Fuming with the stupidity of delivery drivers

madcatladyforever · 14/03/2020 11:53

I am at home, having spoken to my GP, with a slight fever and a runny nose, all the symptoms of the common cold and self isolating. I don't think I have anything serious but have been told to self isolate as I work in the NHS.
I have barricaded the house and I'm getting deliveries online.
I am livid. Everyone else happy to leave my stuff on the doorstep. Just had the toilet rolls I ordered delivered as I have run out, explained nicely to the delivery man through the closed door that I am isolated and therefore cannot sign for the product.
Have held up my driving license through the see through glass so he can see it's me and he wants me to come out and sign for the item.
After a lengthy conversation I have completely lost it and asked him if he is a fucking idiot or what, I am self isolated under suspicion of coronavirus and he wants me to come out, cough all over him and put my germy hands all over his machine.
He refused to deliver my roilet rolls - I have none now and has gone off with them.
What kind of absolute fuckery is this.
Just about to phone the people I ordered them from to complain but that doesn't change the fact I've paid for them and have no loo rolls at all.
I'm thinking of ringing my neighbour and asking her to throw one over the fence. She wasn't in earlier to sign for me.

OP posts:

Policy is usually that as soon as a customer becomes abusive you walk away. So if you swear at someone, that’s the end of the conversation.

NormaLouiseBates · 14/03/2020 12:33

I think the OP is getting a hard time here. The driver WAS an idiot. Ocado have updated their website to say they will still deliver if you're self isolating but they'll leave it on your doorstep and phone you to come and collect it once they're back in their van.

It's not like he was delivery £100 bottles of champagne ffs, it was loo roll.

copperoliver · 14/03/2020 12:35

Ring up the company and demand he brings them back. X

crustycrab · 14/03/2020 12:37

Why did you ring 111 and your GP for a runny nose?

You work in the NHS, yet it's people like you who are crippling it

viccat · 14/03/2020 12:42

You shouldn't have sworn at him but he was being particularly difficult about it under the circumstances. Delivery drivers often leave things in "safe places" anyway so this wouldn't have been any different.

Mayaaaaa · 14/03/2020 12:45

Didnt they ask people with non Corona but poorly symptoms to not clog 111?

gamerchick · 14/03/2020 12:46

You're not under suspicion of the virus though, you have a cold you said it yourself.

You should complain so the company alters its policy. It wasn't his fault he couldn't deliver. I wouldn't have left them either with that attitude.

Leflic · 14/03/2020 12:48

It’s not the Black Death, wash the (cold ) virus off your hands, sign wash them again.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 14/03/2020 12:48

There should be a section on your order for 'delivery instructions'. You could put a note on there for delivery to side access, over gate etc. Generally that puts the blame on you should anything go missing that you haven't signed for.

gamerchick · 14/03/2020 12:50

It’s not the Black Death, wash the (cold ) virus off your hands, sign wash them again

I don't think that is dramatic enough.

Liveinside · 14/03/2020 12:55

ANYONE with cough or a fever is now suspected of having COVID-19 and must self isolate.

What do people not understand about the new rules designed to stop the spread?

They’ve been pretty clear

walkingtheway · 14/03/2020 12:59

@Littlelittlelittle your attitude is disgusting. The self employed are having a tough time right now.

Butterwhy · 14/03/2020 12:59

It sounds ridiculous, but some companies take the money out of their pay if it's not signed for. You're better off contacting the company and pointing out that they need to instruct their delivery drivers to have more flexibility if required. I don't blame him really, no offense but I wouldn't want money for someone else's toilet roll to come out of my already low wage, especially when I have a ridiculous amount of other deliveries to make.

SoupDragon · 14/03/2020 13:00

If someone called me a fucking idiot they could whistle for their toilet rolls.

This.

Mayaaaaa · 14/03/2020 13:05

Yet OP, had you posted saying you were in isolation and were thinking of going out for a run/to walk the dog etc everyone would've jumped on you for not taking the terms of your isolation seriously

Theres massive ways to mitigate risk. He would be at more risk if he goes to a house who has corona but doesnt have symptoms.

Op has a cold. She knows she has a cold.

She could have applied common sense herself.

She didnt need to speak to him or even see him.

Saying dont sign for deliveries is all well and good, but who is paying that driver if you decide to complain you did recieve it.

You could have got your bog roll and been decent to that bloke all at once

I am guessing your piss poor attitude is why he didnt bend over backwards to help.

BecauseReasons · 14/03/2020 13:06

His hands are tied by the protocols of the company for whom he works. You shot the messenger, who then kept your toilet rolls. Can't say I blame him tbh.

georgialondon · 14/03/2020 13:07

You lose the argument by your rude behaviour. I'd have flung your loo rolls over the hedge if I was the driver

Thinkingaboutsummer2020 · 14/03/2020 13:12

If his company hasn’t changed their policy yet then there’s not much he can do - I’m sure if you ring them and explain they can rearrange it for you. There’s not need to speak to people like that.

SisyphusDad · 14/03/2020 13:13

On these 'jobsworth / no common sense' threads, posters are usually falling over themselves to defend the employee. Why should this be any different? If his procedures have not been changed, it is his management's fault, not his.

ThePrincessButtercup · 14/03/2020 13:13

The driver was being a fucking idiot, however that’s not an acceptable reason to call him one in the course of his duties so YWBU.

YWABU to bother 111 and your GP about a cold. I’m a fellow NHS worker with a snotty nose and the occasional sneeze. I’m apyrexial and don’t have a ‘persistent’ cough so I’ve no more got Covid19 than I have Ebola. I’ve taken a weeks annual leave and some paracetamol and would happily open my door to anyone if needed.

SinkGirl · 14/03/2020 13:15

sometimes I wish people would just apply some common sense rather than stick to a rigid 'rule'.

I take it you don’t have insecure zero hours employment, no employment rights and a role where not following the rules can get you fired.

wendywoopywoo222 · 14/03/2020 13:17

Never any excuse to swear at a delivery driver who obviously has rules to do his job. Very unreasonable of you and your own fault now you have no toilet rolls.

Nofoolfornoone · 14/03/2020 13:18

You did the right thing.
All the comments on here about you being ridiculous as it’s only a cold are incredibly worrying. And asking why you called 111 or why you Have not been tested . It amazes me people are still asking these questions!!! No wonder the government doesn’t want us on lock down yet - too many people havnt got a clue how to follow basic instructions!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 14/03/2020 13:19

it's likely that if the delivery driver doesn't get the delivery signed-for then he'll be sacked or at least reprimanded. So, his actions were perfectly logical and not those of a f*ing idiot.

CallmeAngelina · 14/03/2020 13:20

What a drama.
You should have washed your hands, taken a long, deep breath so as not to breathe on him, wiped his machine with an anti-bac wipe, signed and shut the door and then re-washed your hands.
Job done, and you'd have your toilet rolls.
