How worried are you, right now?

Until yesterday I was mildly concerned about the virus, but I couldn't sleep last night and have been preoccupied all day. I feel like if I talk to actual people about my concerns for my family and society as a whole, it will make it real. Feels a bit like a dream.

How are you feeling today?

I'm quite worried. Much more so than a week ago. I think my level of anxiety is proportionate. DH is making me anxious by not being worried enough about his parents. DM is on a cruise and someone on there has been taken ill (as was inevitable, I suppose). DD1 and DD2 (older teenagers) and their friends are swanning around going to pubs and clubs, regardless of symptoms, and will almost certainly infect us. Work : I still have to go in and I can't work from home. So yes, I'm worried.

AccountAntsy · 13/03/2020 20:24

I’m unsettled more than worried. And I feel far more unsettled when I’m reading posts on here or twitter than I do when I speak to friends, family and colleagues in real life. They are concerned but not panicking. A lot of people here are panicking, and it’s people’s behaviour and its impact that concerns me almost as much as the actual virus.

NaturalBornWoman · 13/03/2020 20:25

Unless you're over 60 or have a pre-existing condition you're only going to get mildly sick. Getting quite bored of the hysteria about nothing 🤷‍♀️

Don't people who are over 60 or have a pre-existing condition matter then? People like you will contribute to their deaths. Biscuit

Balkinfly · 13/03/2020 20:25

9.5/10

Billyandemily · 13/03/2020 20:26

I'm pregnant and have been trying to keep calm but I cant even be seen by the doctors or midwife for bleeding/infection I've got as I have the cold! I'm worried it will only get worse.

TheMemoryLingers · 13/03/2020 20:27

Just had very stern words with elderly mum, to not much effect.

  • we don't want to sit around at home all day
  • we're making sure we take the shorter bus route
  • I don't want my food delivered because they sometimes send the wrong thing

Oh, OK, then. If getting the right brand of beans is more important to you than staying alive, what the hell can I say?

At least my MIL is taking it seriously and her sheltered flats have put strict measures in.

AccountAntsy · 13/03/2020 20:27

Less worried today than yesterday as I spoke to a friend who runs the ICU in our local hospital and her view was they were well-prepared and she agreed with the government's approach. I figure she knows more than me...

My family who work in the NHS are similarly in agreement with the general approach. One is working in ITU and while he wouldn’t say they’re well-prepared, what he’s reporting bears no relation whatsoever to some of the panicked rumour and hyperbole I read on here.

peeledplumtomatoes · 13/03/2020 20:28

@NaturalBornWoman, they do matter. But there's actually nothing that can be done to protect them other than keep them in total isolation until a vaccine is available.

RhubarbTea · 13/03/2020 20:28

I've been concerned/worried since January. In the past week I've had a few very bad days where I have been totally terrified. This morning was more normal because I was doing normal routine stuff but the rest of today... everything feels strange. Shopping is strange, people are edgy, the streets in my city are deserted. Stuff I love is being cancelled left right and centre.

Even though I knew this would likely happen back in Jan, I didn't truly understand how much it would affect everything and remove my ability to plan ahead for months and months.

So yes I am very scared. Not for me so much, but for those I love, or the idea of dying and therefore leaving my DC without a mum. That horrifies me.

Balkinfly · 13/03/2020 20:28

Why are people so ignorant atm. What part of hospitals being stretched to breaking point Drs being taken from other Specialties leaving a scant overstretched Health Service that anyone may need at any one time!

Ffs get a grip everyone we are going to hurt from this for a long time.

RuggyPeg · 13/03/2020 20:28

Not even a bit worried. Nothing. Nada. I think it's utterly ridiculous and everyone had seriously lost their mind.

Duchessofblandings · 13/03/2020 20:28

Desperately. Immunosuppressed husband in 60s and children (one adult, one not) with asthma. Elderly parents, two healthy, two not, all in 80s. Please everyone, take this seriously and protect others. It is not “just like flu”.

Balkinfly · 13/03/2020 20:31

I get it now you get your kicks from winding people up. Hmm

Moomin8 · 13/03/2020 20:34

I'm not panicking. I'm worried about my dp and my elderly parents., my dp has underlying health issues and we have a 3 month old dd.

I think the government should be doing more and not simply telling people your loved ones are going to die, tough Angry

laughinglettuce · 13/03/2020 20:34

A while ago I stopped watching tv in the morning. It has done me the power of good. I might actually extend it to the news. There's no point worrying about it. If it happens it happens.

DryHeave · 13/03/2020 20:34

Extraordinary briefings are happening in hospitals up and down the country. It’s not like 50% of us will die, but our NHS is likely to become completely overwhelmed. Staff are having annual leave cancelled, anything routine is being cancelled, operating theatres and any suitable rooms are being converted to ITUs. Policies for treating (or not) people at different age brackets are in place. They’re gearing up for this to be BIG in the peak in April/May. And it still won’t be enough.

I’ve told my parents to self isolate, because if they get sick they will be deprioritised because they are 65+.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/03/2020 20:38

Yes very concerned

The impact will last a long time in so many areas of our lives

I’m astounded how many people are so ignorant (and proud to be) about the issues we are all facing and for some far worse than others

TeddyBeans · 13/03/2020 20:43

@NaturalBornWoman my dad is over 60 and has a pre-existing condition but of course, noone over 60 matters 🤨 quit putting words in my mouth. There's no guarantee that those people will get sick enough to die.

I was making the point that the majority of the population has naff all to worry about so have your Biscuit right back ffs

Poetryinaction · 13/03/2020 20:44

Not worried at all.
I am concerned about the economic impact. I would rather people didn't have to suffer loss of life, loved ones, income.
But I am not worried about myself or my immediate family. Not at all. Either we get sick or we don't. I think we will.cope.

fairydustandpixies · 13/03/2020 20:47

I wasn't worried until I went to the cinema this afternoon, bought an Icee drink, started shivering and had the odd cough during the film (due to brain freeze) and was suddenly petrified that I'd be thrown out! I'm absolutely fine and even sang happy birthday a few times when I washed my hands after using the toilet! Out loud!

Oh and I was the only one watching the film and the only one using the loo!! 🤣

The80sweregreat · 13/03/2020 20:48

All I've encountered is the 'oh well' shrug of the shoulders! I'm glad people are worried on here as I feel like I'm the only one that is.
I wasn't like this at the start of the week.
I am a worrier but I feel I'm just waiting for it to get me if that makes any sense! Also concerned for my 98 year old dad in a care home! That adds to the stress.
So many others don't seem to care !
Thank goodness for mumsnet to keep me sane and many on here do know what they are talking about too.
Our NHS can't cope with normal flu let alone this new virus. Yet I'm told not to worry!

NaturalBornWoman · 13/03/2020 20:48

But there's actually nothing that can be done to protect them other than keep them in total isolation until a vaccine is available.

Quite. But spectacularly rude and callous to dismiss their concern as boring hysteria about nothing.

Teddy DFO

TeddyBeans · 13/03/2020 20:51

Sorry, forgot yours was the only opinion that mattered. 🙄🙄

EugenesAxe · 13/03/2020 20:51

I feel a kind of background angst for my parents, but TBH this is the kind of thing I’m not going to worry about much until I actually get it.

Balkinfly · 13/03/2020 20:55

@DryHeave exactly.

This will also be the biggest Economic hit since Wartime Britain.
