Are you a panic buyer?

Just that really. I would Just like to know why. There are lots of threads about people finding it ridiculous and not being able to get their normal shop, we're being told there is no need so why have you done it? Can you explain your panic, fear? Especially since its not happening across the board with all food stuffs andjust certain items.
Why toilet roll and not washing up liquid, shower gel etc, why pasta but not pasta sauces c why beans but not tinned soup etc

No one will admit to being that selfish op. However my aunts has been doing. There is only her and my uncle and the amount they have is obscene. We are talking 40 bottles of hand gel. 200 toilet rolls etc.
They have no medical issues either
Yes I have told them what I think of them and so has my mum. I have also said when the vulnerable girl with loads of health issues I look after as my job runs out of hand gel and her poor mum has to spend mega bucks to get more I will be banging her door down.

I finally found out what do people put on their pasta. It's obviously ketchup. Pics of empty ketchup shelves...
Can't survive without ketchup😂

RhymingRabbit3 · 14/03/2020 20:27

Nobody thinks they're a panic buyer.

"I just bought one or two extra because everyone else was"
"I picked up an extra couple of packs just in case"
"There were only 3 left on the shelf so I took them all because I worried I wouldn't be able to get them next time"

There is always an excuse about why they're entitled to it and sensible for doing so. When everyone who picks up an extra1 or 2 of something "just in case" is contributing to the problem.

MrsFezziwig · 14/03/2020 21:03

deliveries are still being made

and of course delivery drivers are resistant to coronavirus, so no chance there will be a shortage of them when there are potentially ten times the number of people self isolating as there are now.

Pretty sure they're putting antibacterial handwash on it.

Rosecatter · 14/03/2020 21:13

I'm utterly baffled by it all. I didn't go to the supermarket today, I went to the pubSmile. Although I'm wondering if I'll be able to do that by next week....

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 14/03/2020 21:21

@PotholeParadise Grin
"Day 11 of self quarantine diary. News say all is safe. I think they are lying. They must work for Russians and want us all dead. Food stock are still ok. The fistfight with Karen from down the road over the last 2 bags of pasta was worth it. I have run out of oregano to mix into my ketchup. However, I found a rosemary and lemon antibacterial handwash and well... I did... It tastes great after you get used to it! I've been eating it for 6 days and am ok. Ian on the other hand... There is something wrong with him. I think he lost it. He keeps saying the handwash eating is making me delusional and paranoid. Hah. As if. He is the problem. Wants to go outside! He is so naive and trusts the Russian bots on TV. Well I won't let him kill us all. Hopefully he will calm down soon so I can take the chains of him"

MerryDeath · 14/03/2020 21:26

no but i always run a healthy stock pile of all sorts of this as i am totally freaked out by the idea of any kind of breakdown in the chain. i can't bear the thought of not being able to feed my son although i have been at it like this for 6-8 years. i've also got things like a bread maker as i love the reassurance of always being able to make my own. soon i will have a flock of chickens in the garden and my veg patch getting going ☺️

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/03/2020 21:34

What level defines a panic buyer?
I've bought 2 extra tins of beans, 2 extra packs of microwave rice, one extra pack of pasta, 3 l of long life milk, some tuna tins which we already have in and one pack of paracetamol. And a few different tins of fruit and some cat food.
They are being kept in a bag separate so as not to be dipped into and just used up in case we need a few bits if we have to self isolate. But I haven't gone overboard or stripped shelves by any means.

Day 16

Dear diary,

So glad I nutted Sharon for that tea chest of bog roll before we holed up, as I've gone from being all bunged up to needing the toilet a lot. I don't understand what's happening, but I hear that diarrhoea was a symptom of Covid-19. Maybe it's in the water! Ian continues to refuse to eat his pasta sauce and tells me not to. So ungrateful. As soon as we are done with all this, I will LTB.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 14/03/2020 22:42

@PotholeParadise

Day 21

Dear Diary. Ian decided to up the game by pretending to be unconscious. I am still trying to figure out how did the Russians get to him. Maybe some electro waves? Probably the TV! That's where the bots are. I am starting to worry because my favourite pasta sauce will run out soon. Problem with the handwash flavouring is that your tastebuds get used to it so you have to add more.
Oh, Ian. So childish. I am onto you. You can't hold your pulse for ever.

brassbrass · 15/03/2020 14:11

Yep as I expected, a load of wanky excuses.

