would you:

meet a group of friends in a cafe
go to the hairdresser
go to dentist for check up
go to clubs and classes

In other words are you cancelling routine social stuff?

I am concerned as have two extended family members who may need me to support them.

Government advice is being questioned by almost 300 university scientists today in a letter.
They recommend social distancing now, not sometime later when it's too late.

*I am quite surprised at the number of people carrying on as normal in crowded places.

I am more concerned about my inability to care for or risk of infecting vulnerable family members.*

Nice bit of judgement there Hmm

jopjop · 14/03/2020 21:56

Most people I know are carrying on as normal but with extra hand washing. It's here, people can't put their life on hold, if things are really kicking off maybe I will not see my parents for a bit.

JellyfishandShells · 14/03/2020 21:57

I’m still doing all of the things listed in the original post . Thought the gym class might have been a bit thin but was packed.

MaomiMak · 14/03/2020 21:58

I'm doing everything as normal

Sick of people acting as if this is the apocalypse

hurryupautumn · 14/03/2020 22:02

I went to hairdresser this morning.

Jamieson90 · 14/03/2020 22:05

I'm still working as I work in a school and there is no option to WFH.

I've stopped meeting friends and family though and the Beaver Scout Group I currently volunteer as a leader at is in discussions about locking down. Probably when schools close or earlier depending on attendance.

Literally other than work and shopping I'm keeping isolated in my flat by myself.

Will probably still get it though as schools are a major hot spot for disease transmission and I think it is criminally negligent that we haven't been closed yet.

Popl · 14/03/2020 22:06

I have to carry on. I'm doing all of the above

Confusedasusual78 · 14/03/2020 22:07

I would’ve normally been possibly at the beach today, at the marina getting ice creams with my baby girl, at the markets, beach cafe, shopping centre etc. I stayed in all day and have done the last three days. Dp went early in the morning to stock up on supplies (need to be responsible with a 19 month old) he came straight home, showered and washed his clothes.
The beaches have closed here, restaurants, bars, shopping centres, supermarkets are guarded by security who let in three at a time.
My dd asked to go out on her trike today, we couldn’t, it’s the most bizarre, unsettling time.

RoseDog · 14/03/2020 22:10

We (me, dp, dd, ds) were at the Dentist on Wednesday, it's in a dr surgery, I stood outside until it was our appointment, it's usually really busy but it wasn't, there was bottles of hand sanitiser out next to the touch screen sign in thing, we don't use that for the dentist but since then 2 dr surgeries have closed as they have had linked cases.

BluePheasant · 14/03/2020 22:11

I'm front line NHS and DH is a teacher. We have one child in school and another in nursery. Seriously, what would be the point in cancelling something like meeting a friend at a cafe Confused

Haworthia · 14/03/2020 22:17

Stayed in today. My 8yo was annoyed to not go to her swimming class but my gut told me not to spent time in a packed changing room and then a packed viewing room. It wasn’t necessary that we go so we didn’t.

neversleepagain · 14/03/2020 22:21

We're carrying on as normal. DC had their sports club this morning, then we went for brunch and to their music lesson. If they're going to school we'll carry on as normal.

ScarlettBlaize · 14/03/2020 22:23

@LaurieFairyCake

I'm most pissed off that I'm paying £180 a month (tied into contract) for mine and Dh's gym - I don't feel safe to go to that humid atmosphere

I want to cancel but can't.

Why would anyone pay that much? I pay 25 a month and I'm still going daily, and I could cancel any time without penalty

totorosfluffytummy · 14/03/2020 22:29

I hope everyone carrying on as normal is right.
Personally

LaurieFairyCake · 14/03/2020 22:30

Scarlet

It's David Lloyd and that's the cost (London). One year contract.

MaomiMak · 14/03/2020 22:31

I travel on the tube in London. Again why would I not go to a cafe or hairdresser.

Think I'll somehow be exposed to worse?

totorosfluffytummy · 14/03/2020 22:31

Personally I have one child and one parent who are high risk making us need to socially distant ourselves
Yet one Dd who has multiple Hospital appointments that are medium to high grade importance so we have to continue with those for the next couple of weeks if possible

MaomiMak · 14/03/2020 22:32

I pay £70 for a London David lloyd

TabbyStar · 14/03/2020 22:34

I pay £100 for a not London David Lloyd! I haven't been going but think I might go for an outdoor swim. Not keen to use the gym equipment though.

jopjop · 14/03/2020 22:35

Tbh I resent the idea that not isolating yourself is somehow "immoral".

totorosfluffytummy · 14/03/2020 22:36

People fussing over football, gym, social events etc - for goodness sake have a look at Italy to ground yourselves!
Avoid contact wherever possible.
Those who have important hospital appointments are those that should be discussing whether to attend or not, not kids' parties and school for under 14s!

AFireInJuly · 14/03/2020 22:39

I am carrying on as normal, but just being more careful with touching things/washing hands regularly. I went to the gym today and it was pretty quiet. I wiped down each machine with cleaning spray after I'd finished with it, didn't touch my face etc. Noticed others doing the same, so I think people are being cautious when out and about.

I work in central London and take the tube every day, so as others have said it seems pointless to cut back on things that are probably lower risk than that.

I'm working on the basis that things are probably going to get more restrictive, so making the most of being able to do things now (while being sensible). My H and I have decided that if one of us gets symptoms we will both self-isolate together as we only have one bedroom/bathroom the other one will almost certainly catch it. We are both low risk though, so there doesn't seem to be much point in worrying.

BiarritzCrackers · 14/03/2020 22:42

I went to a college class last week, and I guess we will be expect to go this week unless we hear otherwise in the next couple of days, but I wouldn't do any of the others right now. The picture has changed quite dramatically in the last 48 hours.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 14/03/2020 22:43

Live in Ireland - work in a creche which closed as per Government orders on Friday at 6pm
Only going out in public when necessary to shop or chemist

Many restaurants and pubs have announced that they are closing today on their own initiative.

People are taking things very seriously here and there is a sense of goodwill and community spirit which is comforting to see.
