I have been to London many times before. And I have never seen it so quiet on a sat. It is so empty.

@Becca19962014 Ignore idiots of all kinds, including here. Someone owes you an apology.

Becca19962014 · 14/03/2020 12:50

Yes the hardship budget is for England only. It's been reported in most places as uk because a lot of people see England and think it's the same thing (again don't get me started).

I'd compare here today to what it's like the days before Christmas. Absolutely heaving.

I'm in Kent on the South East coast in a small town and have to bus it into town for the supermarkets and was thinking of not going there from after today. However, bus was very quiet and so was the supermarket. People must be keeping away and it actually felt quite safe.

Interesting point alltoomuchrightnow about IKEA, makes me glad that our schools are open for the time being. I'm going in to Covent Garden this afternoon so will try to spend some money and keep the economy afloat without picking up or passing on any germs.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/03/2020 13:00

Kingston town centre was just as busy as usual this morning.

I would suspect that a quiet Oxford St. is down to far fewer tourists, rather than locals staying at home.

lilgreen · 14/03/2020 13:01

No pasta in Aldi this morning!

lilgreen · 14/03/2020 13:02

Hopefully pollution will reduce with the drastically reduced number of flights and other journeys. Is this Greta’s work?Grin

forrasee · 14/03/2020 13:03

Business as usual in north London, people everywhere!

Suspect Oxford Street is missing it tourists, most Londoners avoid it - especially on a Saturday!

SecondaryBurnzzz · 14/03/2020 13:09

I'm almost looking forward to self isolating - time to do some home improvements and gardening!

Actually if the virus really does take hold, will we be allowed to walk in our local parks?

AccountAntsy · 14/03/2020 13:10

It was busy in my city centre yesterday and my local high street this morning. I think places like Oxford Street will be impacted because of fewer tourists but people are still out and about in their local area. I feel much better for it.

SisterVanHelsing · 14/03/2020 13:11

Same in my south coast town allthegoodusernamesaregone. Plus a CRUISE SHIP has just docked in the port.

YgritteSnow · 14/03/2020 13:12

I'm in West London near Westfield and it's usually rammed with heavy traffic on the way there on a Saturday afternoon but it's very quiet. More like very early morning on a Sunday.

LouQoo · 14/03/2020 13:12

I’ve wondered about local parks. I am planning on stopping the gym on Monday and going for a run in the park in the morning instead.

Honeyroar · 14/03/2020 13:15

Heathrow was incredibly quiet yesterday. Not seen it like that since 9/11.

Bringonspring · 14/03/2020 13:15

Londoners (myself included) have dealt with many things over the last few decades. We are a tough brunch who will rally.

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 13:19

Where I live everywhere but the supermarkets seems to be quieter. Supermarkets are like pre Christmas.

daisychain01 · 14/03/2020 13:22

All we can hope is that this current trend to self-isolate doesn't gradually slip away, the closer we get to the May-June timeframe, when the peak infection rates are forecast across UK. That was the message given by Sir Patrick Valance on Thursday, people could become fatigued if they isolate for several weeks now and find it emotionally difficult to sustain the isolation into the summer when the virulence of the virus is highest.

As long as people are aware of this and are prepared to keep up that effort for another 2-4 months, then it could be as successful as the lockdown in China. It will also ensure the emergency services can care for the elderly and vulnerable groups if there is less strain on resources in May-June peak.

Echobelly · 14/03/2020 13:23

Glad to hear it's empty - means people are taking things seriously.

daisychain01 · 14/03/2020 13:24

It's going to have a massive impact on the economy (= people's income) but the quicker and more orderly we can defeat this damn thing, the less damage when we come out the other side.

PieceOfMaria · 14/03/2020 13:25

I went into a shopping mall with a supermarket attached to it yesterday. Shopping mall empty, supermarket heaving.

billybagpuss · 14/03/2020 13:28

This was my dds tube leading into rush hour yesterday, other dd went to he natural history museum on Wednesday and it was empty 😲

I’m on oxford street in London.
SouthWestmom · 14/03/2020 13:28

Becca I'm really sorry for you, you must be scared. I think it's totally irresponsible though for your specialists to tell you that. Surely no one can know that for sure?

Growingboys · 14/03/2020 13:30

Oxford Street is a dump. Only tourists go there.

BertiesLanding · 14/03/2020 13:36

@todayisnottuesday - It's worth thinking carefully before you say anything.
