Fuming with the stupidity of delivery drivers

madcatladyforever · 14/03/2020 11:53

I am at home, having spoken to my GP, with a slight fever and a runny nose, all the symptoms of the common cold and self isolating. I don't think I have anything serious but have been told to self isolate as I work in the NHS.
I have barricaded the house and I'm getting deliveries online.
I am livid. Everyone else happy to leave my stuff on the doorstep. Just had the toilet rolls I ordered delivered as I have run out, explained nicely to the delivery man through the closed door that I am isolated and therefore cannot sign for the product.
Have held up my driving license through the see through glass so he can see it's me and he wants me to come out and sign for the item.
After a lengthy conversation I have completely lost it and asked him if he is a fucking idiot or what, I am self isolated under suspicion of coronavirus and he wants me to come out, cough all over him and put my germy hands all over his machine.
He refused to deliver my roilet rolls - I have none now and has gone off with them.
What kind of absolute fuckery is this.
Just about to phone the people I ordered them from to complain but that doesn't change the fact I've paid for them and have no loo rolls at all.
I'm thinking of ringing my neighbour and asking her to throw one over the fence. She wasn't in earlier to sign for me.

@walkingtheway I was self-employed until the beginning of this year and I always put my health before my work.

I guess this guy will learn to when he infects his elderly parent or his immunocompromised child.

Pentium85 · 14/03/2020 13:21

It concerns me the absolute lack of brain cells some PP have on here.

You do realise that if you have even the slightest symptoms of a COLD, you have to isolate for 7 DAYS.

Not 14. Not 10. Not 5.

7 DAYS.

Nofoolfornoone · 14/03/2020 13:22

For all those asking why the op clogged 111 - nhs staff have different guidance to the general public for obvious reasons. And we are being asked to contact 111 as they need to risk assess each nhs worker individually

HesMyLobster · 14/03/2020 13:27

I agree with pp- you did the right thing (possibly apart from the swearing bit, but I do understand that too!)
It is seriously worrying the number of people saying you're being silly as it's just a cold, or asking if you've been tested.
Do these people not read/see/hear the news?
It's been everywhere! How do people not know?
I have a cough and a slight temperature. I'm 90% it's just a cold picked up from the kids in my class and not CV but I'm self isolating for a week because that's what the guidelines say.
And I won't contact 111 unless symptoms get a lot worse. And I know I won't be tested. Because I've seen the news and read the guidelines.

wash hands put something over face put hand round door & squiggle (wipe pen/implement with antiseptic tissue) tell him to put loo rolls down & run -
& tell him to wash his hands & wash your hands when collecting stuff delivered (everybody). & don't do what somebody I know v well does & put the bags on kitchen work surface or kitchen table
ring up delivery company n/email & "suggest" strongly & politely that unless they want their delivery drivers going off sick they need to have rethink
being rude to someone doing their job is not on op

theflushedzebra · 14/03/2020 13:41

Next time OP, wash your hands, get him to leave the thing on the doorstep and stand back, then sign, then wash hands again. And don't cough or chat to him. Handwashing is incredibly effective. Disinfect your door handles too. Sorted.

A scarf wrapped around your nose and mouth is also surprisingly effective as a barrier - obvs not as much as a surgical mask, but about 50% as good.

Leflic · 14/03/2020 13:42

HesMyLobster So presumably you know the risk is from passing on the virus physically. Which means picking it up and it coming into contact with an entry point into your body.
Hence washing the virus off your hands.
But you know that right.

KatherineJaneway · 14/03/2020 13:44

There is such a thing as applying common sense.

There's such a thing as disciplinary action if you don't follow the company rules.

If someone called me a fucking idiot they could whistle for their toilet rolls.

Totally.

Useryokyesno · 14/03/2020 13:45

You were rude but we do need some processes for deliveries that would normally be signed for.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/03/2020 13:52

Baracading? Confused

viccat · 14/03/2020 13:56

I just read Royal Mail will not be handing over the device for signing for parcels now, they will place the parcel at your door and wait at a safe distance for you to pick it up and then type in your name themselves to confirm delivery. This sounds like a great approach.

