Herd immunity

UK's chief scientific officer said yesterday that the UK strategy for coronavirus is to encourage herd immunity. This will require 60% of the population to be infected with coronavirus, he said. WHO currently estimates an overall case fatality rate from coronavirus of 3.4%. This will equate to 1.2 million deaths in the UK! Even if you go for the lower (perhaps more realistic) case fatality rate of 1%, that'll mean close to 400,000 deaths in the UK! China currently has 3189 deaths and they may be already over the peak. AIBU to think that this is a bizarre and negligent approach?
