How many people actually understand what a lockdown would involve?

Bearbehind · 13/03/2020 21:07

I realise there’s outrage about our governments handling of this but, on one hand we appear to have countless people insisting schools must shut now

And on the other hand we have people who-

  • think they could still participate in their hobbies
  • think a lock down would be over in a fortnight
  • think they could go on a cheap holiday while the kids are off

How many people genuinely understand locking down now will be for months and you won’t be classed as ‘exceptional’ or ‘special’ - you’ll be expected to actually stay inside for the duration otherwise it achieves nothing.

Friday nights have always been a bit 'interesting' on MN.
I think I liked it better when the drunk threads were about fancying Mr Tumble rather than a choose-your-own-apocalyptic-adventure.

C3line · 13/03/2020 23:27

But it is getting Amazon to deliver, others in lockdown have explained that. Why is that hard to understand?Confused

Bearbehind · 13/03/2020 23:27

Yes, and have you seen Italy’s stats?

It not working so far

They have higher case and death rates than China ever had at their peak

OP posts:
FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 23:28

Yawn.

Even in China they could remain in a lock down status, socially distance, mainly stay at home and still go food shopping and go out but not to crowded places.
.
Bear what do you actually know about any lock down?.

MrsMGE · 13/03/2020 23:28

Re lockdown and not being able to do shopping, that's untrue. My family members in Italy (Milan and surrounding areas, all on lockdown) are allowed to leave the house where necessary. This includes going to the shops to buy food and medicines. Social distancing measures are in place to ensure there aren't too many people in one place too close to each other.

Lockdown doesn't mean you're not allowed to do anything at all and can't leave the house (unless you're ill, of course).

Lockheart · 13/03/2020 23:30

@Bearbehind I've already posted you a link to show it IS working in Italy...

Let's try again: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51852320

"However, Mr Di Maio told the BBC the measures imposed in the first area of the outbreak were proving effective. Two weeks after the first 10 towns in northern Italy were declared a "red zone" and put under lockdown, he said they had no new infections. This then served as a model to tighten measures across the country. "

Bearbehind · 13/03/2020 23:30

But it is getting Amazon to deliver, others in lockdown have explained that. Why is that hard to understand?

Why is it hard to understand that getting Amazon employees to deliver to people in lockdown is not a priority?

Front line healthcare is a priority yes, but fucking craft supplies, no.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 13/03/2020 23:31

@Bearbehind with the opening post I thought you sounded very arrogant and superior. But reading your further comments to those actually going through “lockdown” I am actually Shock

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 23:32

Bumbling there you go and pretty much the same for friend in China!

People don't understand, workers all washing cups with the same old manky sponge, touching the office kettle handle, using different computers, crushed in a lunch queue, talking in close quarters!

Is not the same as being outside away from other people at several fleet!!

AppropriateAdult · 13/03/2020 23:32

Yes, and have you seen Italy’s stats?

It not working so far

They have higher case and death rates than China ever had at their peak

It’ll take approximately 12 days for the effects of the lockdown to be reflected in the case rates. It’s too soon yet to see a reduction. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t the right decision.

C3line · 13/03/2020 23:32

Um Amazon delivers a zillion things. Shoving paper in an order of antibac is of no consequence.

Bearbehind · 13/03/2020 23:35

Um Amazon delivers a zillion things. Shoving paper in an order of antibac is of no consequence.

For crying out loud

It’s the fact you expect someone to be working and coming into contact with countless others, all to appease your desire for a bit of drawing paper, whilst you’re isolating, that’s the problem

Do you really not see that?

OP posts:
AuldAlliance · 13/03/2020 23:37

OK, so now we've moved from
"no one apart from me knows what lockdown actually means, including those currently experiencing it"
to
"only my definition of lockdown would kill CV [sure, lots of people would starve to death, but they wouldn't die of CV]."

"Vocab problem" was a euphemism.
"Are you drunk?" is less abstruse.

Lockheart · 13/03/2020 23:37

@Bearbehind how many times do I have to point out that Amazon (and other delivery services such as Just Eat) are now doing CONTACTLESS deliveries.

They are not coming into contact with "countless others" to deliver things.

