Would you travel to Mexico next week?

I’ve said no. Friend has said yes.
Apparently only 12 confirmed cases (due to high Temp’s..?)
I’ve read a lot that is saying they are under reporting due to lack of testing...
4 families (potentially) going, with toddlers.

Argentina is banning all direct flights to and from Europe from the 17th. At the moment it’s making people who have come from Europe self quarantine and won’t let them fly home. This all changed this week..

PuffinShop · 14/03/2020 13:15

They don't have many cases yet, but they'll soon have plenty if selfish people from affected countries keep going there to spread the virus. The UK has hundreds of (confirmed) cases, you are a risk.

It's obvious that most tourists don't give a shit about the communities they visit, but this is another level.

NamechangeMeH · 14/03/2020 13:15

@QueenofmyPrinces you’ll see from my op that I am also saying no, it’s other party saying yes. So I’m canvassing opinion for their benefit.

@Honeyroar thanks. That’s interesting to note

If they only have a few cases then they may not let you in?

People don't understand that we in Europe are now the epicentre of this disease. Like China was a couple of months ago. And remember how people from China had to be quarantined upon arriving in the UK then?

Also, it's incredibly selfish to possibly bring the virus with you!

ineedaholidaynow · 14/03/2020 13:19

No!

Why are people going on holiday at the moment? Huge risk of being stuck somewhere

NoWordForFluffy · 14/03/2020 13:19

I wouldn't go to an airport / get on a plane right now, no.

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 14/03/2020 13:20

Apparently only 12 confirmed cases

Even if this is true (figures are likely to go up): between the UK and Mexico, it's the UK that's the problem right now, so this is the wrong way round of looking at it.

It's not socially responsible to travel to a country not yet as badly affected - how does your friend who wants to go feel about (potentially!!!) being personally responsible for exacerbating the outbreak in Mexico?

buttonmoonb4tea · 14/03/2020 13:32

No I wouldn't go, unless you want to be stuck in Mexico for a few months. I'm not sure if Mexico will be happy will to accept you staying and mingling in the country, given you're from a country which currently has no intention of controlling the epidemic in the UK, and Europe being the epicentre of the pandemic.

Give your head a wobble, will ya!

Youngatheart00 · 14/03/2020 13:36

Europe and the UK is the new community hotbed of CV19 and it is selfish to transmit it to elsewhere in the world. You have no way of knowing if you’re infectious as the spread starts before you’re symptomatic.

That’s the primary reason for “definitely not”.

As a secondary issue, the increasing border lockdowns mean I’d also be very hesitant to leave the UK as who knows if you’ll be able to return any time soon.

Almahart · 14/03/2020 13:40

No. I’m just cancelling a trip to Morocco cos a) I don’t want to risk bringing virus with me b) I don’t want to get stuck there.

In the back of my mind is c) if I were one of the fluke middle aged people who did become seriously ill I would want to be here (understatement)

Itsjustmee · 15/03/2020 00:40

It’s Spring Break so if your going to Cancun it’s party central right now
Lots of young drunk American and Canadian teens partying drinking throwing up 24/7

managedmis · 15/03/2020 00:50

With toddlers? TODDLERS?!?

Rainbowqueeen · 15/03/2020 00:56

Can you afford to self isolate when you return home? And by that I mean not with sick leave because many companies are requiring employees who travel to use annual leave or leave without pay to cover any self isolation required. Also your travel insurance is unlikely to cover you for any self isolation or change in flights while you are there

I’d check those things out first
Actually no I just wouldn’t do it

RainbowMum11 · 15/03/2020 01:00

No chance.

MoltonSilver · 15/03/2020 01:02

SIL lives in Mexico City. She said coronavirus is rampant, they're just not counting.

I think travelling anywhere is insane and irresponsible at the moment.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 01:17

Nope

DramaAlpaca · 15/03/2020 01:20

I'm due to go in May. At least I was. I'm pretty sure I won't be going now, or indeed anywhere else for a while.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 15/03/2020 01:26

Not a chance in hell.

ARoseInHarlem · 15/03/2020 01:30

Um, I think that decision may be made for you.

Additionally, people need to be thinking about the community, not just themselves. There’s no denying what the science shows.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/03/2020 01:33

Apparently only 12 confirmed cases

It's 26 now, 11 new cases confirmed today.

Mexicoco · 15/03/2020 01:35

Its absolutely being underreported here. A test costs upwards of £200. People here can't afford that. They've decided today to close the schools. Also some gyms are closing. The hoarding is starting. We're right behind Europe and when the real numbers start to emerge that's when the real panic will start. Also, Mexicans are not very good with germ control. Openly sneezing and hand washing is not a huge priority
I would stay away except I live here Confused

SnoozyLou · 15/03/2020 01:38

I know someone who flew out to Spain a day or 2 ago. I bet she had a nasty surprise when they started turning the planes back. Now she's stuck there, in lockdown.

Don't expect the FO to help you get back. And if the planes stop running, that's an awful lot of land to cover.

What do you reckon?

ShyTown · 15/03/2020 01:40

Europe is the epicentre of it right now. I don’t think you would be any more at risk there then you would be in the U.K. However, you pose a potential risk to the people of Mexico so travelling could be selfish. If you do get sick in Mexico you can’t count on good healthcare. If flights home are cancelled then jokes about riding it out on a sun lounger with a margarita aside, that would actually be pretty tedious and madly expensive. The only upside is that going during spring break might be slightly less hideous than usual because a lot of American students aren’t travelling (according to my colleagues with college age kids). Personally I’d probably cancel.

theflushedzebra · 15/03/2020 02:47

God almighty, here's me agonising on whether to send he kids to school on Monday, and people are still considering whether to still fly away on holiday?!

No of course you shouldn't fly. The shit's hit the fan. There is shit ALL OVER THE FAN.

Don't go on holiday now.

HoldMyLobster · 15/03/2020 03:19

4 families (potentially) going, with toddlers.

You're thinking about taking toddlers to Mexico in the midst of a pandemic?

Words fail me.
