Are you a panic buyer?

Just that really. I would Just like to know why. There are lots of threads about people finding it ridiculous and not being able to get their normal shop, we're being told there is no need so why have you done it? Can you explain your panic, fear? Especially since its not happening across the board with all food stuffs andjust certain items.
Why toilet roll and not washing up liquid, shower gel etc, why pasta but not pasta sauces c why beans but not tinned soup etc

I bought some propagators recently for my balcony flowers, and had popped a few variations into my amazon cart to compare (then saved them for later).

They have now going up by 50% since yesterday. Are people planning to grow their own food?

SerenDippitty · 17/03/2020 10:53

No. We went to Tesco on Sunday and bought enough to fill our two (fridge) freezers but did not buy large quantities of any one item. We haven’t been hoarding sanitiser ( had some bar soap) or toilet paper though I have ordered two packs of 12 rolls from Amazon which will bring our total stock to 30 rolls.

CorianderLord · 17/03/2020 10:56

Not really, I've thrown an extra can or two of beans in the trolley because we're vegan so our options are more limited but I mostly have loads in the house

InSomeKindOfWakingNightmare · 17/03/2020 11:00

I do not think any of us will have enough supplies, this lockdown needs to last for around 18 months until a vaccine is made

CorianderLord · 17/03/2020 11:28

Although maybe it's not people panic buying but everyone suddenly grabbing an extra tin or two that's doing it. If 10 people do that then that's the shelf wiped. So maybe I am a panic buyer?

Clockworkprincess · 17/03/2020 12:05

Its madness with all the empty shelves. At the moment we can only afford to shop weekly and we had to completely rearrange meal plans. Instead of pasta dishes etc ds is now on nuggets and chips etc every night, he's gutted even though we're trying to persuade him its homemade McDonald's. Toilet rolls are impossible to find but thankfully i managed to get a twelve pack last week which will last us three weeks now.

JollyAndBright · 17/03/2020 12:16

Not me but a colleague of mine went and did a panic buy... three times.

On one shop she almost cleared the shelves of certain things,
She has bought a huge amount of antibacterial wipes, hand soap and cleaner, toilet rolls, pasta, rice, tinned tomatoes, lentils, flour, eggs, bread and frozen vegetables.

I have told her she is part of the problem but she won’t listen.
She is pregnant and has severe asthma, she also have a DC with an autoimmune disorder, catching the CV would be very dangerous for them so she decided to stock pile and basically not go outside or see another person at all for the foreseeable future.
She’s withdrawn her DC from school and is working from home.
She even put a notice up on her front door to say please don’t knock we are in quarantine.

I can understand her logic but I think she’s handled it awfully and is worrying herself more.

Liverbird77 · 17/03/2020 12:49

I am so, so pissed off with how things are going. Went to Aldi today to get some nappies. Just our usual shop. None left. When I walked past the shop later, people were queuing to get in!
There was a horrible atmosphere in there. I really feel things are turning now

Wishing allergic skin reaction on everyone who emptied shelves with handwashes in all the shops.
Have you not washed hands before?
Unbelievable.

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 17/03/2020 13:58

I have been panic buying just a little bit, if I'm honest. My mum is 86 and lives alone. She has Alzheimer's. My worry is that if I get ill or DP or one of the kids gets ill, and we all have to self isolate, how would she eat? So I have filled her freezer with ready meals and bread, bought her some tins of soup, extra porridge oats, loo rolls and so on. I've warned her to stay indoors because I know, come Thursday, she'll be chomping at the bit to go and buy her weekly magazines!

Poppydaisies · 17/03/2020 14:01

Well, many people are having to prepare to isolate themselves for two weeks so of course they will need to buy more food than normal. But that's called planning ahead (rather than panicking).

Lordfrontpaw · 17/03/2020 14:24

And all they had left was sweet potatoes 🤢. 2 potato aisles, and this was all that was left.