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 23:37

Bear everything is black and white for you like sir paddy.
It's all or nothing. Other counties are flexible. Other countries in lock down are sensible. It's about not being in close quarters to transmit

C3line · 13/03/2020 23:39

Have you not read your own thread. It’s not expectation. They are delivering during lockdown. Are you being deliberately obtuse? And as for patronising and lecturing the mother of a 4 year old already on week 3 of lock down, words fail me.Shock

Chloemol · 13/03/2020 23:40

ITs not simple to lockdown. Do we stop those working for utility companies to go to work? Or no gas or elec etc. We would expect drs and pharmacists to go to work. Those working in food shops would have to go to work. Do we stop the emergency services from going to work? So that’s all police, fire and Ambos plus coastguard. Then there’s the armed services, who would be required to make sure idiots, like many on here who think self isolation allows them to walk dogs, go running etc, comply. Plus of course watch our borders. Then there are the border forces who will still be required in case people use this to get into the country ( and as CV is world wide it’s not going to stop them), and probably loads of others who are needed to stay at work, so millions still working, still susceptible to catch the virus and pass it onto loved ones at home, or are you saying the6 should all stay elsewhere. And to make it work it would have to happen for months, not weeks.

Do you really think it’s possible to truly lockdown without everything collapsing

BreconBeBuggered · 13/03/2020 23:41

All right, OP.
How do you think it should go down? I already don't get out to do much in the way of shopping, other than supermarkets and pharmacies, so you can hit me with whatever. Will supermarkets be allowed to stock frivolous items under your regime?
I'm guilty of walking the dog in the countryside, but I live on the edge of a very small town and a short drive takes me to nobody within a couple of miles land. Would I be allowed to continue exercising my dog in this way, or will this be translated into me putting my dog's interests before those of people I won't actually encounter?
I can't see how we in the UK have the infrastructure to prevent this happening, even if you don't approve.

MrSkinnyLegsSpider · 13/03/2020 23:44

Also OP, will you be paying the wages to the aforementioned Italian delivery driver who told a PP how grateful they were to still have a job? Otherwise you are "expecting" them to lose their living

bumblingbovine49 · 13/03/2020 23:45

Lockdown is not a word that is useful. It is more that different levels of social distancing are being implemented . When you get to the point though that lathe numbers if people are effectively at home for 80-90% of the time, then it has stated to be called a lockdown, which has no real making or definition . Some people on a 'lockdown' will need to continue to go out to work. Off the top of my head this includes:
Pharmacists
Vets
Food retail workers
Banking staff
Sanitation worker
Doctors
Nurses
Paramedics
Police
Army
Delivery drivers
Postal workers

And probably loads more I can't think of

This is a list that covers all sorts of workers. It is not middle class quinoa eaters staying at home making poor people take risks . It is just that some jobs are more essential then others so they can't stay home.

Pixxie7 · 13/03/2020 23:48

Memo from Tesco’s today, they will leave shopping on doorstep if self isolating, driver will sign the machine and some items are now rationed.

GrouchoMrx · 13/03/2020 23:49

Bearbehind

You spend all day every day on mumsnet lecturing us on issues of which you have limited understanding and zero expertise. This includes covid19 and the measures used to control it.

compulsiveliar2019 · 13/03/2020 23:50

Op in certain places in the uk amazon do delivery by robots! So no putting a delivery driver at risk!

I have horses. They are around 5 miles away from my home, I'll be dammed if I'm not getting there to check on them every day. Symptomatic or not! I'm not abandoning them. I don't have anyone else to help with them and they are in an isolated field in a very rural area.

AnneOfTeenFables · 13/03/2020 23:51

Does the OP think it will unfairly impact on the working class? That seems unlikely since the essential medical, pharmaceutical, utilities infrastructure sectors, etc, tend to be middle-class professionals.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/03/2020 23:53

My friends mother lives in China. Only people allowed out every day were food shop workers. People were initially allowed out once every 3 days for a quick trip to supermarket with numerous temp checks en route.

After a while even that was banned and food parcel deliveries were made (I assume by Party officials) to the housing blocks. Not sure if this was the same everywhere.

For me personally if a lockdown is ordered then that’s it I’m not leaving the house. We have food. We stay in and watch Netflix, read books. For weeks and weeks and weeks if need be.
