Been sent home from work..

I arrived at work and my duty manager told me the new updates on Coronavirus and what the company are doing to prevent it spreading.

I have a cough, I wouldn't say it is continuous, it's just a cough that sometimes brings up phlegm. I find that if I'm too warm my cough is worse.

I don't have any other symptoms at all, but I have been sent home from work. Does this mean I now have to self isolate for seven days? They have told me to ring in the morning to let them know how I feel but I feel completely normal anyway.

Unsure of what to do, I don't believe I have the virus but I completely understand the worry, and that it would have been selfish for me to work my shift.

Yes you now have to self isolate for 7 days.

Enjoy the world of Netflix, iPlayer and MN....

The advice is to self isolate for 7 days if you have a new persistent cough.

So your work were right to send you home and I can't help but wonder why you went in the 1st place.

Forgot to mention I have had this cough for a while, everyone at work knows I've had a cough for ages, I would say January time

That's completely different then! The advice for you is not to self isolate.

Your work may not agree, but I would not necessarily self isolate.

Meg1999 · 14/03/2020 13:41

@Random18 thanks for replying! I shall see what they say, I have text my general manager regardless to see what she says.

But it's also difficult because I don't want to worry anyone, especially if I go back into work tomorrow. I would like to do a test just in case but I have no way of doing one...

OP probably went in like most people will do because we have a culture in this country of work until you drop and keep calm and carry on. My manager's basically think anyone who is self isolating over fears of corona are being 'a bit dramatic'.

No one is going to self isolate from work unless their boss tells them to, rightly or wrongly.

Rhubarbpeony · 14/03/2020 14:02

If this is the same cough you’ve had for months and it’s phlegmy it doesn’t sound like Coronavirus. I wouldn’t self isolate unless you have a fever under the circumstances.

Meg1999 · 14/03/2020 14:07

@Jamieson90

Completely correct, even when I had a genuine concern I spoke to my manager to be told not to worry about it. This was two days ago, and now today they are all panicking.

One of the first things they mentioned was that they are already short staffed as it is.
