People don’t realize young and health will also die

Hi, I am Chinese and have been in the UK for 10 years. I have read through lots of the threads here and been surprised that people think only old and vulnerable will die from Covid-19. Truth is 15% will need oxygen, 5% will need ventilation. Many of them are young. If no treatment is provided large part of these patient will die. That’s what happened in Wuhan and is happening in Italy. The reason we only see death of old patients I the UK now is because the average course from symptoms onsite to death is 17 days. Young patient will stick longer. Mild cases range from slightly cough to pneumonia! The word pneumonia itself is serious enough. I am very worried about the government’s action.

If people are worried and not sure what to do one thing they culd do is deal with the legal side now to spare loved ones later:-

  1. Make a legally valid will
  2. If not married make sure their partner's rights to children are addressed
  3. Appointment guardians for the children in the will in case you both die
  4. Put all your papers in order so if you die relatives have details of your facebook account, bank account details and that kind of thing.

Right I am going to stop here. If you are not afraid of dying then nothing will bother you. But I do think people afraid of dying should change their behavior under this situation. Even 0.2% is not a small number if we carry on like this. Not to mention those recovered with permanent lung damage.

0.2% is 1 in 500 isn’t it? How can anyone be blasé about possibly 1 in 500 of say 80% of young people dying? There’s some strange thought patterns going on on this thread.

It’s very irresponsible to scaremonger like this with incorrect information OP. Can’t you see people are worried enough?

This is NOT scaremongering. Thank you OP for starting this thread.

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 18:01

The case fatality rate for people in their 40's is 0.4%

I don't know how many people are in their 40's in the UK - would 5 million be a decent estimate?

5m x 80% expected to get it x 0.4 CFR

= 16,000 deaths of people in their 40's

noblegiraffe · 14/03/2020 18:03

It is scaremongering.

Only 2 deaths in people under the age of 40 in Italy, both with pre-existing conditions.

ragged · 14/03/2020 18:03

You need to learn how to post links to sources, OP. It's easy. Try it.

I was wondering if the high death rate in Italy had to do with lack of ventilators. :(

Air quality in cities, Chinese & Iranian, is terrible. Long been so. I wondered if that meant lots of low level lung damage to their populations.

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 18:04

Actually I have just got population stats by age so will recalculate... (it's more, not less)

rumandbiscuits · 14/03/2020 18:05

How is this helpful?! It isn't this is completely out of our control. We can wash our hands and stay indoors that's it! How is telling us we are going to die helping?!

NellyGrace · 14/03/2020 18:05

Does anyone have a list of underlying conditions or a link to one?

I’ve seen a list with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy on it and need to know if this is correct.

BennyVegas · 14/03/2020 18:06

One of my colleagues is from northern Italy, we are in our 30s. She told me two of her school friends have died

This seems at odds with the reports of people who have died in Italy and their age ranges.

So reasonable worst case scenario of deaths in 30s and 40s...

80% will get it (Govt figure)

0.2 & 0.4% case fatality rate

= c. 42,000 deaths in 30-49 age bracket

Population stats from here: www.statista.com/statistics/281174/uk-population-by-age/

From worldometer today

People don’t realize young and health will also die
Purplewhitelie · 14/03/2020 18:12

A bit grim but factual.

Veterinari · 14/03/2020 18:13

@Firespider I'm not really sure what the point of this thread is? What are you hoping to achieve? You're scaremongering and all of the published data from China contradicts your opinion

It's literally factual information.

Factual information isn't scaremongering just because you don't like it.
