Are you a panic buyer?

Just that really. I would Just like to know why. There are lots of threads about people finding it ridiculous and not being able to get their normal shop, we're being told there is no need so why have you done it? Can you explain your panic, fear? Especially since its not happening across the board with all food stuffs andjust certain items.
Why toilet roll and not washing up liquid, shower gel etc, why pasta but not pasta sauces c why beans but not tinned soup etc

Can people explain the obsession with extra toilet paper? I would always think that would be the least of the worries in apocalypse and people would stock up on food. You can wash your arse, but you can't magically conjure up dinner from nothing

AnIsolatedSystem · 14/03/2020 10:23

I have been stocking for the past 3 weeks, as I had a bad feeling about this virus. And yes the Gov has said there is no need to panic buy but I do not believe them to put it simply. I have health problems and am looking after myself and my family.

Is that a good enough reason for you OP?

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 14/03/2020 10:23

When there's a shortage people buy it if they see it.

HJWT · 14/03/2020 10:30

I am a 'panic buyer' but not the norm, iv been adding to my weekly shop since the first news article came out on this. Paracetamol for us, kids medicine a few tins etc etc! We had it all before everyone started panic buying.

My DH had the flu Jan 2019 and nearly died he has a weaker immune system so now that it has finally come to the UK and close to our home we need to be extra careful!

People don't realise how much control the government has over us and when shit really does hit the fan like it has in Italy we will be told to stay in our homes, how you all going to nip to the shop then? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not to mention if we have to self isolate for 2 weeks, I know some people say 'can I still go for a run or nip to the shop' well I won't be that selfish so at least I can feed my children if that happens!

Wafflehouse · 14/03/2020 10:31

sleepingpup oh I agree that that is panic buying but I think some people have this idea that panic buying is just people loading multiple trollies with stacks of tins and mountains of pasta, of which I have not seen, and aren’t aware that we are all contributing to the problem. I do laugh (bitterly) when all these people come through the till and tell me I’m in the best place though as whenever I finish a shift the shelves are bare. 20 years in retail in one form or another and I have never seen anything like it. I have mentioned to almost every single person to please remember the food bank donation point, it’s falling on deaf ears though.

sleepingpup · 14/03/2020 10:32

I 'panic bought' a 28 roll pack back about a month ago.

Usually we have a just in time buying system.

But if I have to be stuck with The 4 animals that are my kids without loo roll for any length of time I am Not taking ANY chances.

It would be the last straw for me! I'm just not cool or laid back enough to be wiping my arse on my hand or leaves or whatever. Some luxuries please!

Thelaughinggnome123 · 14/03/2020 10:33

I'm a panic buyer not as in clearing shelves, but just buying a little extra in case we have to self isolate tie a week. I'd never clear a shelf only take an extra item or buying a pack of loo roll when I had a few spare.
But this is done in a quiet panic.

HJWT · 14/03/2020 10:33

In home bargains the other day they had hand gel , it was 2 per customer and was gone by lunch time! So even if people only buy a couple of extra things each the shelves soon empty...

Thelaughinggnome123 · 14/03/2020 10:33

I mean a few spare rolls not a few spare packs!!

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 14/03/2020 10:35

Fair enough😂

Buyitinbamboo · 14/03/2020 10:37

I guess I've panic brought to a certain extent. Not like what you see on social media but for example they had none of my usual toilet roll, I had 4 rolls left. Usually I would just go back another day but this time I brought a pack of 9 that I wouldn't usually buy. I've brought a few tins of soup and some frozen veg that I wouldn't usually buy. I've practiced making oat milk and my own bread so I know I can get by for a few days.

I did quite a big food bank shop which was more than I usually donate but thought there will be people struggling more

AnIsolatedSystem · 14/03/2020 10:39

I think we will be Italy No2 in a couple of weeks. Would be foolish NOT to prepare.

