How many people actually understand what a lockdown would involve?

Bearbehind · 13/03/2020 21:07

I realise there’s outrage about our governments handling of this but, on one hand we appear to have countless people insisting schools must shut now

And on the other hand we have people who-

  • think they could still participate in their hobbies
  • think a lock down would be over in a fortnight
  • think they could go on a cheap holiday while the kids are off

How many people genuinely understand locking down now will be for months and you won’t be classed as ‘exceptional’ or ‘special’ - you’ll be expected to actually stay inside for the duration otherwise it achieves nothing.

@Chloemol

Then there’s the armed services, who would be required to make sure idiots, like many on here who think self isolation allows them to walk dogs, go running etc, comply.

Before you start calling people idiots, you might want to check your own comprehension.

Self-isolation is for people who have displayed potential symptoms of the virus. No, they should not be walking dogs and going running.

That isn't what this thread is discussing. It's talking about "lockdown", or enforced social distancing, of an entire population, whether they have displayed potential symptoms or not. As several people who are actually experiencing this right now have pointed out, it does not mean people are permanently confined to their homes and, in fact, both walking dogs and going running are allowed, with certain restrictions.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/03/2020 00:08

We stay in and watch Netflix

That'll be one of the first to go if all non-essential workers are made to stay at home.

Neves7 · 14/03/2020 00:09

Lockdown means whatever the applicable authorities that decide It means.

Could be anything: prohibiting travel between cities, setting curfews or preventing anyone from leaving their house/compound without express permission.

Goods delivery could be ok with social distancing or not. Small groups could be ok or not. Businesses could be closed or just restricted by social distancing. Going for a remote run/cycle could be ok or prohibited.

Enforcement could be left to the individual or community or police/military.

Teabag37 · 14/03/2020 00:44

You should start preparing for eventual lockdown, I live in Italy & 10 days ago we would never have thought we would find ourselves in the situation we are in today.......you have to stay at home...you can't take the kids to the parks,shops,bars....these are all closed...you can't even visit friends or relatives (unless an emergency)...you have to carry a signed certificate with you to justify your reason for leaving the house (shopping, doctors etc)we can't find masks or hand sanitisers.....but something needs to be done very soon to try & contain the virus

kateandme · 14/03/2020 01:27

my cousin works with families in china.she and her collegues are more concerned than ever over the mental health fallout of their lockdown.attempted suicides in her area have already increased by 103% .the children who havent been out the house for months are reverting inwardly.elderly have tried to end their lives.the stats you dont see are not of the death from the virus itself but from the ripple effect it has had and those deaths are increasing extremely rapidly alongside the spread of the virus. she has been shocked beyond belief at the efffect on mental health it has had.and these are on people used to following a draconian rule.

SubjectMatterExpert · 14/03/2020 01:29

Yeah, I don’t think anyone knows what it involves. Because it’s never happened before

Are you suggesting that as a reason it shouldn’t happen?

SubjectMatterExpert · 14/03/2020 01:31

We stay in and watch Netflix

That'll be one of the first to go if all non-essential workers are made to stay at home.

Download a LOAD of stuff, quick

Flyingpurplepeopleeater · 14/03/2020 07:16

Self isolation and lockdown are different.
And lockdown is not one size fits all, chinas lock down didnt look like Italys lockdown, and that has progressed from how it first started.
I dont think people are being selfish, lockdown, self isolation and social isolation are all terms I hadn't even heard if in this context until a month ago.
The pp in Italy has explained that Amazon are delivering - she needed paper to WFH and to keep her child amused somehow after 3 weeks of being mainly indoors.

Alwayscheerful · 14/03/2020 08:26

Surely Lockdown will vary from country to country and each government will vary the rules. In China Iockdown eventually meant actually welding people in their homes but started off less draconian, ie stay in your house and send one designated family member out for food every 3 days, when stronger measures were needed the government welded people in and dropped off food parcels. Or so it seems.

justasking111 · 14/03/2020 09:43

Might be worth uploading e books

Bearbehind · 14/03/2020 09:45

I have horses. They are around 5 miles away from my home, I'll be dammed if I'm not getting there to check on them every day. Symptomatic or not! I'm not abandoning them. I don't have anyone else to help with them and they are in an isolated field in a very rural area.

