Butlins and Coronavirus

Due to take family to Butlins on 23rd. Their website states they have taken extra measures etc. But would you go. AIBU to wait to see they close and then they will refund me my 700 pounds or just go and hope for the best. Has anyone recently come back and if so what precautions are in place.

Well, we have a Haven break booked for the middle of April and we have decided that if we are all well we are going. We will not use the facilities, we will just stay in the caravan and go to the beach /for walks. I can't see why we shouldn't really, we are unlikely to be in direct contact with anyone and we can take our own food. Kids won't be happy that they can't swim or go in the arcade but it's a needs must situation.
I know butlins is different because one of the reasons you go is to use the entertainment and facilities, but you could still use it as a base? Shame if you've paid for Dinner B&B though!

Jespers · 14/03/2020 11:57

No way. Do they not come under mass gatherings anyway? All those people together in the communal areas?

AntMansVan · 14/03/2020 11:58

Butlins is the germiest place in the uk without the corona.

BarbedBloom · 14/03/2020 12:07

My mum has just cancelled

pollysproggle · 14/03/2020 12:08

Husband is taking DS on Monday for two nights and we're all fine with it.
Will take extra precautions and he's packing hand gels, antibac for the room and gloves for the arcade area.

adaline · 14/03/2020 12:10

No.

I imagine places like that will be forced to close over the next couple of weeks anyway. Aren't the government banning large gatherings of people?

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 14/03/2020 12:10

There is absolutely no way I would go.

In my view those prepared to continue as normal are either in denial, ill informed, extremely reckless and/or selfish. Or a combination of these things.

ThePants999 · 14/03/2020 12:21

Due to go in July, so obviously it's wait and see at the moment.

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 14/03/2020 12:26

You can’t live your life in fear

I'm not living my life in fear. I'm quite confident that I have a robust immune system and would be fine even if I caught it.

But I'm concerned that the health service will struggle to cope, as has been seen in Italy, if we don't all take small steps to avoid spreading the virus.

That's why I wouldn't go.

PennyArrowBar · 14/03/2020 12:27

We're due at Spring Harvest in April and am working on the assumption that Butlins will have been shut down by that point on government instructions.

EverythingChanges321 · 14/03/2020 12:34

Nope, I wouldn’t be going anywhere at this point.

I’m in Ireland and our government are taking this very seriously. I’m at home with DH and DS and don’t plan to venture out other than occasional supermarket trips or dog walks along the beach.

I think some people in the U.K. are burying their heads and hoping it won’t affect them but not considering that the children will be carrying the virus and infecting others.

We live in a rural area and I know there are cases of the virus in the next village.

Davidbowiestrousers · 14/03/2020 12:47

Nope we are supposed to be going this week, I've just cancelled. After messaging them and speak over the phone to them, I have zero confidence going.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 14/03/2020 12:52

In my view those prepared to continue as normal are either in denial, ill informed, extremely reckless and/or selfish. Or a combination of these things.

In a collective crisis I'd say we should follow collective (government) advice.

YosemiteMoose · 14/03/2020 13:00

We're at Butlins right now. There are sanitisers at all the entrances, tables and high chairs sprayed down, soft play is cleaned multiple times daily and the toddler rides are wiped down between every ride. The pool and changing rooms are very clean. So I'm pretty comfortable being here, and we dont have specific health concerns in our family. If we were at home we'd still be swimming, going to public places and play areas, and using public transport, so the risk is no different for us.

adaline · 14/03/2020 13:16

Given the number of people who seem to think it's okay to go for a run or to take their kids out tot he park when they're self-isolating, there's no way I would go to somewhere with a huge number of people at the moment!

Barkybarkynutnut · 14/03/2020 13:58

No. We ve been several times and on two occasions we ve come back ill. One time there was an outbreak of D&V so they put in more hand gels around the site. But we all got it bad!! The last (and final time) my kids came back testing positive for Cryprospiridium. They were all sooooo ill and the impact was awful. Had to report to Public Health. Form filling and isolation from school. Bloody awful.

Barkybarkynutnut · 14/03/2020 14:00

Cryptosporidium I mean 🥴

Msmcc1212 · 14/03/2020 16:13

Barky... that’s awful!!! You poor things. No wonder you won’t go back.

Seeleyboo · 14/03/2020 16:40

I am due to go in 2 weeks.going as long as its open

bangheadhere40 · 14/03/2020 17:27

If the park shuts they should refund it says on their site

benadrylcucumberpatch · 14/03/2020 18:13

No, I would not recommend Butlins.

I live near Minehead Butlins and it is a notorious germ breeding ground at the best if times, as it is locally notorious for outbreaks of norovirus, and being unhelpful with guests falling ill and making them leave the site immediately

bangheadhere40 · 14/03/2020 18:29

Will butlins be counted as a mass gathering I wonder?

I'm.due to go to skegness, heard it's normally very clean.

Seeleyboo · 14/03/2020 19:07

I was wondering about the mass gathering question too. I have been several times and never found it dirty.

Witchend · 14/03/2020 21:16

I've been at Butins, Minehead when there was norovirus enough to hit the BBC news.

They did put the whole group in quarantine if one person had it, but they didn't insist people left until it was the end of their holiday.
