In the supermarket this morning a guy in front me at the checkout bought 120 cans of chickpeas (cashier told me when I asked). I mean, WTF??? Confused Can any top this bit of craziness?

I couldn’t get Chick peas or lentil this morning, that’s probably why.Angry

KatherineJaneway · 14/03/2020 14:57

He's likely selling them on for a profit on Ebay.

Finfintytint · 14/03/2020 14:57

Still plenty of dried chickpea packets in my supermarket. People can’t be arsed to soak them I suspect.

Letsdoanamechangeagain · 14/03/2020 14:58

Who the hell needs 120 cans of chickpeas? Unless he was buying for a food bank they should have refused him that many. Supermarkets need to get a grip on this.

Reginabambina · 14/03/2020 14:58

He must be planing of self isolating and eating them every single day. I hope he bought lots of loo roll as well.

Isadora2007 · 14/03/2020 14:59

Maybe he likes hummus?
Weird. I can’t think of one use for a can if chickpeas really...
I’m going to stockpile pot noodles... yummy.

managedmis · 14/03/2020 14:59

Madness

LentilWeavingExpert · 14/03/2020 15:00

Well I’m just about to empty the shelves of dried lentils so sounds quite reasonable to me!

DettolsYourFriend · 14/03/2020 15:02

Chickpeas ... ew. He can have them but I'll get fighty if he takes all my tinned sweet corn 😆

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 14/03/2020 15:04

I do like chickpeas - but living on them for 2 weeks? No, just no.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 14/03/2020 15:04

You can make vegan meringue from the water in chickpeas. Maybe he fancies that!! However that is indeed madness and I agree I would have expected the supermarket to stop him.

missyB1 · 14/03/2020 15:06

Does he have an enormous walk in larder I wonder 🤔 how do these people store this stuff?

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 14/03/2020 15:07

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts Vegan meringue from chickpea water? It feels like life is getting way too surreal. Somebody pinch me awake.

ChessIsASport · 14/03/2020 15:08

People are just buying up things that they think they will be able to sell for a profit. It is ridiculous. Maybe they need to bring in temporary laws to prevent profiteering.
Anyone for £7.99 hand soap that is usually 95p in the supermarket?

Finfintytint · 14/03/2020 15:10

Chickpea water is Aquafaba. It can be used to replace egg whites. Never tried it though but saw it on a vegan website.

ScouseMar · 14/03/2020 15:10

Chickpeas? I cannot think of anything I'd like to eat less 🤢 If you're going to be in isolation for a week, at least get some nice food in.

BournvilleGreen · 14/03/2020 15:21

Our supermarket was bare today- aisles and aisles we're empty. The only thing that looked vaguely normal was fresh meat, deli, cheese etc, face cream/skincare (not handcare), pre-packed cake mixes (Betty crocker stuff), fresh-baked bread/bakery. Anything remotely long-life was gone- cereals, crisps, freezer food, uht milks, tins/cans, rice, pasta, bottled water/soft drinks, loo roll, kitchen roll, sanitary pads/tampons, soap, handwash, bleach, cloths, laundry powder, washing up liquid. Just all gone. The checkout staff said people were queuing outside before they opened and racing in.
Like Christmas without the fun Sad

GameSetMatch · 14/03/2020 15:31

It’s very annoying people stock pilling, yes maybe get two extra meals if you really must, but who needs 120 cans of chickpeas?

I always get online food shops but I can’t because there’s no slots available in the next two weeks, I’m annoyed I’m going to have to drag two under 5s around the supermarket, I’ll get annoyed when I’m there also because lots of things will be out of stock.

BournvilleGreen What a nightmare - some people are going utterly crazy.

TitsInAbsentia · 14/03/2020 20:32

I think the supermarkets are going to have to start taking some actions on how many people can take of each item, I mean 120 cans shouldn't have been allowed under any circumstance surely?

Scruffyoak · 14/03/2020 20:33

I love chickpeas. We have lots of tins (brought before the last 2 weeks) I use them with tinned tomatoes and spices for a low calorie curry.

buttermilkwaffles · 14/03/2020 20:34

Not UK, but someone in Canada spent 70,000 dollars buying all the hand sanitiser from all the branches of a supermarket to sell on Amazon at 4 times the price. I think he made 100,000 profit before Amazon eventually suspended his account for price gouging.

In case anyone has some time for some experimental baking in the next few weeks...
