Genuinely worried about starvation? Can anyone clarify?

I'm not going out and buying things as I don't want to be part of the problem. But I'm beginning to worry? I can't order online as there's no slots for weeks, I can go into store as usual but beginning to become more hesitant about doing so with my 8 month old, we've already struggled to find his formula. I'm at a loss what to do without rushing round a few local shops and stock piling myself but as I've said then I'm part of the problem. If a total lock down happens now we have enough food for a couple of days and that's it. What do we do then? Starve?

I'm Polish I still remember communism in Poland the toilet paper is the less important. We use to do it with news paper or leaf. I have lots of cotton clothes can be washed at 90C and reused.
About food immunity is the most important that can be a problem. So I'm only worry about fresh food I can't plant in the garden because I haven't got one.
Disapaointed tho that my biod d 5L hand wash is not on ebay or the price is too high
I'm planning to do some shopping on wednesday in the morning but mostly dry things like flour, pasta, rice for kids if I need to cook or bake . Also lots of ginger, garlic lemon and honey to bust immune system.

Glad to see so many people have reasonably well stocked supermarkets nearby. Dh popped to our local superstore for a loaf of bread) a couple of hours ago - it's actually our closest food shop - and the place looked as tough it had been ransacked. Four loaves of bread on the shelf ( he only bought one), whole aisles completely empty. Fresh fruit and veg virtually empty, no cleaning products, toilet roll, kitchen roll etc.
DS, who works in one of the largest distribution centres for the sake supermarket chain has said that they are struggling to supply stores. Currently, only around 50%of the products stores are ordering are actually available. 24 hour stores are closing overnight to allow stores to restock the shelves with whatever the warehouses can supply. Trouble is, manufacturers probably cannot increase production as many work 24/7 anyway so there is no capacity to increase hours etc.
It's one thing to buy a few extra bits and pieces to see you through for a week or so, quite another for people to basically ransack the shelves without any thought for anyone else. If everyone only bought their usual shopping, plus one or two extra items, then people like dt wouldn't be worrying about getting hold of nappies for his ban, And my mum and MIL, both in their 80's, wouldn't be worrying about getting a few basics such as bread, milk etc. And as much as do and I will help out where we can, if the products are not on the shelves, then we cannot help.

Theres loads of food where we are Only certain things are out of stock, but if you really are starving you're hardly going to say 'I'm not touching those own brand beans'? Youd eat them and try some other stuff that's in stock. I did the same as PP. Bought lentils, rice and wholemesl flour. If needs be, we can easily live off those for a few weeks. Boring but no ones going to starve to death! The problem with reports of panic buying loo roll is everyone then thinks they need to panic buy loo roll!

There are no Sainsbury's delivery slots in my area listed, all been taken up to and including April 4th

Justaboy · 14/03/2020 23:09

Few 80+ people in tears a theyve been all over trying to find basics like soap.

This is what really appals me. The bloody thin veneer of civlisation.

If BoJo had any sense he'd implement a rationing system so that each customer with a trolley could only have a certain amount of designated items.

Anyone taking more than what they are permitted will be escorted from the store and if they play up will be arrested!

There!, thats what we do need if we cannot behave!

Try Amazon pantry if you can't get what you need in the supermarket. Or smaller corner shops.

oneoffname · 14/03/2020 23:47

That's all very well *Bees, but in this area the supermarkets have driven corner shops out of existence. Our nearest food shop is the massive supermarket. The nearest town has another, rival supermarket, about a billion coffee ships and gyms, but not a single bakers, butcher, greengrocers. There are beauty salons and charity shops, but unless you want to, or can afford to live on takeaways, you have no choice other than the supermarket.

@olawisk People who survive on benefits and foodbanks. People who live from one paycheck to the next. People who live in small or temporary accommodation. People without transport to drive a boot full of shopping home?

Surely its not that hard to imagine that not everyone has a big stash of tins and rice at home and needs to shop as and when food is required?

Tulipstulips · 15/03/2020 09:07

It’s not selfish stockpiling to have a week or a fortnight’s worth of food in - if you get moderately ill, you won’t want to go shopping. It’s the people buying 50 rolls of loo roll or 10 packs of pasta who are panic-buying.
