Planning to get some reading done if we're not allowed out. Can we share good book suggestions please?

The Chain

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 14/03/2020 08:18

The new Hilary Mantel

it'll keep you busy for a while.

Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel.... (or perhaps not. It's about the global population being decimated by flu...)

Outlander
Escape to the past and compare medicine then/now -alongside the most wonderful hero in fiction😁
(There are many books in the series-should last the whole isolation even if you are a fast reader.)

Iwalkinmyclothing · 14/03/2020 08:30

I'm going to revisit all the dystopian classics tbh. Might not be a good idea bhr I can't resist.

On the beach

Another vote for Station Eleven, eerie subject matter but a brilliant book.

If you want something lighter I have just finished The Man Who Didnt Call and it was excellent. Also have What a Fun Age and Queenie on the shelf for next.

GreyishDays · 14/03/2020 08:36

Jesus Christ, do not read Station 11! Grin

Amazing book. But not for now. What is wrong with you lot? On the beach? Crikey you are made of hard stuff!

I'm planning to read or reread lots of loveliness by Rosamund Pilcher or similar where plucky people face adversity and are all fine and happy afterwards in a beautiful Manor House in cornwall or Scotland...

Start some good series? Rivers of London? Thursday Next?

Rhubarbpeony · 14/03/2020 09:15

Do not read station eleven, it will make you feel so much worse about all this!

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/03/2020 09:18

I'm finally going to read invisible women.

SachaStark · 14/03/2020 09:18

I just finished “The Five”, which is a non-fiction exploration of the lives of the five canonical victims of Jack the Ripper, but with absolutely NO focus on the murderer, just the women and their back stories.

It was very engaging, and I learned a lot about 19thC London. Would highly recommend!

Would also recommend “Queenie”, finished that earlier this week. Not earth-shattering fiction by any means, but an interesting story with some moments of humour.

SachaStark · 14/03/2020 09:19

Ooh, I read “Invisible Women” in December! It was brilliant!

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 17/03/2020 07:21

Erm was thinking more of cheery relaxing reads to take our minds off things gang! 😂

I was planning on dystopian fiction too.
Or the opposite and re-read Jane Austen.
