Genuinely worried about starvation? Can anyone clarify?

I'm not going out and buying things as I don't want to be part of the problem. But I'm beginning to worry? I can't order online as there's no slots for weeks, I can go into store as usual but beginning to become more hesitant about doing so with my 8 month old, we've already struggled to find his formula. I'm at a loss what to do without rushing round a few local shops and stock piling myself but as I've said then I'm part of the problem. If a total lock down happens now we have enough food for a couple of days and that's it. What do we do then? Starve?

Supply chains were fine during the Chinese lockdown. People will be allowed out to shop, and delivery capability will be increased.

People will also calm down when it sinks in that this is going to go on for most of the rest of 2020. This is the new normal.

Most adults can survive at least 40 days without food (though you of course wouldn't feel good). Children need to be prioritized of course.

But I think don't worry as no signs of any food restrictions in countries more affected than us eg Italy

Crackerofdoom · 14/03/2020 19:48

Bear in mind that a large number of people have just done enough shopping to last them for months. They won't need to keep going to the shops. Things will be replenished and the panic will die down.

In the meantime, we will get to sample the packet of mystery meat most of us have lurking in the back of the freezer...

HoneysuckIejasmine · 14/03/2020 19:49

Have you got any click and collect slots available?

MyDcAreMarvel · 14/03/2020 19:53

Try Morrisons they seem to have more slots available.

AudacityOfHope · 14/03/2020 19:55

There's no point in being too paranoid to spend 15 minutes in a shop. Just go and get some stuff in. There is literally no need to be worried you'll starve to death when you are well enough to go outside, and are capable of washing your hands when you get home.

Griefmonster · 14/03/2020 19:55

As others have said, even in countries where they have locked down, food shops have still been open. Absolute priority for contingency planning is to keep food and medical supply chains going. You will not starve. If you are worried about getting to shops, ask for help. I am hopeful this will bring out the best in people as well as the selfishness. I know it is scary and you have a young child. If you are worried about getting formula, can you contact your health visitor?

AudacityOfHope · 14/03/2020 20:00

Health visitors are not a formula delivery service for healthy people Confused

Hi OP, I've been to the supermarket for the first time in three weeks. It was all okay. People are still shopping. As PP have said, asong as you wash your hands on return, you'll be fine.

Fralla · 14/03/2020 20:07

I had a conversation with a colleague the other day. He’s from another European country and made the point that all “English people” food was sold out in the supermarket, ie. ready made frozen stuff like pizzas etc.

It made me think so I’ve now stocked up on dry yeast, flour, lentils and yellow split peas. If worst come to worst I’ll still be able to feed my family with soup and bread.

BillywilliamV · 14/03/2020 20:07

Only really stocked up on cat food, not getting stuck in house with hungry cats.

Donkeytail · 14/03/2020 20:09

Like another poster said even in lockdown shops remain open. What's the point in locking people down to try and stop the pandemic only to starve people?

Saisong · 14/03/2020 20:10

Round here several Facebook groups have already been set up with volunteers willing to do shopping runs or provide essential supplies to the vulnerable and isolated. Might be worth checking if there is anything similar. We're all going to have to pull together to get through this.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 14/03/2020 20:10

Theres slots only Sainsbury’s next werk

cherryblossomgin · 14/03/2020 20:11

Amazon pantry might be a good place to try. Also try to be logical, how many cases are in your area. Also you could stock pile some rice, beans and anything thing else you need to cope for a couple of weeks. But you will probably be fine.

Likethebattle · 14/03/2020 20:11

I proper for brexit so have tons, packets and medicine already. When is this going to end though?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 14/03/2020 20:11

In English: There are slots in Sainsburys next week

NormaLouiseBates · 14/03/2020 20:11

Don't blame you BillywilliamV they'd probably eat you!

Pteuropa · 14/03/2020 20:12

Good grief!! No one is going to starve to death! People will still be able to buy food, just do your usual shop and buy a few extra staples, your DC will be fine to go with you.

halcyondays · 14/03/2020 20:13

Go and get enough supplies for a couple of weeks. This is sensible.

nicky2512 · 14/03/2020 20:15

I won’t have any money for food if we can’t work!! DH is a mechanic. I’ve no idea if he can still work in lockdown situation. If not, sick pay wouldn’t even touch the sides. I’m so worried about it all I’m making myself feel ill.

halcyondays · 14/03/2020 20:15

And shops will still be open even in a lockdown. They aren’t going to starve people.

Nameisthegame · 14/03/2020 20:15

Can’t you buy formula at a pharmacy? I’m in a lockdown in Spain , plenty of food and supplies no one is really going without don’t worry.

littlemissmuffins · 14/03/2020 20:16

So long as you are not elderly or infirm and also isolated from much outside contact, you will be fine. Supply chains will likely be ok. And even in the very unlikely event they are not, the government will ensure food is supplied to homes. It's too bad press for them to have lots of people starving to death. Unless it's a few thousand poor or disabled people spread out over eight years.

Don't worry too much about food. Enough for 2 weeks is fine.

R2221 · 14/03/2020 20:17

What were you trying to prove by not stocking up? Even if you didn’t want to be a part of the problem, it’s strange to not have food for at least a week under present circumstances (if you can afford to buy)! When my kids were young, I usually had a few weeks worth formula at home always.

I suggest you go as soon as the shops open tomorrow and get something.
