Are you sending your kids to school Monday?

Yes, No or Maybe answers only please.

As the WHO have now criticised the UK Government's strategy; death rates today doubled and we simply have no idea of the actual numbers of cases due to very limited testing. I'm seriously considering following the advice of WHO and most other European governments and self-isolating me and the kids from Monday.

Yes

millymaud · 14/03/2020 20:48

georgie this is hypothetical but:

is this indefinitely

Yes.

will they be leaving the house at all

Yes, there’s a huge difference between leaving the house and spending all day cheek by jowl with hundreds of other kids in an unclean environment with no access to soap.

will you eventually be prepared to give up your jobs

I would work around the above as much as possible. Depending on the age of the children leave them at home. I wouldn’t normally do this with primary aged children but I think they are safer at home than school.

i assume they aren’t in exam years

If they were, point 3 would be irrelevant.

TheSandman · 14/03/2020 20:50

Of course I am - she's got a Nat 4 exam!

RogueV · 14/03/2020 20:56

YES

VerbenaGirl · 14/03/2020 21:02

Yes, we are going to school and work as normal, but my in-laws are vulnerable - so are staying shut away at home.

LKLZ · 14/03/2020 21:08

No. My children are staying at home and we are only undertaking essential trips for food etc.
The NEU have today asked the government why schools are staying open and to publish their 'scientific models'.
Senior school children do not need looking after.
Universities are closing.
The government are trying to bring in emergency legislation to force schools to stay open.
Why?
The press are saying that large gatherings are likely to be stopped this coming week. Schools are large gatherings!
Surely we need to reduce contact to reduce the number cases so that our already overstretched NHS can cope and be used for those front line workers that need it.
Where is Boris, we have not heard from him and the country is in crisis.
Premier League is off, Disney is shut, APPLE are closing. My local netball and cricket clubs have stopped but schools are still open
Why?
Is anyone has the answers I would appreciate it, as I am very confused and very worried.

Worriedmum54321 · 14/03/2020 21:08

I would be very surprised if the schools are not closed by the end of this week - or at least only open for children with nowhere else to go.

bigchris · 14/03/2020 21:09

Yes

littlemissmuffins · 14/03/2020 21:10

No.

Whatever the repercussions, which I believe will be suspended anyway.

Another one who has until now had my DC at maximum attendance, taking their education seriously.

I think to have taken them out before now would have been an overreaction. Not dissing those who have done it before now though, especially those who have high risk DC or Family Members. Everyone has their own assessment of risk. But now - certainly.

This is too new a disease, and looking too risky.

I don't trust our government, they are going against WHO guidelines and what almost every other country is doing. They are listening to economists not epidemiologists!!

I have an extremely high risk close Family member who is important to my DC, only in their 60s, but who would almost certainly die if contracts this. Even if I didn't, would still be pulling them out of school.

Not prepared to be guinea pigs.

nurseymummyx · 14/03/2020 21:11

No x

N4ish · 14/03/2020 21:12

Yes, sending both DC in unless they have symptoms.

littlemissmuffins · 14/03/2020 21:13

Won't be cooping them up indoors though. Will still be walking to local parks every Second day (but not the playgrounds), where the risk to catch outside with UV and air and distancing, is minimal

Getitdonesharpish · 14/03/2020 21:24

Ours will be going to school and nursery. The only change we have made so far is keeping a physical distance from elderly neighbours, friends and family and making sure they all know we can get them supplies if they don’t want to go out and about.

Sippingmytea · 14/03/2020 21:25

No. I’ll be keeping them off for the foreseeable future. I feel too uneasy about sending them in.

I have no faith in the government to protect our vulnerable. We will be practising social distancing aside from supermarket runs for ourselves and elderly family members / neighbours.

I’ve just ordered some Maths and English books so we can keep teaching at home.

I hope to God I am wrong.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 14/03/2020 21:25

Yes

Iloveacurry · 14/03/2020 21:28

Yes until they tell us otherwise. Also I have a job where it’s business as usual, so just getting on with it.

Ifartglitterybaubles · 14/03/2020 21:29

No.

Vargas · 14/03/2020 21:29

Yes,

yomommasmomma · 14/03/2020 21:30

For those not sending their children to school, how long do you plan to keep them off school for?

Craiglang · 14/03/2020 21:34

Yes. Because I have to work. In a school.

millymaud · 14/03/2020 21:40

As long as needed yo

DragonMamma · 14/03/2020 21:43

I’ve got one who’s going and one who isn’t. The eldest isn’t going as she’s had a temp since Friday - so the school have told her she can’t go in. The youngest is fine but I wish I could keep him off too, but until work announce that we are now WFH I can’t. My stepfather is disabled and will watch the eldest, who’s very self sufficient anyway, but I can’t ask him to have both without just cause.

I’d not send the youngest otherwise.

edgewater · 14/03/2020 21:49

Yes. I have to go to work. When they shut down and there is no school I will deal with not being paid but while I am paid and there is no virus at school they will go.

bizzybuzzy · 14/03/2020 21:52

what happens to the kids of people working in the NHS or the emergency services?

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 14/03/2020 21:54

yomama as long as necessary, as soon as this thing is under control .... probably until September.
