Over 70s to self isolate

Over 70s are going to be told to self isolate even if they don’t have the virus and this will be coming in 5-20 days and last 4 months

I think Borris picked the over 70's because it'll be less work for the army to wrestle old people to the ground etc when martial law is instituted

definitelygc · 15/03/2020 21:19

I also had to have some strong words with the parents today who were saying things like "oh well, we've had a good innings". That's 100% not how people feel when they can't breathe and there are no ventilators left in the hospital.

I also had to explain to them that self-isolating is pointless if they're going to carry on looking after my family member's kids after school everyday. They seemed to think self-isolating means "don't take public transport" or "go to Sainsbury's when it's a bit quieter".

My Mum hadn't heard the news, when I told her earlier she went silent on me.

Since then, have heard there's a fair chance I've been close to someone with coronavirus (all I know is someone in working environment has it and I doubt we'll be closing). No way I can help my Mum in next 14 days. She doesn't have anyone else. Hope government have back up plans to support elderly!

Kayagh · 15/03/2020 21:50

Everyone has a part to play so why the hell shouldn’t the ones most at risk play their or would they rather screw the young ones up that have exams and potentially ruin their futures 14 year old can’t do exams and follow the dreams they got 60 years ahead of them to hard this virus a 70 year old who has lived their life hasn’t got that burden sick it up buttercups and play your part in making this right end of

Tiggurr · 15/03/2020 21:53

What about households with more than one generation living in the same property?

definitelygc · 15/03/2020 22:01

From what I've read the "isolation" applies to the whole household if there's someone over 70. I guess we'll hear more over the next couple of weeks.

tryingtoprep · 15/03/2020 22:02

@Tiggurr That's why this supposed plan is a load of shit. Pretend action from the government. We need to do what all the other countries are doing. Lockdowns so that everyone is protected. Many higher risk people don't live alone, and of course many higher risk people are well under 70. Loads of young people have underlying conditions. Everywhere else is doing proper lockdowns. You go out for essential shops or to help elderly or disabled relatives but schools, offices, non essential shops, bars, restaurants, etc are shut. In a month or so we'll be the country with the highest death rate because we're not taking the same measures. We won't be travelling because WE will be the high risk country that everywhere else will ban flights from.

@Kayagh You do realise that many of the higher risk people are young? They need to work, they're parents of young children. Telling only over 70s to stay at home is a pretence at doing something. It won't protect a large proportion of those most vulnerable.

Dowser · 15/03/2020 22:13

WeVe had our first day of lockdown.
Everything closed apart from supermarkets and pharmacies.
Just weird..a ghost town
There was a few people walking along the prom . A few people walking dogs.
Spoke to a lady who is 74. Fit as a lop and cares for her big 50 year old son who is disabled from birth.
I told her Boris is asking people over 70 to self isolate.
Who is going to look after him then she said?
Exactly.

Grufallosfriends · 15/03/2020 22:37

To protect the oldest in your household it's probably best if everyone is careful and isolates themselves as much as possible to avoid infecting the vulnerable ones in your family. Common sense really.

Itwasntme1 · 15/03/2020 22:38

Dowser where are you?

Rachel709 · 15/03/2020 23:28

Just saw a government spokesperson saying they require an army of volunteers to look after these old people at home.

UYScuti · 15/03/2020 23:56

Volunteers??
yeah we're gonna volunteer while we're busy caring for our own sick/children/ pets /elderly and worrying about how to pay the bills/run our businesses/ work from home etc etc 😳🙄

StoneofDestiny · 16/03/2020 00:01

Boris has had to pick an age .......because in general, most over 70s are not working

Exactly - a financial/economic reason, not a medical reason.

I've fit and healthy family extended members over 70 who still work - if they continue to work they are not being selfish.

I've younger and more vulnerable members of the family who are far more at risk if they come into contact with the virus.

StoneofDestiny · 16/03/2020 00:02

and what age group do many volunteers come from - yep 65 plus!

.

alloutoffucks · 16/03/2020 00:04

WHO advise self isolation of some kind from age 60. That is not here because they are still working.

Megan2018 · 16/03/2020 00:06

My Dad is 70 and still has a job (through choice, he doesn’t need the £). Why does everyone think 70+=incapable, frail old fart.

Lovely13 · 16/03/2020 00:19

Loneliness is as big a killer as any other illness. Boris has an older dad. He’s not so young himself. Needs to sort this crazy Dominic Cummings plan better for a very serious situation.

alloutoffucks · 16/03/2020 00:57

Loneliness is as dangerous as smoking.
There are other illnesses that are far bigger killers. Look up mortality rates and causes.

HeIenaDove · 16/03/2020 01:06

Whats the betting they also expect them to be women

Dr John Ashton alluded to this on the Victoria Derbyshire show last week.

HeIenaDove · 16/03/2020 01:25

My niece is 25. She works with SEN children. She lives with her grandparents who are in their 80s

Wont be easy for them to find someone else.

planningaheadtoday · 16/03/2020 03:12

I visited my parents tonight to reassure them I would be doing their shopping and delivering it.
They are both heading towards 80.

My mother has promised her last big shop to Sainsbury's was last Friday and that she would shut the gate and concentrate on her gardening.

In the next breath she told me she'd had a sleep that afternoon to get her energy up for her busy week ahead! She's still planning on going out and about to various busy meetings, but said it was alright as they bump elbows and don't kiss on the cheek anymore Hmm

My father then told me that one of the members at his club was in hospital with suspected coronavirus. But he was taking extra precautions with hand washing so he would be alright to carry on going.

Aaaagggghh

They are just not going to self isolate, at all.

My parents in law, also heading towards 80 both said if it's their time then that's fine. Neither are stopping any activity at all.

I'm now worrying about an extra 4 people who won't help themselves and seem to be under the misapprehension that the NHS will be there if they get ill.

Graciebobcat · 16/03/2020 04:35

That would apply to us, but it isn't official advice yet, and there is nothing about it on the government website.

AGoodPodcastAndANiceCupOfTea · 16/03/2020 05:44

@LizzieSiddal From our phones!!! The government here in Slovakia have said that they will do random spot checks and will be checking phone data amongst other things. So far this weekend they have caught 205 people who should be self-isolating and haven't and they are being fined 1605€ - the current maximum. We can also be jailed for up to 8 years if we refuse to comply. If you'd told me 3 months ago that I'd be teaching from home and wouldn't be allowed out of my flat at all under any circumstances for the next 8 days and that even after that there is no end in sight and we shouldn't leave I wouldn't believe you. Day to day normal is very odd right now!

Great, they’ve had their life but what about those younger with underlying health conditions?
