I have been to London many times before. And I have never seen it so quiet on a sat. It is so empty.

I think the tourist areas of London will be quieter than usual. I take found the tube quite early on Saturdays to take my daughter to an activity. It was busier this morning than most Saturdays.

Kings Cross Station 10 minutes ago. Embankment is empty !

I’m on oxford street in London.
picklemewalnuts · 14/03/2020 14:46

Good grief! They must all be in my small local town. It's heaving!

UnaCorda · 14/03/2020 15:29

The real number is much, much higher - because most people who have got it are mild and aren't being tested for it.

Isn't this sort of a good thing? (I'm not saying it's not worrying for those with underlying health conditions or who are elderly, of course.)

lilgreen · 14/03/2020 15:30

Yes but we’ll never know if we’ve had it !

BournvilleGreen · 14/03/2020 15:34

I live in a small touristy area, and it is just dead today. I can hear the butcher's shop closing up early atm. Haven't heard the usual crowds shopping or anything. Last weekend lots were out getting selfies with the spring flowers for their Instagram feeds. No-one at all this week.

BournvilleGreen · 14/03/2020 15:34

@KatherineJaneway we've also been watching you this afternoon!

TobyeBella · 14/03/2020 15:37

Dh and I currently in London for the weekend, been round Covent Garden and Leicester Square since about 11am, its heaving.

KatherineJaneway · 14/03/2020 15:38

@BournvilleGreen

I confess I was also watching myself. When I feel stressed Voyager brings me back to earth ... ironically Grin

We don't even have a general hospital where I live in rural Wales. Huge County and you have to go to neighbouring counties (or even country as most of the specialist hospital services are bought from England).

But my friends with tourist businesses are already worried they'll lose income and are advertising for people to come and self isolate here.

I think eventually it will be everywhere. But delaying it as much as we can is key.

ifonly4 · 14/03/2020 15:56

I'm sure a lot of people have been busy with supermarket/pharmacy trips.

On my own today, so I'd have normally gone for a walk and then into local hotel for a coffee. Saw lady behind the bar there last week coughing into her hand before preparing drinks for everyone. She regularly serves in the day, so I went for my walk and came home for coffee instead.

BeetrootRocks · 14/03/2020 16:00

Is it to do with no tourists

I work in town and the tube is a touch quieter but otherwise business as usual in the week.

Having said that I'm on the tube now and it's fairly quiet, I'd say maybe non work related stuff isn't happening so much and less tourists.

AccountAntsy · 14/03/2020 16:01

I can see the Tyne and Wear metro trains going past from my window and they look a little quieter than a normal Saturday but far from empty. And I got the last spare seat in the coffee shop this morning. And there were 4 families in the kids’ area of the local library. I hope this means the changes people are making are sustainable and can be maintained for longer, because they need to be.

Neacy · 14/03/2020 16:04

My dh was looking at the cctv of Oxford Street and Regent Street this morning, they both looked deserted.

StellaRockafella · 15/03/2020 07:48

Well, I live in the City and walked into town yesterday around 4:30 and everywhere was heaving as usual. Covent Garden was packed despite a few stores (Apple and Glossier) being shut, and Tottenham Court Road was packed too. Went to the Japan Centre (just behind Leicester Square) and although LS wasn’t as busy as I‘d expect for late afternoon/early evening, it was still very busy. Walked home via The Strand and Victoria Embankment, and both were busy too.

I do think the media is cherry picking images and taking pictures very early in the morning. Oxford Street is always deserted on Saturday morning.

I have to go to London Bridge station later and am curious to see how busy that is, ditto the train and the destination I’m going to

SecondaryBurnzzz · 15/03/2020 07:59

We were around Covent Garden and Tottenham Court Road yesterday and loads of people were around including lots of prosecco quaffing hen parties and celebrations. Brandy Mellville (sp?) and Apple store were closed but other than that it was pretty much BAU.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 15/03/2020 08:16

Oxford Street is always quiet at opening time on Saturday. As a Londoner I shop there a lot because it’s convenient to get to and has the largest and most well-stocked basic clothes shops. But yes I imagine that someone from the Home Counties who was originally planning on coming up to town to go shopping might decide not to under the circumstances and I’m sure that’s a huge percentage of their footfall. I’m going to drop into John Lewis on my way home this lunchtime and I might do some food shopping in the basement - sounds like it might be the most civilised place to get it.

KeepYourWigOn · 15/03/2020 08:31

We were in Oxford city centre yesterday. It seemed reasonably busy, but some of the colleges were closed to visitors. I too think the media are being very inventive and selective with the images they post.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 15/03/2020 08:38

Saw Hamilton yesterday and everywhere was much quieter. The theatre was full though. I was asked to be interviewed by The One Show about whether the west end will stay open but declined. The tube was busy at six heading back to St Pancras but everywhere was noticeably less crowded. Lots of masks about.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 15/03/2020 08:42

I agree AintNobodyHereButUsKittens. I love going to Oxford Street for the reasons you outline. It's really convenient to get the tube into Bond Street, cross the road to John Lewis, or walk up to Marylebone High Street for a bookshop or two. There's always Fenwick and Liberty if you want high end fashion inspiration, and Heals and Habitat on TCR if you need anything for your home. Much more fun and variety than going to an airless shopping mall IMO.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 15/03/2020 17:26

Just sprinted up to John Lewis to run an errand and can confirm that it does not resemble the set of 28 Days Later: looking about the street you wouldn’t say “Bloody hell it’s deserted!” But OTOH the tube home was noticeably more empty than normal.
