Who is keeping their kids home from school from Monday?

I am. I am at real risk if I catch this. I am not locking my kids in the house. But it will mean they see a small number of kids rather than the hundreds they do in school.
And yes I will be keeping them away from clubs or any large gatherings as well.
Anyone else?

I've just had an argument with my mum because I have the symptoms and theres a case 3 minutes away almost next to my dds school (wasn't making a deal of it, just saying how it is and I'm fine etc) ... But she's told me it's all a hoax so I should stop attention seeking. I don't whether to laugh or cry at that!

Cherrysherbet · 13/03/2020 19:24

No. Mine will go until schools close.

SnoozyLou · 13/03/2020 19:27

@EYProvider Thank you.

theflushedzebra · 13/03/2020 19:29

StillDisappointed - fucking hell.

Seriously considering taking my dc out on Monday - things have got really serious just this afternoon.

we are in northamptonshire. i confirmed with the school today because i am still deciding what to do but its reassuring to know. i think they put out official guidance today where it is up to individual parents to rake the children out so all school should follow.*

SnoozyLou · 13/03/2020 19:30

@ArthurMorgan God, if only.

sassbott · 13/03/2020 19:32

Mine will go as long as schools remain open. No one so far has any symptoms in this house. No confirmed cases in the school / pupils / teachers.
None of us have underlying health issues.

And I am still going out/ commuting/ albeit avoiding rush hour etc (that being said apparently central London is like a ghost town).

So I’m not entirely sure what closing schools achieves if the rest of us are still out and about.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 19:34

I fear many have not been reading international news in the last few weeks.

China reported 117 hospital medics dead.

Iran last week reported 8 male hospital doctors died. You can see their pictures on Twitter.

theflushedzebra · 13/03/2020 19:35

I'm planning to self isolate the whole family as much as humanly possible, simply to reduce the risk of us catching it as much as possible.

I think schools will close, and I think when it happens, it will be a sudden announcement. Boris is getting a lot of flack for his stance, and Trump has just (in his incoherent way) announced a state of emergency.

Paddingtonthebear · 13/03/2020 19:37

Where in the country are the schools who are saying closure is imminent?

We are south coast, our local school partnership emailed this today:

“The government has not indicated imminent school closures. However, our schools will consider this a possible scenario in the future. They will therefore continue to ensure that they are prepared with work which pupils can access during any enforced closure period. This is just sensible contingency planning - schools do not expect to close unless Public Health England requires them to do so.

Where a pupil is not self-isolating and does not attend school despite the school operating as usual, the pupil will be marked as absent. The school will not be able to authorise this absence unless there is a clear indication from a medical professional that there is a medical vulnerability. Parents are therefore advised against keeping their children off school ‘as a precaution’.

Absence through self-isolation, as deemed necessary by the parent’s consideration of the government guidance, will be authorised due to exceptional circumstances. All other absences will be considered by the school just as they normally would.

Parents are reminded that self-isolation does not apply to whole families: one family member displaying the symptoms does not require all members of the family to isolate.

In summary, it is ‘business as usual ’as best we can unless and until the government advice changes.”

People are voting with their feet now I think.

Feels like everyone was waiting yesterday for some decisive action from the government, which didn’t happen so they are now taking action themselves.

Football, London and brighton marathons cancelled today. Think school closures are inevitable now.

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 19:40

patch.. I know its strange, that's how a lady at working was talking as if it was solely her dd who would have to suffer.
Dispensations would be made for that whole cohort for goodness sake!!

Strictly1972 · 13/03/2020 19:45

I think boris was trying to stop panic & think they are already planning school closures for next week. I think lockdown will follow shortly after. It’s good that large organisations are taking responsibility too.

Strictly1972 · 13/03/2020 19:46

Btw I’m not saying I agree with his strategy just think that he’s only releasing bits of information at a time.

Smurf123 · 13/03/2020 19:47

I teach in a SEN school, our parents have been told that it is up to them to decide if they wish to take their child out for the duration and that it will not count towards their attendance records.

OrangeSamphire · 13/03/2020 19:49

Mine will be at home from Monday.

My youngest is extremely vulnerable to respiratory illness due to disability. His special school is still open. Was there yesterday, no-one even checked whether I'd washed my hands on arrival and yet there are kids in there on oxygen and with traches, etc.

My eldest has asthma, and is at a large mainstream primary. Yr6.

I've home educated her in the past (she's autistic, struggles with school but is academically gifted). With this experience I know how we will put together a routine and maintain good quality education for her.

DS is trickier. We simply can't replicate the education he gets at school because we don't have the tech nor the facilities. But we will do our best.

We live on the beach so we can get some fresh air each day.

DH and I both work from home so we will put together a timetable that means we can share the load while also managing work obligations.

Since we can keep everyone home, it just makes sense that we should.

Smurf123 · 13/03/2020 19:49

My brother is being kept off school as off today - mum has cancer, myself, mum and other brother all have asthma.
My son is only a toddler who goes to my mum's while I work but they have stopped going to soft play and mums and tots groups etc
Currently continuing with forest school but it's limited to only 6 children max and they are in a big forest area so limited close contact with each other.

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 20:04

Blossom.

Your so so lucky. There is no consistency.

Paddington. Keep that email. I have a horrid feeling it along with other communications will go down in history as cannon fodder communications.

Like generals sending us over the top.

I'm watching trump now. And I think his speech is more comforting than what we had to endure. Even though we know of some massive failings.

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 20:07

Strictly not true.
He hasn't told us anything and I feel sick with the worry and totally trapped.

He's totally ruled it out.

With the most ridiculous reasons.

Dramalamaindeed · 13/03/2020 20:11

I will be but I’m in Scotland and there are no fines.

Snowflakes1122 · 13/03/2020 20:14

Many schools in my area are half full. Lots are staying away.
I kept my asthmatic little boy off. Also has an autoimmune condition. I’m seriously considering keeping my other two off from Monday. We can’t afford to take risks with my sons health issues.

chocciechocface · 13/03/2020 20:55

We are, to protect DH. I've notified the headteacher today, explained our situation. She is supporting the decision and helping me formally apply for flexible schooling so it isn't unauthorised. The kids teachers are on board and I've already been giving pointers of what to do with them on a Monday. I love our school.

Mumof2bears · 13/03/2020 21:10

Thank you for such a comprehensive list @GrainOfSalt. I have shared it with FB parent friends!

Fine or death? Hmm!! I know what I'd prefer.