CassandraGoth · 14/03/2020 10:40

I hope all the selfish panic buyers get Coronavirus

Buyitinbamboo · 14/03/2020 10:41

I forgot to say my reasoning. We are the type that buys exactly what we need for a week..come friday evening there is nothing left. I wanted a few days extra food incase we need to self isolate

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 14/03/2020 10:42

They very likely will. And so will you Grin

ladylunchalot · 14/03/2020 10:44

I normally get shopping on a weekly basis but after hearing that Ireland were closing schools it did make me panic a little incase the same happens here.
I went to Tesco and got about 2 weeks worth of shopping and freezer stuff. Managed to get more toilet rolls as well - dh has Crohn's and I really don't want to run out.
I work for NHS and am terrified of catching Corona virus and passing it on to dh who has just started on immuno suppressants. I'm trying to limit going out as much as possible hence getting so much shopping at once.

makingmammaries · 14/03/2020 10:45

It’s really easy to store loo roll. And really unpleasant to be stuck without it. So why not buy some extra if your cash flow permits? You know it will get used. Nobody gets sick of the same type of loo roll. The same does not apply to foodstuffs.

I confess, I have stockpiled loo roll and UHT milk. 7 of us in the family and the milk consumption is huge.

The woman in front of me in the queue this morning said she was doing a big shop “because we don’t know what will happen”. It is uncertainty that is driving the panic buying.

SudokuQueen · 14/03/2020 10:46

I've refilled my fridge freezer and cupboards for the month, but I do that every month. Well I did that last week. Glad I did though as I've spent the last week at home ill. I probably looked like a panic buyer though as I bought more painkillers too as my partner had come down with the same illness before me.

Didn't just buy pasta or toilet roll. Grin I was lucky to get toilet roll though.

themarkofthemaker · 14/03/2020 10:47

Most people wouldn't consider themselves "panic buyers" but have intentionally "stocked up" on household goods, therefore causing shortages.

AnIsolatedSystem · 14/03/2020 10:48

At least we can self isolate in comfortWink

sleepingpup · 14/03/2020 10:52

Exactly the same as us. That is why we have "panic bought" .

Not sure what else I should have done to prepare.

There is a lot of sweeping stupid judgement.

And I feel very sorry for the people that can't get a bit extra in. Which is why I "panic bought'' a bit extra for the food bank Bin. Really important to do that right now.

ThePlantsitter · 14/03/2020 10:56

I got a pretty comprehensive Ocado order. Enough to last 2 weeks if we have to self isolate and the kids have to cook for themselves because we're ill.

I don't consider that panic buying. But if I had gone to the actual shops I suspect it would be very v difficult NOT to catch the panic because I'm a human being and that's what human beings are like. I don't consider myself superior to other humans.

Remember that old joke about the Kipling poem
'if you can keep your head when all around are losing theirs
It's possible you haven't fully grasped the situation'.

EvilPea · 14/03/2020 10:58

World health organisation said to get a few bits in.

Barbararara · 14/03/2020 11:03

Watching the situation in China made me assess how our family would cope with a quarantine or a lockdown situation and I started to buy with that in mind.

Watching Italy, I realised that I’d only thought through situations where I was healthy and capable of running a household so I stocked up on child friendly supplies too.

I don’t consider it panic buying, but I have altered my purchasing and storing behaviour in response to unfolding world events. Mind you I do something similar every year in Oct/Nov to avoid the crowds in Dec.

I have a list of every item we ever buy, which I consult when I’m making a normal shopping list. So I’ve been buying the things my family actually needs like more shower gel and an extra roll of tinfoil, rather than blindly shoving toilet roll in my trolley because the internet said so. And I’m definitely not jamming myself in a confined space with crowds of people to strip shelves when a pandemic is declared.

lynsey91 · 14/03/2020 11:03

Those of you who only buy enough food for a week, can I ask why. Is it because of the cost or no storage space?

Do you not worry that something could happen that means you can't get to a shop - snow, flooding, car breakdown, illness. If you are a single parent what if you child is ill and you can't go out and leave them?

Also what if for some reason you were short of money and could not afford to shop one week?

I could never have so little food in the house. It would bother me massively