Not much in the pasta and rice aisle either.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 17/03/2020 14:29

@Lordfrontpaw there was no chicken in mine and people looked distraught.
Luckily my foreign arse eats differently so I had no issue to choose in the abundance of duck😂
Also. "Foreign" veg.
The world isles are pretty full except pasta and rice.

However, and this actually made me quite angry too. It's not only normal pasta which is gone. It is also gluten free pasta. Not bread, not sauces or any other products. Not lasagna sheets. Just spaghetti and tge other pasta gone. I genuinely think this was not celiacs emptying it, because EVERYTHING else was there...

MegaClutterSlut · 17/03/2020 14:29

I've only bought a few extra bits so far. I never intended on hoarding but when the shelves are being stripped bare daily I buy things when I see them or I won't be able to get anything if I left it until I actually needed it

Lordfrontpaw · 17/03/2020 14:31

We didn’t have any chicken either - some duck and pork bit very little of any other meat. And of course no loo roll!

Helenj1977 · 17/03/2020 14:38

I'm a prepper. I've been preparing since January.

I've bought things with a long shelf life and things we'll need day to day.

Toilet roll is one of those as it's an essential. Pasta lasts and is filling, tins of fruit and uht milk. I have a 1 year old so need to know she can have milk.

Everyone laughed at me when I started this. I'm glad I'm a prepper but sad I'll actually need this stuff

Helenj1977 · 17/03/2020 14:39

And, I only ordered one extra pack of things a week. I haven't bought in bulk.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 17/03/2020 14:39

If you have a slowcooker, grab the duck! There are usually the rice pancakes next to it. Grab hoison, cucumber and spring onion. You will need 5 spice.
Rub the duck with 5 spice inside out, really properly.
Pop in a slowcooker. 6 hours on high. I flip it 3 times with it being breast down after last flip.

Then you cut it in half, pop it under the grill and voilà! Crispy chinese duck!
All in all, you will have 4 portions for about 11 quid including electricity😁 much cheaper than the premade ones and super tasty. You can also keep the fat and juices to use in stir-fry and egg fried rice because it has the 5 spice in. Just pop it in a freezer in ice cube box or similar

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 17/03/2020 14:41

Or! Rub the duck with mix of salt, pepper and caraway. Put onion inside for extra taste. I put bit of sauerkraut too. Yum. Properly wrap and slow roast until the meat goes off the noes on legs.
Serve with sauerkraut or red cabbage (or both!) And dumplings. You can use gnocchi too.

Curiosity101 · 17/03/2020 15:14

I always keep an 'extra' of things in stock anyway and always have done. It's a habit I got from my grandma. For example, we're a 2 adult 1 child household and have 2 toilets in our house but on average we probably have a minimum of 12 toilets rolls in the house. We have 5 in the downstairs toilet and 7 upstairs. Plus I normally buy the 16 - 24 packs as soon as we finish a pack. The same goes for having a well-stocked cupboard. We have UHT milk (just in case we run out of fresh milk and can't get to the shops before breakfast). We have 4 weeks' worth of baby formula because it just isn't worth the risk of running out of the only thing that baby can have and even under normal circumstances shops sometimes run out of it.

However... I do reckon I might technically be a panic buyer. I've not bulk bought anything, but I've definitely adjusted my shopping habits as a result of what's been going on. For certain necessities, I have bought 2 packs rather than 1, or 1 where ordinarily I'd have allowed our stocks to get lower before replacing it (things like nappies, UHT milk, hand wash).

@BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser

Thanks for the tips!

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 17/03/2020 16:02

@KatherineJaneway always happy to share duck cooking ideasGrin

I do wonder what people eat the pasta, rice and lentils with because spices shelves were full.... Bland crisis living?

KatherineJaneway · 17/03/2020 21:50

@BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser

I noticed that too, no tinned tomatoes but the spice racks were full!

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 17/03/2020 22:17

So odd these shopping patterns. So fascinating. I would LOVE to read some study on it later.
Why? How? Wtf?
