Are you a panic buyer?

Just that really. I would Just like to know why. There are lots of threads about people finding it ridiculous and not being able to get their normal shop, we're being told there is no need so why have you done it? Can you explain your panic, fear? Especially since its not happening across the board with all food stuffs andjust certain items.
Why toilet roll and not washing up liquid, shower gel etc, why pasta but not pasta sauces c why beans but not tinned soup etc

@Alexashutup - so you have joined in the panic buying then - because you (and many others) have done this it all contributes to empty shelves which creates panic and selfishness which perpetuates the problem

Nameofchanges · 14/03/2020 16:10

‘Whah is the difference between a panic buyer and a prepper? You’re both buying things you don’t need yet for a future situation “just in case”’

The difference between a panic buyer and a prepper is that preppers prep when things are in good supply, so that they can avoid shopping during times of high demand.

There are no actual shortages of anything. There are distribution problems due to current demand. So anyone having to go out shopping in the last week is contributing to the problem. Every day the shops are fully restocking and every day the stocks are being fully depleted in some shops due to increased demand.

After seeing the empty shelves I have now bought 24 loo rolls, would normally buy 2 packs of 9, 1 bottle of calpol, 4 packs of adult painkillers and easy stuff to cook in the freezer (enough for about a week max). I've also bought 5 tins of soup and 3 packs of super noodles. These are all things I wouldn't normally buy so if that's panic buying I'll admit to it.

sleepingpup · 14/03/2020 16:13

I have contributed to the issue @Amousetookastroll . As I said earlier I have bought more than my usual weekly shop in preparation for having to self isolate with my family. I don't usually have a big stock in.

Can I genuinely ask when would you plan to shop for supplies if you had to self isolate?

TruculentandFarty · 14/03/2020 16:16

Not a panic buyer, but last month I bought a bunch of stuff for work (I buy office supplies) predicting that it was going to be hard to find stuff. As a result we have a small amount of extra hand sanitiser, wipes. masks (we use them for the machine shop) and tissues that would be hard to find right now. I told my boss that I was ordering a little extra because I anticipated panic buying. I'm really glad I did so.

I did the same for home, two bags of dog food instead of one, two boxes of toilet paper, not one. I did this before it got crazy. We cleaned out the freezer and bought meat and frozen fruit/veg. We don't have a lot extra, we have a comfortable amount. We live in earthquake country so we are meant to have extra available.

TruculentandFarty · 14/03/2020 16:19

Oh and to answer your question, yes we bought pasta sauce, washing up liquid and soup. Regular amounts.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/03/2020 16:20

I've panic bought 48 Andrex from Amazon, they arrived this week.Ive got extra kitchen rolls,a few soup, instant mash, tuna, tinned veg etc.Ive also got 4 packets of paracetamol and an extra calpol.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/03/2020 16:22

And I've also bought uht milk

Neacy · 14/03/2020 16:23

No not a panic buyer, my cupboards are well stocked, dh had open heart surgery 3 weeks ago so I did stock up on hand sanitizer and anti bacterial wipes/sprays, before he went into hospital.

He was also given his medication when he left hospital and this included Paracetamol, so very grateful for this.

Dh also suffers from Crohns, so was a bit worried about toilet rolls, I had 9 delivered with my online shop, was down to my last 2, then son came for a visit this morning with a pack of 4, he said he felt like a criminal as he had 2 packs of 4, 1 pack for us and 1 pack for him.

EmmaBridgewater20 · 14/03/2020 16:23

For God’s sake @PrincessHoneysuckle how big are your 💩!!!! I’ve got IBS and it would take us about 6 months to get through that!!!!

lynzpynz · 14/03/2020 16:25

I freely admit to hoarding, and clearing my local tesco of, large amounts of tomato flavoured crisps.

I am pregnant and obsessed with them if that excuses me.

Does this make me a panic buyer?!

Nixee2231 · 14/03/2020 16:26

I'm doing a bit of half and half. I'm not buying 20 tins of beans like some people but 2-3 extra of some essential items. I'm not really worried about things being out of stock, but I am worried that if I get sick and can't do my weekly shop, I wont have much to eat if I don't stock extras.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 14/03/2020 16:26

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend

I’ve got enough food and cleaning products to last 6-8 weeks, haven’t stockpiled or panicked purchased.

The only thing I have stockpiled is cat food. I have 6 cats and I worry I won't be able to get 36 tins and a box of crunchies which is what they have every week and cat milk too.

SilverOtter · 14/03/2020 16:29

We normally go to our village shop for bits every day, so now I'm just picking up extra things each time. Plus a lot of the stuff I'd normally buy, I can't because it's all gone (pasta, pesto, flour etc).
I didn't panic buy, but now I'm getting a bit scared that when we eventually do run out of things like loo roll we won't be able to get any moreSad

PotholeParadise · 14/03/2020 16:29

I know I'm not a panic buyer as I have merrily walked past the handwash, toilet tissue and painkiller shelves without buying any, and left these high-demand items for the people who do need them.

Sh05 · 14/03/2020 16:30

Reading this thread and seeing the action of some shoppers has got me thinking that I may not be as prepared as I think I am!

Spied · 14/03/2020 16:32

I'm buying extras while out and about in town. The odd pack of paracetamol, couple of packs of super noodles etc.
Just done our 'normal' weekly shop and bought exactly what we would have bought normally.

Sh05 · 14/03/2020 16:37

That's what I've done, just bought my normal Saturday shop but my cupboard under the stairs is always stocked with some extras, so rice and tinned tomatoes, dry lentils and such. Plus whenever I cook meat I always freeze a portion so my freezer is full-ish. We do a lot of baking so always have flour plus I make chapatis so also have wholemeal flour in

HarrietThePi · 14/03/2020 16:39

I think the news about panic buyers has caused people to panic buy. People are buying stuff because they think everyone else is and want to get what they can before it all runs out.

I haven't panic bought or stock piled but my dp did buy a 24 pack of toilet roll. We usually just get the six packs. I don't think that's too excessive though, and probably will be handy to have as the shops keep running out.

However, he also bought a variety of tinned foods which has completely filled our cupboard. That was excessive. And annoying. I recently did a big clear out of that cupboard and now things are back to falling out every time I open it. Plus he didn't get anything that I like to eat, so if we do get holed up for two weeks I'll be ordering deliveries for myself anyway.

speakout · 14/03/2020 16:39

Certainly stockpiling. OH is just back from Lidl and very little food left.
No meat, no milk, no tinned veg.
I will be out early tomorrow morning at 8am to the supermarket, as I am concerned for the next few days fresh produce.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 14/03/2020 16:40

Tbh at this point the best prep you can do is MMA training for when you try to go shopping...

Where are you? It's Sunday. Late opening here

HarrietThePi · 14/03/2020 16:41

Oh and I went in to Sainsbury's today to get some pasta because we're getting low. The whole pasta and rice aisle was empty.
