How worried are you, right now?

Until yesterday I was mildly concerned about the virus, but I couldn't sleep last night and have been preoccupied all day. I feel like if I talk to actual people about my concerns for my family and society as a whole, it will make it real. Feels a bit like a dream.

How are you feeling today?

I’m another who is more concerned about my job than potentially getting the virus. My dad is at risk so very worried in that respect but for myself, no.

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 17:10

Too true that's really sad.

Supermarkets should put some aside specifically for pensioners.

It wouldn't harm them to do so. The elderly can't get around like younger people from the shop to shop.

JellyfishandShells · 13/03/2020 17:16

My DH and I were talking about this last night. We both feel that we aren’t particularly worried about us either getting the virus or how ill we would be if we contracted it - both in the older age group but healthy - but more concerned about the short and longer term effects on the practicalities of life, the economy and how much is being revealed about group mentality ( whilst remembering that social media is such a distorted viewpoint)

Scruffyoak · 13/03/2020 17:18

About 35% currently but I am worried about my parents.

LovelyBitOfSquirrelJackie · 13/03/2020 17:20

I’m worried about my mother. She is in a vulnerable group (in fact she overlaps a few) and is laissez faire about her health and well-being at the best of times.

Delatron · 13/03/2020 17:26

@TheMemoryLingers It’s so frustrating isn’t it?
My mum seems to think she is fit and young but she’s 69. She hasn’t changed her behaviour at all and is still saying ‘it’s just like flu, we all need to get it and then we’ll be immune’
She also pointed out that there were only 20 people in ICU. Yes Mum like that won’t go up

I think if the government took a harder stance they might start taking it seriously. They are still planning on going abroad in May.

SushiGo · 13/03/2020 17:33

I was very worried earlier in the week but feeling calmer now.

I'm reassured that it doesn't seem like all the schools, events etc will automatically be closed/cancelled although some have of course, because the logistics of everyone being 'in isolation' for weeks and the knock on impact of that feels much more stressful to me than as much as possible everyone carrying on with life but being fastidious about washing hands etc.

I agree that going out and about helps.

Mind also have some good advice on their site for those of us that know we might need to keep our mental health in check.

EsmeeMerlin · 13/03/2020 17:33

That’s the thing, I wish people would realise people would die if we shut everything down as well. They may not necessarily die from Coronavirus but people would go hungry, food banks usage go up in the summer holidays but they are already running low. And how many people will suffer in poverty as well. It’s surely in between a rock and a hard place for the government right now.

Bluewavescrashing · 13/03/2020 18:06

There will be huge mental health implications in this. Small businesses will go under. Children will go hungry. Homelessness will increase. Medical issues not related to CV will go untreated as non essential medical appointments are cancelled.

We have two holidays booked for Easter holidays and May half term. Much looked forward to in the midst of difficult family problems, poor health and unemployment (latter now resolved). I know it's piddly in the grand scheme of things but I'm so pissed off we can't go.

I'm just in a really shitty mood this evening. Cooking a roast which should help but feel like everything is so uncertain. Raaargh

Less worried today than yesterday as I spoke to a friend who runs the ICU in our local hospital and her view was they were well-prepared and she agreed with the government's approach. I figure she knows more than me...

I'm mainly worried about if I have to self isolate as my food budget is tight enough without adding in deliveries. I have some bits in freezer for me and kids but can't afford to buy more till Tuesday.

SparklingLime · 13/03/2020 18:40

For all those worrying about older relatives who aren’t taking it seriously, this from Dr Rachel Clarke, an NHS palliative care consultant, might help:

And she’s now done an article:

CrocodileFondue · 13/03/2020 19:18

Very worried. I'm extremely high risk and my DS and parents are at risk too.

DH just doesn't seem to understand how serious it is. Angry

Bluewavescrashing · 13/03/2020 20:02

Have to admit I've had a panic attack this evening

Too much for me

OP posts:
Dozer · 13/03/2020 20:05

Very, mainly because the NHS is fucked after decades of underinvestment.

Dozer · 13/03/2020 20:05

If your MH is a concern suggest avoiding coverage.

BritWifeinUSA · 13/03/2020 20:07

Far more concerned about losing my job. I work in air travel. Husband and I are more likely to starve to death than die of Coronavirus at this rate.

MigginsMrs · 13/03/2020 20:08

A bit kind of fatalistic really. What can we do about it? My dad has cancer so is vulnerable and I am staying away, on the plus side at least he and my mum are staying home.

Nquartz · 13/03/2020 20:11

I've had a knot in my stomach/butterflies type feeling all day after DD developing symptoms last night.

WFH today with her, she's already upset because she isn't allowed to kiss DH & I & missed school.

It'll be a long week, at least if the schools are shut all of her friends will be off too so they can FaceTime.

I genuinely can't imagine what it's going to be like, it reminds me of all those virus movies that you never think will happen in real life.

Puppywithattitude · 13/03/2020 20:11

Bluewavescrashing's point concerns me 're the small businesses going under.
This could be catastrophic for independent and small family or individual businesses.
Preparation is one thing but panic and potentially media driven hyperbole must be leaving some business owners tearing their hair out.

TeddyBeans · 13/03/2020 20:13

On a scale of 1-10. 1. It's a virus. We get viruses every other day of the year and noone bats an eyelid. Unless you're over 60 or have a pre-existing condition you're only going to get mildly sick. Getting quite bored of the hysteria about nothing 🤷‍♀️

peeledplumtomatoes · 13/03/2020 20:14

I'm not worried for myself or DCs. We're in fairly good health so afaic it's best for us to get covid and develop immunity as it's going to become a seasonal virus like the flu.

Am worried about DH as he has asthma and is immunocompromised.

Worried about the economy, jobs, businesses going under.

Dozer · 13/03/2020 20:14

It’s not panic and hyperbole, it’s a virus with a much higher death rate than flu.

Puppywithattitude · 13/03/2020 20:19

Of course it's panic Hmm

peeledplumtomatoes · 13/03/2020 20:20

@TeddyBeans, agree. I'm going to get flamed but this is evolution in action. Survival of the fittest. If it doesn't kill you, it'll make you stronger.

Puppywithattitude · 13/03/2020 20:22

And what TeddyBeans said.
