hospital fairly regularly just from basic colds and am second guessing myself now?

To my children? Of course it will. Silly sausage.

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 21:57

Nope. The minute they go outside and mix with others they will catch it. Either next week or in 6 months.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 15/03/2020 22:00

Oh FgS 😂😂😂

The psychological effect of isolation and no education shouldn't be underestimated.

How on Earth is this anything to do with the risk of them catching the virus?? do you not remember the conversation you’re having?

MasterMargarita · 15/03/2020 22:02

@Tonyaster the whole point of not going to school is that they don't go outside and mix with others to avoid the spread. Are you on the same thread as us or are you having this conversation with yourself?

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 22:04

How long are you going to keep them at home? Forever?

Schools almost certainly won't be going back after Easter. Let your kids enjoy the last couple of weeks with their mates. They will catch the virus at some point unless you keep them in the attic for the next five years.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 15/03/2020 22:06

How long are you going to keep them at home? Forever?

Yes, obviously. Hmm Grin

catspyjamas123 · 15/03/2020 22:09

No, if we isolate the population as much as possible we can stop it spreading. That’s happened in China. They took severe measures and although there are cases they are NOT all getting it!

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 15/03/2020 22:15

^^this. It’s the isolation that is key. Stupid people saying “ah sure we’ll all get it eventually- go about your business” are what will prevent us having the same outcomes as China.

sassbott · 15/03/2020 22:15

Yes. And they’ll keep going until such time that either

  1. anyone in the family gets symptoms and causes us to self isolate
  2. the school closes
  3. easter holidays start
Isadora2007 · 15/03/2020 22:16

Yes mine will be at school as long as the schools are open. Unless they’re unwell- as usual.

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 22:17

So what's going to happen in China when they stop the lockdown?

Leithwalk · 15/03/2020 22:17

No, mine are staying at home. Not risking it - hygiene never great in schools at the best of times.

Loads of parents kept their children at home on Friday, once BJ had said schools needed to stay open.Time to make our own decisions for our own families and their safety.

Unfortunately I work with schools and will need to be there! However good hygiene at home is much easier to enforce.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 15/03/2020 22:21

Mine are going to college

But i am tempted to allow dd (18) to stay home the week before easter and if she stays home ds2 probably will as well

Unless i can convince him that dds college is shut and its tough if his isn’t...but he’s not as daft as he looks

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 15/03/2020 22:23

So what's going to happen in China when they stop the lockdown?

I’ll be watching very carefully to see. Won’t you?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 15/03/2020 22:23

No, I'm keeping mine at home.

If and when the govt publish their workings of how exactly the 'herd immunity' idea makes proper sense, then I will send them to school. Otherwise, until we know more, I'm practising social distancing as much as I possibly can.

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 22:29

Our local hospital have banned children visiting.
But they can o to school and go home to parents who are vulnerable.

LittleRen · 15/03/2020 22:30

How are you all avoiding the fines/poor attendance? I really want to keep mine off but not sure best way to do it.

Evenquieterlife33 · 15/03/2020 22:30

We’ve decided to keep them home. Feels strange. We don’t want to risk it, we feel like it’s a risk to send them.

Frazzled2207 · 15/03/2020 22:31

don't judge anyone for keeping them off but mine are going in.

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 22:31

Also there are lots of home education resources out there you can use.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 15/03/2020 22:33

I'm in Scotland, there's no such thing as fines for not attending school. And the school have been very helpful and understanding.

MoonBlood · 15/03/2020 22:35

Earlier in the thread it was mentioned that some schools are using the code for snow day when pupils are self-isolating so that attendance isn’t affected.

NellyGrace · 15/03/2020 22:38

I've got one with underlying health conditions.

I agree that as soon as she goes back to school or elsewhere she'll catch it. BUT - I'm hoping that by the time we emerge - hospitals will be under less pressure and they may have found some way/some sort of drug to deal with this.

NellyGrace · 15/03/2020 22:43

Teachers have said that school will not be educating the kids - soon. Not well anyway. It will be childcare. That's fine if you need the childcare but we don't. Mine will be better educated at home.

Already 2 teachers are off in DD's school and those are just the ones she knows about.

Guidance to LA maintained schools ( maybe not academies) has changed and includes absence codes/policy regarding CV
Ask for the policy from your school, fines in my LA are not going to happen if the absence ( a cough) is CV related.
