Genuinely worried about starvation? Can anyone clarify?

I'm not going out and buying things as I don't want to be part of the problem. But I'm beginning to worry? I can't order online as there's no slots for weeks, I can go into store as usual but beginning to become more hesitant about doing so with my 8 month old, we've already struggled to find his formula. I'm at a loss what to do without rushing round a few local shops and stock piling myself but as I've said then I'm part of the problem. If a total lock down happens now we have enough food for a couple of days and that's it. What do we do then? Starve?

You should have enough food in to last seven days in case you have to self isolate. If you develop a cough or fever you can’t go to the shops then so just get enough to cover you in that situation. That’s not ‘being part of the problem’; it’s being sensible.

NoHunGosh · 14/03/2020 20:21

I'm in Italy. Absolutely no shortages other than hand gel. People may have panicked a bit the first day or two but supermarkets are open and have eveything.

thunderthighsohwoe · 14/03/2020 20:23

Seriously, go and get a lot of formula. Babies must be fed.

You’ll be fine, there will be some kind of food available.

TotesGodsWill · 14/03/2020 20:24

Even in China, which has had the strictest lockdown we’ve seen over this, one person per household was allowed out to get food every three days. It did make me wonder about the people working to keep those shops open and food chains working.

Given the government have so far leaned very much towards business as usual, I can’t imagine them imposing the kind of quarantine where people are left to starve to death.

TheWordmeister · 14/03/2020 20:25

Good grief!! No one is going to starve to death! People will still be able to buy food, just do your usual shop and buy a few extra staples, your DC will be fine to go with you.

This.

My Italian friend has been on lockdown for 3 weeks. There is no shortage of food.

Liveinside · 14/03/2020 20:27

You should have enough to last you a week or two though. What if you woke up with a cough and temp and had to self isolate?

That’s not stockpiling it’s being sensible

OlaEliza · 14/03/2020 20:29

We are on lockdown but are allowed out to go to the supermarket (and doctors/hospital, chemists and work if you work in one of these or their supply chain).

I'm hoping they start rationing what people can buy because today and yesterday, the shelves were bare.

Herpesfreesince03 · 14/03/2020 20:30

I can’t get over this attitude over people refusing to stock up. You’ve got a baby and you’re literally worried about starving, but won’t go out and buy food in case in causes others to go without? I’m in a major city in the uk and the supermarkets started emptying 2 weeks ago. Last week I went out and bought 2/3 months worth of medications and cleaning supplies, and about 5 weeks worth of food. As of today my supermarkets have not only been out of stock of toilet paper/dried/frozen goods for a week, but they’re not completely out of fresh food including fruit, fresh meat and eggs. This is the first time I’ve admitted online to be a ‘panic’ buyer because we’re all ‘selfish’, expect my panic buying was motivated by not wanted my 3 children to go without food and basic hygiene products, I wouldn’t have bothered if it were just myself. How tf is that selfish? I’m probably gonna get torn apart from this but I don’t care tbh, my kids won’t be going without

OlaEliza · 14/03/2020 20:31

They say they have enough to restock for each morning though, at the moment, but people are just taking everything like locusts.

Herpesfreesince03 · 14/03/2020 20:32

They’re completely, not they’re not

madcatladyforever · 14/03/2020 20:32

You can shop for food on Amazon I think. They are still delivering daily but I don't know how long for. All of us neighbours agreed two weeks ago that if one of us can't go out the others will do the shopping and leave it on the doorstep.

Thefaceofboe · 14/03/2020 20:32

Even in lockdown, you can go to the supermarket. Supermarkets in Italy are still open.

Peanutbutteryogurt · 14/03/2020 20:33

At least stock up on baby milk. I get you don't want to be part of the problem, but that's not really your baby's issue is it?

mnthrowaway202020 · 14/03/2020 20:34

Nothing’s stopping you from going to the shops and getting enough bits to last 2 weeks (frozen, long life etc). You aren’t “contributing to the problem” - the problem are the people overdoing it and eg taking a whole crate of something or like 5 massive packs of loo roll etc.

mnthrowaway202020 · 14/03/2020 20:36

No one wants to see you/your family starve.

PieceOfMaria · 14/03/2020 20:39

Just go to the shop for Gods sake. Unless you are in one of the high risk groups there is no need to put yourself in total isolation. Just use some common sense, keep your distance from others and only go into crowded public spaces when it’s actually necessary. Get your partner to have the baby so you can whizz around the supermarket really early one morning when fewest people are likely to be there.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 20:39

Just get two weeks worth.

Jobseeker19 · 14/03/2020 20:41

Hi I've seen ubereats have corner shop deliveries. If that helps anyone.

Genuinely worried about starvation? Can anyone clarify?
notthemum · 14/03/2020 20:41

Don't know if any use to anyone but I have a brand new unopened tub of Aptimil baby follow on milk.
Nothing odd. Was childminding and child moved on before the tub was opened. Expiry date is Oct/Nov this year.

practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 14/03/2020 20:43

Tesco had plenty of slots for end of coming week. Some stuff not available but could order a fair amount of our usual shop.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/03/2020 20:43

Only really stocked up on cat food, not getting stuck in house with hungry cats.

Same here. Cat and dog food - we can eat lentils and rice. We might have a boring diet, and probably not a very balanced one, but unless we can't get anything fresh for months we are unlikely to starve or develop scurvy.

BarcelonaFreddie · 14/03/2020 20:44

Iceland had lots of slots for Tuesday, Wednesday and rest of week.

Emmapeeler1 · 14/03/2020 20:44

Keep a fair amount of formula in, regardless of the virus.

I have not panic bought anything but we managed to get a normal shop plus a few extra staples today by going to a few different shops.

JinglingHellsBells · 14/03/2020 20:48

there are online slots available with most supermarkets with a week or so wait.

or leave your baby with a friend or relative and go to the shops?

Ludways · 14/03/2020 20:55

I was in Sainsbury's today, there's plenty of good still on the shelves apart from pasta. The woman on the tills said they were being replenished this week with a massive delivery. No idea why people need to shop so much.