Isla727 · 14/03/2020 13:59

Thank you OP for prioritising other people's health even though that meant you didn't get loo roll, which must be a pain!

What a dick of a delivery driver. Phone the company and complain!

Rumnraisin · 14/03/2020 14:02

I had an email from Tesco yesterday to say that if self-isolating to put a note on the delivery confirmation so that the driver is aware. It also says that the driver will sign the electronic signature for you when you’re happy with everything.
I’m not surprised you were annoyed OP, some people don’t seem to realise what’s happening at the moment, including the delivery driver.
What annoys me is that even with the daily guidelines splashed all over the news since the delay phase, some people are still getting it wrong. A previous post on here said you obviously know it’s just a cold because if you didnt you would be self-isolating for 2 weeks.....2 weeks? How is that 7 days as stated by the government?

GinandGingerBeer · 14/03/2020 14:11

The advice is NOT to cal 111 if you have a fever or persistent cough and to self isolate for 7 days.

LittleLittleLittle · 14/03/2020 14:18

@GinandGingerBeer the OP is NHS staff so they have different advice.

MissDemelzaCarne · 14/03/2020 14:51

the OP is NHS staff so they have different advice
No we don’t Hmm

Mayaaaaa · 14/03/2020 15:34

My dad works for the NHs. He doesnt have difference advice regarding 111.

In his case he must call his manager straight away. Not 111.

Mayaaaaa · 14/03/2020 15:41

Also if the OP had been given that advice, due to he working in the NHS, I am sure she would have said.

But let's see the 'sensible op who is prioritising others health'

Took up 111 time
Took up her gps time
Has told people she has suspect corona
Yet is, at this time planning a 7 day isolation

Its ridiculous to go round telling anyone you are isolating with suspected corona, when you are not.

That shit starts rumours and starts people panicking.

So she isnt really prioritising anyone. She is taking up resources we were asked not to take up, especially when you are sure, it's just a cold. Then trying to scare people to doing as she asks

Yes it's a shit situation. But he was doing his job. It's not his fault his employers are behind.

Op could have also taken steps.

Nofoolfornoone · 14/03/2020 15:52

I work for the nhs and I have different advice to what the public have been given.

Nofoolfornoone · 14/03/2020 15:54

OP was told to self isolate . What is the problem mayaaaa?! Your attitude to OP is awful.

Mayaaaaa · 14/03/2020 15:59

I didnt say op should have self isolated.

I said nothing she said makes sense.

She is spreading rumours she has suspect covid. She doesnt. That's shocking.

She hasnt said she was given seperate advice. Bet she does now, though. But she also then went on to speak to her gp.

She knows it not covid, because she is at this point planning a 7 day isolation.why would you tell people you have suspected covid when you dont?

I think the OP calling someone a fucking idiot, is absolutely awful. Someone who is trying to do their job. I am sure as a NHS worker she wouldnt be happy if she was carrying out something she had been told to do, and some called her a fucking idiot.

Oblomov20 · 14/03/2020 16:26

Which supermarket? Surely they've all told their drivers to 'Corona' adjust?

He could have stepped outside your property, say outside of your path or gate, left the pad/screen behind, and watched you sign it, come back and collected it, surely?

Presumably more drivers will face this exact scenario over the next few weeks.

Haven't Tesco already asked you on their website to stipulate if your self isolating?

Lightofthephoenix · 14/03/2020 16:27

You do realise that if you have even the slightest symptoms of a COLD, you have to isolate for 7 DAYS

Cold? I thought it was a cough or a temperature not a cold?

GilchristQ · 14/03/2020 16:29

I doubt a supermarket was delivering just toilet roll.

CoronaVera · 14/03/2020 16:40

Everyone having a go at the OP, have a word with yourselves. She's following government guidelines and being sensible.

If you're not doing this yourselves in a week or two then you're letting the whole country down.

Now, pull together and be supportive.