Posts like this are exactly the issue I’m trying to highlight

If you have symptoms of CV then you’ve already been told by our government to stay inside for 7 days but people like the PP who said this are clearly going to ignore that because they decide their circumstances are special

The more strict any ‘lockdown’ the more that’s not allowed and I’m sure the more people will find ways to avoid doing as they’ve been told

I realise that even in the most extreme lock down situation that key workers have to get to work

The difference is, I don’t consider a ‘key worker’ to be someone who delivers a takeaway or some craft supplies to my door but others clearly do

@ItsGoingTibiaK. I am talking about lockdown, millions of workers will still be required to run this country in a lockdown, unlike China where we are being told by posters that only shop workers are going to work. And as we’d can see from Italy it’s not working as people still go out to meet friends etc.

Lockdown will only work if it is truly a lockdown, ie you stay in your house like self isolation so the virus has nothing to attach to and hopefully dies out. But that is simply not going to happen

Op so your saying I should let my animals starve? Or die because they got ill, or trapped???

Bearbehind · 14/03/2020 10:52

Op so your saying I should let my animals starve? Or die because they got ill, or trapped???

No, I’m saying if you are told to self isolate because you have symptoms than that’s what you do

If that means finding or paying for someone to check the horses then so be it

No idea what would happen in the event of a full lockdown but presumable people would be put before animals regardless of whether that’s right or not

This isn’t personal to you though, it’s the principle that in this country people often decide rules don’t apply to them, particularly if those rules inconvenience them, and this situation makes that even more apparent

This isn’t personal to you though, it’s the principle that in this country people often decide rules don’t apply to them, particularly if those rules inconvenience them, and this situation makes that even more apparent the ability to do this is EXACTLY what keeps people alive in emergency situations. Use your head. Checking horses is not going to spread virus.

DoubleAction · 14/03/2020 11:00

At the moment we have huge numbers of people deciding that they're not going to follow the rules, convinced that they know better. It the Chief Medical Officer is right, you've all ruined his plan by starting to self isolate and cancel events too soon.

So you can't follow the rules because youb think you know better, why do you expect others to be different?

ShanghaiDiva · 14/03/2020 11:04

@Chloemol
Office workers went back to work in my city on 24th Feb. Many people are back and some never stopped work eg dh’s factory continued operation.
At the height of restrictions in my city supermarkets and pharmacies were open and other people were working to provide essential services eg deliveries to supermarkets, rubbish collection etc.

daisypond · 14/03/2020 11:06

so your saying I should let my animals starve? Or die because they got ill, or trapped???
In China, in their extreme lockdown, this is what happened. Animals starved to death.

Bearbehind · 14/03/2020 11:12

Checking horses is not going to spread virus.

Except, in the example given, the PP lives 5 miles away from the horses so presumably travels there by car that presumably needs fuel at some point for example so it could very well spread the virus

OP posts:
5zeds · 14/03/2020 11:36

So you think it’s ok for someone to go to the shops every three days (which probably needs a car) but somehow MORE dangerous to drive to a field? Buying petrol involves no physical contact and my car has a range of 320 miles on what’s in the tank now, so a couple of months in this scenario.

daisypond · 14/03/2020 11:54

Buying petrol involves no physical contact
How do you put the petrol in or pay without touching anything?

5zeds · 14/03/2020 12:03

You put on a plastic glove and pay at pump. Though let’s face it 5 miles a day isn’t going to require much refuelling.

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 12:11

Bear I feel your being obtuse for the sake of it.

A lone person isn't going to infect anyone just going to their horses, alone via car... And people should have full tanks.. I got mine filled full two weeks ago and I keep it topped up..

compulsiveliar2019 · 14/03/2020 12:46

Op where am I going to find this magic person to feed and check on them that isn't also locked down.

For what it's worth I have an electric car so don't need to ever go to a petrol station!

Afternoon, everyone. Just a reminder that we may have to take this thread down if it turns into a bunfight (or a dry pasta and bog roll fight) so please keep all posts civil, even if you're disagreeing with others on the thread. Thanks.
