Anyone been confirmed with Coronavirus? What’s it feel like?

People at my work have had fever and cough and continued to come in. One lady had been to Italy in February, was unwell on her return and continued to be so until last week she was put on steroids for a chest infection. Other people have had fever and cough, one unwell enough to be off all week despite not wanting to be.
Other people coming in with fever and cough and coughing all over the office
How do we know when it is just a virus other than Coronavirus?
I’ve felt mildly unwell this week. I just heard someone on the radio saying she has been confirmed as having it but doesn’t feel that bad?

@user1480880826: she's a friend. She sent her kids to her parents and has been getting food delivered to her door and doesn't approach anyone. She's mainly been in bed so is just looking after herself /getting minimal assistance from family

Love2cycle · 14/03/2020 19:32

Ah right thanks. So there could be an antibiotic resistance issue problem tied into it? This has been on cards for a few years now.

JunkshopLil · 14/03/2020 19:33

My daughter developed a nasty cough out of nowhere on Thursday. She works in a secondary school and has been told to self isolate for 7 days. She's still coughing and has a headache and no appetite but is generally ok and of course, we have no way of knowing if she's got it or not without testing.

I just spoke to a generally healthy and active 73 year old male friend who is also self-isolating due to a cough and sore throat. He's convinced it's not Coronavirus because of the sore throat, but I pointed out that some people who've had CV report having a sore throat so that is no guarantee and he's doing the right thing by staying at home. He was coughing all the time we were on the phone. He said 'I'm sure it will turn out just to be a cold' and I made the point that he won't know if it's just a cold because without testing there is know way of knowing.

Only people who are admitted to hospital will be tested. Anyone getting symptoms at home could have anything, including CV.

maxbabi · 14/03/2020 19:41

I have a sore throat, headache and coughing loads! Generally feel shit
My hip replacement surgery has been cancelled for the second time now. So I'm feeling quite sorry for myself.
No fever but no idea if I have a temperature has no thermometer.
Aaarrrrggghhhhh.
That's better!!

She's lucky. If we get it we can't possibly send DS away to his grandparents. They're too worried about getting it from him if he's carrying it. Tbh i don't know what we'd do as there's literally no one to help. DH has had pleurisy and had a nightmare that he had it again. I'm scared and not sleeping which i know sounds ridiculous but it has to be bad otherwise why would they be going to the lengths they are (or were) to prevent it spreading?

Gemm83 · 14/03/2020 19:42

DD has developed a cough today 😕 she was a bit snuffly yesterday morning but the cough has really come on. She hasn't got a temperature and has been eating well today and not fatigued. She normally likes a nap in the afternoon but not today. She's in bed and has had a couple of coughs but not continuous. I've told DH that she can't go to school Monday and he's told me not be ridiculous she's got a cold... Despite me telling him it is a NEW cough! Infuriating!!!

defthand · 14/03/2020 19:45

By definition the only people who can tell you (from now, anyway) will have to be sick enough to be admitted to hospital. Doubt they’ll be on their phones.

Daffodil55 · 14/03/2020 19:47

My head is spinning with all this information and some of it I am not completely sure of, so can anyone answer this one please as I have googled until I am all googled out but still not certain.

I can not possibly read every thread and every post on here so I am asking this:

To take the strain off the NHS staff we are told if we think we have symptoms then immediately isolate ourselves and those we live with. Fine I get that. I have also read several times that we would not automatically be tested as we are deemed safe out of harm's way if we do not come out of our homes etc.

So supposing I get symtoms but not a test. I stay indoors for however long it takes until I feel well again. Bearing in mind we are being told that once we have had it we can not catch it again, how do I know (hypothetically!) I have actually had the virus at all and not something else like flu with similar symptoms.

Anyone could isolate because they think they have it, 2 weeks later resume their lives outside the home but if it wasn't the virus we can then get it, hence another isolation and possibly worse!
Sorry if I seem dim because I can assure you I am no such thing but if the NHS tell us to stay home and not turn up at a hospital for tests, yet they have not got the resources or staff to home visit and test everyone with symptoms then there is a flaw in this system.

Can anyone help with my query please?

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 14/03/2020 19:53

I think I may have it and may have been symptomtic with a very mild case since about Wednesday this week.

I've a nasty case of a dry cough and am feeling generally a bit shattered - but it's nothing like the two times I've been actually unwell in my life thus far (once with a serious ear infection that I waited far too long to actually see someone about, and another time when I had pleuritis but was misdiagnosed due to them letting the student practise on me).

I cannot possibly confirm whether I actually have it, though, as I don't meet the criteria for being tested where I am. I'm perfectly fine and have been working from home since the beginning of the week.

The one and only reasons why I think I may have it are that a) I know I've been in contact with a person who lives with someone who's been to a highly affected area and b) I don't feel that great despite being confirmed as essentially not affected by influenza or common colds.