You don't need months and months worth of stuff. Just a couple of weeks which does not equate to 60 bog rolls and kilos of pasta and rice etc.

If you think we'll be stuck indoors for longer than that there will be much much bigger problems than food to worry about when bins aren't being collected, utilities aren't working properly, water supply and so on. Or are you imagining all these people will carry on exempt from isolation somehow so you can sit at home gloating about your 'prepping' and 'organisation'?

All you are doing by hoarding is forcing people to make multiple trips to the supermarket in the hope of getting essentials like toilet roll. It was busier than at Christmas today. You are actually actively encouraging infection. If everyone was able to get a sensible amount they could all stay home comfortably in the knowledge that when supplies are required they will be able to get them. But that isn't the case as we now don't have a clue when we will be able to get these items. The bog roll thing has really pissed me off. People will be using kitchen roll and wipes etc and flushing these down the sewers causing all manner of secondary problems. Totally unnecessary.

Irrational cowardly selfish thinking.

User12879923378 · 15/03/2020 14:15

I bought some extra stuff around Brexit time in October and I bought some extra stuff earlier in Feb, but I ordered in bulk from bulk suppliers online who were comfortably in stock. I didn't go into a supermarket that orders on the basis it expects people to buy 1-2 of each thing and clear entire shelves.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 15/03/2020 14:25

I am still after my eggs. No luck🙄

HunterHearstHelmsley · 15/03/2020 14:28

I had to buy three packs of nine loo rolls today. I was shopping for three households. Some utter fucking halfwit tried to berate me.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 15/03/2020 14:35

I wonder when will it calm down. People must run out of loo roll storage soon!

ShirleyPhallus · 15/03/2020 14:48

Someone posted on another thread about how her mum had been a “prepper” and what anxiety it had given her in later life.

Someone else had posted that they “pick up an extra pack of paracetamol and ibuprofen every few weeks” just in case.

Baffling honestly.

Christmastreedown · 15/03/2020 15:15

I didnt start stockpiling until I realised I was too late for hand gel and disinfectant products. Now I have enough bog rolls (from Amazon last week) and managed to pick up some tinned food left on the shelves on friday evening. No soup, peanut butter, pasta, flour and yeast but can live without. I think we are ok for 2 weeks isolation (2 adults, 2 teens and 6 yr old).

Fluffybutter · 15/03/2020 15:42

@HunterHearstHelmsley people aren’t psychic, a lot of people would have assumed you were stock piling as most people are !

peacebypeace · 15/03/2020 16:41

I'm not. I like to have a spare of everything I use regularly (e.g. shampoo, conditioner, shower gel etc). We have plenty of food in the freezer and store cupboard but no more than usual. We have a few spare toilet rolls but we always buy these in bulk, as it is cheaper to do so.

Rubyupbeat · 15/03/2020 16:55

@prepprpig
Only out of interest, why do you prep anyway.
I know my mum and her generation had a store cupboard, emergency foods, but didn't think people stocked up like that nowadays.
As though, after this fiasco, I think I will start a store, or prep cupboard.

speakout · 15/03/2020 17:08

I am a prepper. Have been for decades.
For many reasons.

StillDisappointed · 15/03/2020 17:12

I'm not panic buying, but there's definitely an air of 'oh I'll get an extra one/couple more' just in case the next time I need one of whatever, it's all gone.

So I buy two 3kg packs of pasta instead of one, or 3 bottles of bleach instead of two.
I'm not a selfish bastard though and if (after taking what I need) there's only one left on the shelf, I'll leave it.

Redyoyo · 15/03/2020 17:16

I've bought extra while i have money, if my dh can't go to work he won't get paid, my wages will cover the bills but not food and extras.

Lordfrontpaw · 15/03/2020 17:21

I’m just a ‘pissed off’ buyer as there is no bloody loo roll around here! I am having (TMI - avert your eyes of of a squeamish disposition) The Shining of all periods and am getting through rather a lot at the moment.