I've been self-isolating ever since finding out I'd been in contact with a person highly likely to have been exposed (who is, themselves, entirely asymptomatic). My child, luckily, is with her father and will stay there for the time being.

Unless they go ahead and commit to better testing, I will never know, I suppose. I don't qualify for testing as per current rules.

AccountAntsy · 14/03/2020 19:56

I don’t think the testing thing is about money at this point. It’s about capacity in the system. There’s not enough capacity to test everyone - test kits, scientists, medical personnel to carry them out - so it’s obvious that it has to be limited. Some other countries like South Korea have massively scaled up their testing capacity, others haven’t.

imaflutteringkite · 14/03/2020 19:58

I have a sore throat that came on suddenly last night, boiling and freezing today and now I've got a cough too. Don't feel especially ill just a bit off colour but I guess it's early days though. I'm not sure I'll ever know if it was Covid 19 but I'm staying home for the foreseeable. Thankfully my family are young and healthy and I haven't seen any vulnerable family members recently.

defthand · 14/03/2020 20:03

It’s not about capacity. They recently brought that up to 10,000.

KenDodd · 14/03/2020 20:06

I wish someone would invent a home testing kit.

AccountAntsy · 14/03/2020 20:11

It’s not about capacity. They recently brought that up to 10,000.

10,000 what, per day? Is that even enough to test everyone in the country who thinks they should be tested? I feel like I’ve seen that many posts on MN alone from people who think they have it.

defthand · 14/03/2020 20:26

Tests per day yes. That capacity was supposed to come online from the 13th of March - probably why we had a bumper 4500 test results today.

Capacity is fine (for now). They ramped it up then changed policy.

Yabadee · 14/03/2020 20:55

@Zoecarter and @SunflowerSuit

By ‘young 50’ I really meant still thinks she’s 20 🙈 she’s constantly out partying, stays out for days etc she’s my dads baby sister and he’s 54 but she seems soooooo much younger

YoTheGinPussyOfStMawesOnThigh · 14/03/2020 21:03

I started feeling ill Monday, started to vomit what appeared to be blood on Tuesday morning so rang the doctor. It has been treated as a chest infection with antibiotics but I have had most if not all of the symptoms for Corona being mentioned on Govt websites. I have had a pig awful cough all week which has meant sleeping propped up in bed. I am not asthmatic but now know what that feels like as I have been wheezing for days. No way of being tested so I can only wonder what I have had, at least if it is Corona its done.

user1480880826 · 14/03/2020 21:06

@BooseysMom same here. No option to send kids to grandparents because they live far away. But also, they have health complications so I wouldn’t dream of sending a potential carrier to stay with them. I just have to hope we don’t get too ill and can continue to look after each other.

Piplette · 14/03/2020 21:10

I think this is where the lack of widespread testing causes a challenge.

The symptoms seem so varied that it is easy for people to down play them. Many people just plough on and will struggle to accept they may have it - just last week I felt a bit run down/lethargic. I put this down to lack of sleep caused by my teething 5 month old and took no steps to self isolate but I could very well have had it given its now being transmitted through the community.

I also think the symptoms listed on the official advice are perhaps too specific as from what I've read since people just experienced fatigue and flu like symptoms not a cough or temperature.

daisychain01 · 14/03/2020 21:28

People at my work have had fever and cough and continued to come in.

Its incredibly irresponsible of your employers not to issue clear Corona Virus guidelines to its staff. Ultimately they are the idiots for not supporting them because when 75% of their workforce end up sick and unable to work because they probably feel under threat so keep coming in and infecting others, they won't have a viable business.

abcde11 · 14/03/2020 21:31

No cough, fever or fatigue (well no more than usual) but do have a feeling of pressure on my chest like I've been out running in cold air. Who knows if it's CV 🤷🏻‍♀️. Seems a bit weird to have that an no other symptoms though...maybe I'm just being caught up in the panic of it all, not sure what to do.

BooseysMom · 14/03/2020 21:34

@user1480880826.. yes we can only hope it jumps from one to another and doesn't hit us both together. I'm thinking back to the swine flu which we both got at exactly the same time only we didnt have a 6yo to care for then! Good luck and stay well x

Moomin8 · 14/03/2020 21:35

My mum and my dds aged 16 and 10 think they may have had it in December whilst I was in hospital being induced. It was a dry cough and very high fevers for all of them but my 10 year old got over it more quickly. But of course, it wasn't officially in the U.K. in December.

CourtneyB123 · 14/03/2020 21:35

I've been feeling ropey since last week, sore throat, hot and cold chills, nausea and persistent headaches with a cough. I have periods of feeling ok and now I'm feeling dreadful. Cant be sure if I have it or not but have self isolated me and the family for a week. I told work and they were angry for taking time off, I work in healthcare can you believe it!

Binterested · 14/03/2020 21:35

I have that too abcde - slight compression that settled in my chest a few days ago but I feel reasonably well. Who knows what to do with that ?
